Written by: ShaeMegacon my Megacon! Okay, that's not true, it's not mine. I've never actually been to Megacon, despite living in Florida for 5 years. But! That's okay! Megacon is held in Orlando, one of the most awesome places on Earth (and not just because of Disney World…but also The Wizarding World of Harry Potter!) and probably one of the most humid… On this weeks episode! Riki, Jessica, Holly and Becky make their way to Megacon while Yaya is busy making an action figure of herself…then she leaves to judge a cosplay competition in Denmark. Yep, Denmark. Chloe, Victoria, and Jesse don't make it this con…but they were in the recap from last weeks episode! Maybe that means this episode is drama free, right? Wrong! There's plenty of drama to be had as Holly and Jessica (best friends, cosplay partners, and business buddies!) compete against each other. Which is just kind of wrong. That's like Mattie and I doing separate cosplays…that aren't even related to each other! Or something equally more scary! But alas, it happened. To top it all off Becky's prop car for her Wreck-It-Ralph cosplay didn't all quite make it to Orlando. Apparently TSA was curious about what was in that massive box going through luggage and thought that replacing all the pieces to the car would be too much effort…so they kept a piece before sticking the rest back in and half-hazzard-ly taping the box back up. You win this round, TSA... Tensions mount between Jessica and Holly as they share a room, but don't compete in the costume contest together. They realize they have an almost debilitating codependent relationship on one another (which is not to say that all best friends are like that…) and that, perhaps, going their separate ways this time around was enough to make them realize just how much competing together and being friends really means to them. Riki, on the other hand, is relatively drama free as she get's her costume work together. She makes her sexy costume debut and remembers to brag about making everything from scratch. Which is enough to win second place. Jessica places third, and as always, some dude we never heard of, or barely saw on the show, takes first! Stoked and elated, both Riki and Jessica talk about how winning was a confidence boost to not just their self esteem, but to their work as professional costumers. Without the endless costume drama of Victoria, or the belittling of other cosplayers from Yaya, tonight's episode was slightly lacking in the nail biting drama that it normally has. But that's okay! All that drama can't be good for the heart! Next week, Yaya will return as a judge! Maybe we'll get a glimpse of Jesse? Will Chloe come back? And whatever happened to Victoria's unfinished Lulu costume!? Some questions may be answered next week…I hope.

Written by: ShaeThis weeks episode brought us to Seattle Washington for Emerald City Comic Con! It also brought a few new faces. Riki, Monika and Chloe join Victoria, Jesse and Yaya on their trek down the yellow brick road. Once again, Yaya has been asked to judge a costume contest, where the winner gets an undisclosed cash prize! New comers Riki, Monika and Chloe each work on their respective costumes for various reasons. Riki want's to display her desire to be a prop designer. Monika want's to take her complying to a more, sexy level (which her mother and Yaya both disagree with). And Chloe want's to compete for the first time as since she has a show on the Nerdist about cosplay. Meanwhile, Victoria works to redeem herself from her last con fail of not showing or finishing her costume for the contest. Jesse is increasingly more frustrated with his lack of winning anything for his costumes. All while Yaya works on a new costume and a quest to keep little Monika from going full 'dark side' with her sexy cosplays. Before the con even starts, there is, you guessed it, drama. Monika's mom makes a call to Yaya about her daughters up coming costume. As it turns out, Monika used to be Yaya's intern! Who knew cosplayer's had interns? Seriously…it's an actual thing. Also, bit hypocritical of Yaya considering a lot of her cosplays' are on the 'sexy side'. Veronica's boyfriend makes her costume, Chloe has to find people to help with her costume prop, Riki meets with her prop/costuming mentor for advise on what to do and Jesse spends the whole time moping about not winning a prize from his last costume contest. But wait! There's MORE drama! Everyone has the chance to meet up in Seattle before the con begins to just 'hang out'. When the topic of conversation comes up about complying and body types. The group sides with the 'if you don't have the body type, don't cosplay' philosophy. While Chloe (my personal favorite) disagrees entirely. The argument ensues, but Chloe sticks her ground (you go girl!). By the end of it, none of the cosplayers featured on the show win in the contest. Despite how utterly awesome some of the costumes were. The lack of winning his second contest in a row has Jesse seriously contemplating his work and purpose. Riki is let down but determined. Monika is outright angry of her costume and performance critiques. Victoria is let down. Chloe, on the other hand, is stoked about her performance. Despite not placing, competing has fueled her excitement. Pushing towards her next cosplay. Go Chloe! My thoughts on the whole thing? Chloe summed it up best by saying "I'm not that kind of cosplayer" when referring to the die hard dedication everyone else had. Cosplay is something fun to do. But this new, cut throat, side, is pretty entertaining to watch. Written by: ShaeA brand new type of show premiered the other night on Syfy. It's called, Heroes of Cosplay. The show follow's a handful of dedicated costumers as they make their way through conventions. The world of cosplay has become it's own unique breed. Carving a place in many of our nerd hearts; