Written by ShaeYesterday we all received some terrible news. The great Leonard Nimoy passed away from COPD at the age of 83. Many of us fell head over heels for Nimoy when he took the role of Spock on Star Trek. From there it was a whirl wind of a career in acting, directing, and so much more. Nimoy has meant so much to all of us nerds and geeks, making this news hard to handle. He was an idol and a Sci-Fi icon that will forever live on; immortalized in his work and our hearts. The Internet was filled with stories of meeting the actor and the memories he has instilled in so many. As I read my Facebook feed on this tragic day, I was touched to see that nearly everyone I knew was affected by his passing. My heart goes out to his friends, family, and all the fans. We here at Girls of Geek send our deepest condolences to his family. Leonard Nimoy meant so much to so many of us. The impact Star Trek has is still felt throughout the geek world. Without Nimoy we wouldn't have the Vulcan salute or the neck pinch...and that would just be weird. As logical as Spock was, Nimoy was energetic, outgoing, kind, and above all, a fan himself. Sadly, I never got the opportunity to meet him. I don't even know what I would have said. I remember watching some of the movies growing up. It wasn't until my adult years that I got a chance to see all of Star Trek. And it wasn't until years later I saw Mission Impossible, the TV series that Nimoy was also a star on. He was a talented actor. Above all, he was a pillar of the nerd community. He will be missed by so many. But in this sad moment, we should all celebrate the life he led and the legacy he left behind. He's want us all to do as he did, Live Long and Prosper.

Written by John Edward BetancourtYou have to love it when a television series leaves you completely satisfied. When you're not stuck worrying about a cliffhanger or wondering if the series will be renewed with plot lines left hanging. Those are the good feelings I've enjoyed seeing Agent Carter come to the end of its first season. It feels like a complete journey, yet, despite all the good feels that come with that, I simply want more. After all, this was a unique television show, one that I found refreshing on so many levels. Some can go on about how it was nothing more than another Marvel offering so of course it's loved. Others can call it an impromptu sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger, but in reality this show transcended so much more than those things and because of that, it deserves a second season as soon as possible. For starters, this is a show that challenged the traditional structure of a television season. It was only slated for eight episodes and because of that, the entire beginning, middle and end were given proper justice. That's simply so rare to find when it comes to TV and well, look at well it paid off. The storytelling was top notch for this show, providing us with an intriguing plot that wrapped up all the loose ends for the finale. Hell, even the "filler" episodes were exciting and compelling. A complete story is a wonderful thing and to find it on prime time with a major network brought me great joy. Not to mention this is a show that featured an incredibly strong female lead, another rarity to say the least. Peggy Carter was intelligent, cunning and never in need of anything but herself. It was so refreshing to see a character who didn't need saving, she simply saved everyone else. We definitely need more of that. But at its heart Agent Carter dealt with one big element, loss. Everyone was suffering or hurting in some form or fashion in this show, and all of them grew and overcame their loss and their pain and that's always the mark of a great story, when you are able to see characters become more. But in the event the show never sees another episode hit the airwaves, we as fans can take pride in seeing something special since this was a bold experiment that accomplished so much. I certainly hope that isn't the case however, there is still so much to see when it comes to Peggy Carter's story, a character that has truly been a massive influence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plus we need to see the birth of S.H.I.E.L.D. and in the end her story is one that deserves to be told in its entirety. Written by John Edward BetancourtTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...It was a bittersweet evening when it comes to Agent Carter. While we were treated to another quality episode that managed to finally bring all of this season's plot points together, this episode also served as what I hope will be the first season finale for the show. So let's get right down to it and break down the wonder of last night's "Valediction". In this episode, the SSR was still reeling from Chief Dooley's untimely death, but were given little time to mourn as they were called in to investigate the wholesale slaughter at the movie theater thanks to Dottie and the good Doctor. While checking the carnage out, Agent Sousa takes a blast of Item 17 to the face and quickly finds himself ready to murder anyone near him before being knocked out. Thankfully he recovers and he and Peggy return to the SSR as Agent Thompson begins to work on what their next move will be to capture Ivchenko, when suddenly Howard Stark appears, ready to help bring the Doctor down. At last we are given the answers to the Battle of Fennel, it turns out Stark stumbled upon the wonder of Item 17, aka Midnight Oil and it was used against the Russians without his consent, leading to the fight between he and the General, and it is also revealed that Leviathan's plot against him is essentially about revenge and that Ivchenko is actually a man named Johann Fennhoff. It leads Howard to use himself as bait, pulling together a press conference where he is exonerated of his crimes, with the SSR keeping close watch as they wait for Fennhoff and Dottie to make their move. They manage to kidnap Howard with a diversion, leaving the good doctor and Howard alone in one of Stark's private airfields. The plan is simple, to hypnotize Howard and have him unleash Midnight Oil over Manhattan during a celebration downtown. Thankfully Peggy and the SSR arrive, subduing the Doctor, wounding Dottie before she escapes, talking Howard out of his hypnosis, and of course saving the day. The episode ends in classy fashion, with Peggy staying away from the SSR after all happy with her accomplishments regardless and she and Angie get put up in one of Stark's penthouse estates as thanks for helping clear his name. Peggy also says goodbye to her love Steve Rodgers at last, dumping the last vial of his blood into the river after Jarvis gives it to her. But not all is well that ends well, for in the final moments of season one, we are treated to one of the best cameos on television I can remember as Fennhoff, now in an impressive getup to prevent him from talking is welcomed to prison by his new cellmate...Doctor Zola. Yes, Toby Jones reprised his role in awesome fashion for a brief moment to talk with Fennhoff about sharing ideas on paper. Either way, this was a satisfying finale to the show. If by chance it doesn't get renewed, and I hope to hell it does, this would serve as a fine series finale. But while we had everything wrapped up in a neat little bow, there is simply so much story to tell when it comes to Peggy Carter. After all, we are no where near the beginning of S.H.I.E.L.D. and quite frankly, television needs a character as strong and awesome as she is. Here's to hoping this isn't the end of her adventures, until next time. Written by ShaeTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...Last week on Gotham, we got a glimpse at the possible background of The Joker. A night at the circus for Jim and Leslie goes from fun to an all out brawl when the circus performers attack each other. What about? Rivaling families within the circus are fighting over the snake dancer. She just happens to be dead. What's really going on around here? This innocent night out turns into a murder investigation. Leslie isn't about to let Jim handle this on his own as she tags along for every bit of it. The murder has everyone in question. Seems the Grayson's and the Lloyd's have been fighting for generations, and the latest fight was over said snake dancer and her abandoned son. This feud is even tearing a young couple apart. Guess we never get to see Richard Grayson since future mommy and daddy can't get along. Or can they? That gets shoved aside when the circus psychic comes forward to give a startling piece of "evidence" for the investigation. He tells Leslie and Jim that the dead woman came to him in a vision and leaves them with a riddle. Gordon brushes it off but Tompkins ponders it over. It isn't until dinner that she figures out the riddle and they head off to the park, near the bridge. They find a hatchet with satanic symbols carved into the handle. But, Jim isn't buying this as the murder weapon. Instead he brings the woman's son and the fortune teller in for some more questioning. Seems the man did lie to cover up the boy murdering the woman. Because he happens to be the boy's father. But why did the boy do it? He hated his mother and her whorish ways...and she was apparently a terrible person. Murder solved? Everyone's happy? Sort of....at least the future parents of our future Robin have gotten back together. And Leslie and Jim seem to be doing fine! Did I mention Barbara is back? She stumbles into the apartment she shared with Jim to find Selina and Ivy just chilling about. The two convince her to dress up and go get Jim back. Barbara stumbles upon Jim and Leslie making out and leaves... Tonight! We get to see the Red Hood! Written by ScottyLet’s just get one thing straight right now, I hate the term B Movie. A movie is a movie and there is no reason why a movie that does not get the publicity of one coming from a major studio has to be given this type of ranking. Now, I love horror movies and since a lot of these do not get released on five hundred screens around the country, they are given this name, but it is far from justified. There are many diamonds hidden in the rough and even using IMDB to find out which are the best is not the way to go about finding the best since not everyone will leave a comment for fear of being ripped to shreds by other bloggers. With all of the movies that are out there, it is hard to come across ones that I want to watch. The title means very little to me most of the time, it does not encompass what the film is really about. But there has to be a good description attached to it, or an unseen trailer that will give me an idea of what I am in for. The online movie services are doing a very good job at that, for me at least since this is the only way I am able to get a feeling of what will be coming up on my television. I have to trust what this one or two sentence break down of what the film is about, since I do not want to ruin my viewing experience with any spoilers. So after I find the movie looks like the most interesting to me, I sit back and hit play. Sometimes I am hit with pure gold and have a great time with the film and a wonderful time writing up the review, while some other times, I have to wonder what I am really watching and work to bring forth my biggest takeaways from the film, you could say its redeeming quality. But there are yet the other cases where I cannot stand to see what is on in front of me and get upset that I have wasted two hours of my life watching a total mess. I know it is hard to believe, but I do not review every movie that I watch, but I do try to. In the case of a movie that I did not like, I push it to the side and find something better to watch since I am not one to bad mouth anyone’s work. It is hard work to make a movie and many of them that I watch come from small production houses that do not have the massive budgets to spend on all of the best effects, camera men, sets or props, so I just let them go without any real complaints. For the movies that I really like, or the ones that have some sort of redeeming values in them, I get right to work. Thinking about the biggest takeaway in the movie, I pull from my own feelings and open up my first paragraph. This can be one of the hardest things for me to do since so many horror movies draw upon the fear of being somewhere new during vacations and I hate to become repetitive with my openings. Then I hit on the plots of the movie for a while, but then come to my closing. This is my favorite part of writing the review, because I can give my opinion about the movie what it meant to me. Although this is one of the hardest parts of the review, especially if there is something that I did not like in the movie that is sticking with me, I look to find a way to counteract it, since I am writing about the movie, which means I liked it enough. I don’t like giving too many things away about how the movie ends and that is difficult when my thoughts start flowing, since I hate when spoilers are given, I mean some people just take away the enjoyment of watching a movie with these. I just want to give a little bit more information about what happens in the movie and hopefully lead some people that are looking for something to watch in a good direction to do so. So long story short, there are a lot of good ‘B’ movies out there and several of them are better than the blockbusters you hear all about. Having great casts of knowns, unknowns and some rising stars. I would never tell anyone not to watch these movies since you can find a diamond in the rough that will make you believe that there are so many more options out there than what is advertised in the main stream. In closing, I always like to give one of my sign off lines, so I leave you with both since they are the only way I know how to finish an article and depending on what underrated movie you chose to watch, either one will apply. Stay Scared & Happy Viewing! Written by John Edward BetancourtNew television shows can be their own scary experience for fans when they come to love it, simply because the unknown awaits us when that critical first season comes to an end. Sometimes the experience ends in sadness as a show that we made time for weekly ends up being cancelled, and sometimes, we experience nothing but joy when the network lets us know our favorite characters will be coming back for another year. The latter of that happened last week when after an excruciating wait, TNT announced that The Librarians would be coming back for a second season. I saw the news on Twitter myself, and being a massive fan of this new and exciting show, I had to make sure I calmed down before writing this article or I would have ended up writing "OMG" about seven hundred times over and over again. Yes, I was that excited simply because we will be getting more of this unique television series, and quite frankly I can't wait for the new season to start. We will undoubtedly be moving on to a new and exciting story arc since "And the Loom of Fate" wrapped up so many neat little ends in so many ways, minus a few. We still have more of the mystery of Jenkins to look forward to and what he seems to know about the Library, the Librarians and well...fate as a whole, so I'm sure that will be an important piece to look into, story wise. But more importantly, as we saw at the end of that first season finale, this is a team that finally trusts one another, knows what to expect from each other and well...that's going to make for some fine storytelling. With trust in place, this is a team that can now work seamlessly together, and quite frankly accomplish greater wonders than they already have. Not to mention, I'm sure the show will continue to slowly reveal all the details about these complex characters as it did last season, a little bit at a time, which is something I thoroughly enjoyed since it kept the mystery of each librarian going, giving us just enough to want to know more. I really have to thank TNT for giving this show the chance it deserves with a second season. The first season of any show is all about discovery and figuring out what works and what doesn't. What made The Librarians so unique is that so much worked in that first season that we can expect the folks behind the scenes to stick with that and enhance it, undoubtedly making this upcoming second season, all the more incredible. Either way, the wait is finally over, this awesome new show is coming back, and I know I couldn't be happier. Written by John Edward BetancourtTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...It was a decidedly different kind of episode when it came to Agent Carter last night. This was a story filled with some incredibly ugly and dark twists and turns and of course it set the stage for one hell of a showdown between the SSR and Leviathan, so let's get right down to recapping the powerhouse episode that was "Snafu". When we last left Peggy Carter she was of course in handcuffs preparing to be interrogated by her fellow teammates as she prepared to take the fall for all of her double agent work, and we were instantly treated to some fine acting between Peggy and her cohorts as she fought back at every turn. It was an intense set of scenes that came to an abrupt end when Jarvis arrived with what appeared to be a signed confession from Howard Stark, part of a plea deal to get Peggy off of the hook. Of course it was all a ruse, Jarvis was merely doing his best to get Peggy out of there, but she instead found an honest way to do it when she and Jarvis observe Doctor Ivchenko communicating to someone via morse code. It leads Peggy to tell her former teammates the truth about what she has been doing all along in the hopes of getting them to deal with the doctor and whomever he was speaking to and the SSR only half agrees as Chief Dooley sends a squad across the street. It leads to a confrontation with Dottie, one the SSR agents lose. But Ivchenko has bigger plans than simply having his hench lady take down a few SSR agents. He finally gets to the Chief, influencing him to lock up Peggy and Jarvis and help him steal Item 17 out of the Howard Stark SuperWeapon collection before leaving the Chief wearing a surprise, a malfunctioning vest that was designed to keep people warm on the front lines of war that tends to explode instead. It leads to the death of Chief Dooley, and as the SSR mourns him, we discover just what Item 17 does...it's a gas that turns people into bloodthirsty killers. So, like I said, this was one dark and incredible episode of Agent Carter and I'll be damned if I didn't enjoy every second of it. Not to mention we were finally treated to Peggy giving her co workers the third degree about how they consistently wrote her off and because of their ignorance she was able to pull off her amazing turn as a double agent. But I did not expect the end of Chief Dooley, who went out in heroic fashion, nor did I expect Howard's invention to be that downright crazy. It really has set the stage for a killer finale next week, and I'm dying to know how this series will end. Until then... Written by ShaeTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...Last week on Gotham, we learned some villain origin stories, reimagined, are pretty spectacular. This thrilling conclusion to the Scarecrow's birth fueled some serious fangirling. Not to mention, confirmed my hope that we were getting that storyline. It seems Crane's madness started with his father. The whole thing was a way to cure fear. In order to do that, he needed a highly concentrated dose of the fear and stress causing hormones. Thanks to two murders, professor Crane got what he wanted and started testing it on himself. All because his wife died in a house fire and he was too afraid to try and save her. Once the testing is complete on himself, or as he claimed to be free of fear, he turns to his young son Johnny. Surely that can't end well. It never does. But in the mean time, Gordon and Tompkins are heating up. Seems our steamy new couple are doing just fine. Except that Leslie now works at the GCPD as the new Medical Examiner. Unlike the last guy, she's got no problem with Nygma hanging about. She finds him harmless. Gordon isn't so sure, but he accepts in. Sadly, no word on Harvey and his new girl crush, but hey, they might end up together. He did save her from drowning. At least Penguin is doing well. Falcone gave Penguin Fish Mooney's old club. He revamps the whole thing, making sure it's nice for the reopening. He doesn't have the clientele that Fish had, but who knows. So long as Maroni stops trying to kill him, which he does, for the time being. As long as Falcone is alive, Penguin is all right...and Fish? She's locked up in some Pirate prison. The short time she's there, she manages to become the leader. How is she still alive? That's a good question.... Finally, Harvey and Jim get a lead on Professor Crane. They find the old Crane house where his wife died and storm in. Crane isn't about to give up. He takes a syringe of the chemical crap he's been injecting himself with and over fills it. He and Johnny make a run for it before they're arrested. But, Bullock and Gordon are hot on their tail. Crane injects the entire vial of stuff into his son and is shot by Gordon, killed as he goes to attack our detectives. Johnny doesn't escape unharmed. He's sadly kept in a constant state of fear, hallucinating horrific things. And thus, the Scarecrow is born.... Tonight! What awaits us? Possibly the Joker? Are you like me? Do you hate crowds? If so, going out on Valentine's Day can be a bit of a nightmare. But! That's all right! I'm here to share my geeky ideas and make things better. Mostly I'm here to spew the awesome ideas in my head out on paper and hope for the best. It's the little things after all. Valentine's Day is all about the romance. And sometimes, that can be easier said than done. I am a hardcore romantic to my very soul. I'm also a geek. Normally, I have a billion gifts and places to find them. Today, we're keeping it simple. Nothing says romance like a homemade candlelit dinner with some nerdy flare. Whether you are a nerd or are trying to romance a nerd, the effect won't go unnoticed. Firstly, we will need some candles, and color is very important. Depending on the nerdy theme you're going for, the color will set that mood. Red and blue for Star Wars, or even Star Trek! Or blue for the TARDIS. Either way, candles are always a plus, and let's face it, fire is pretty. However you plan the menu, it is Valentine's Day. You'll need, chocolate, and more chocolate. Did I say chocolate? If you're like me and you have some nerdy ice cube trays laying around, you'll get bored and experiment. Some simple melted chocolate in a Batman ice tray mold, and look at that fancy home made treat! I've yet to try making filled or layered chocolate, but hey! I have some time to experiment....they also can work with candies, for those who don't like chocolate. However, it's not a true romance without some main course options. What says "I love you" more than a zombie feast! Who doesn't love zombies? Ribs of Dale and Bob Leg Burgers always seem like the perfect zombie meal. My to mention, red wine makes a great blood substitute. I just don't recommend actual fish sticks and custard, not together anyway...but, watching the Doctor eat it isn't bad! Dinner, homemade candies, and some spectacular nerdy movie or show is just a perfect setting. Now stow that all away, grab the Nerf Guns and Light Sabers and fight for who does dishes. Hopefully these ideas make your Valentine's Day super special, and if not, well hey, at least you had an awesome and geeky day, and there's nothing wrong with that! Written by John Edward BetancourtTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...It's been an incredible build up when it comes to Agent Carter. We've been dying to know what would happen if and when the SSR discovered Peggy was the mystery woman at the club and of course Leviathan has loomed large over the show. But last night, the build up came to a head in explosive fashion in "A Sin to Err". Turns out that Leviathan is, for all intents and purposes, the Russian version of S.H.I.E.L.D. since they are hellbent on finding only the finest weapons and making sure they have the most terrifying and lethal soldiers known to man. I'm fairly certain this is all going to lead to the creation of S.H.I.E.L.D. but in the here and now, all this new information provided by the SSR's new guest from Russia has piqued Peggy's attention, especially the new line of female assassin that the USSR is clearly developing, specifically that such an agent may be how Leviathan got its hands on Stark technology. In a big surprise, the chief lets her explore this lead and she of course enlists the help of Jarvis. As she begins to look for this mystery woman that likely got close to Howard to steal the technology, Sousa uncovers the truth, visiting our rogue milk delivery man in prison and showing him a picture of Peggy to get a positive ID on Carter. This of course leads to the most impressive action of the night as Peggy quickly puts down any SSR agent on the hunt for her, as she begins to plan her escape to safety. But before she goes, she needs the vial of Steve's blood and returns to The Griffith to retrieve it, which turns out to be a costly move. Despite the fact she is almost successful in her endeavor, she is ill prepared for Dottie, who gives her a dose of her own medicine, with a kiss that only a Black Widow can provide complete with the lipstick Peggy has used to knock others out. It of course leads to her capture, but there are still bigger problems at hand. Dottie is still on the loose, and the ally that the SSR thinks they have in their Russian psychiatrist is supremely loyal to Leviathan. Seriously though, wow, what an episode. This is one that had me on the edge of my seat the entire time as the intrigue and tension built up minute by minute. I'm so happy we finally have our answers as to what the heck Leviathan is all about and I love the fact that in many ways this evil organization is using fear to confuse and bewilder their opponents. The focus on Stark is what they wanted all along, Peggy "betraying" them only sweetens the pot. In reality, this is the setup for the grand finale, a showdown between the SSR and Leviathan that I have a feeling will end in awesome fashion. |
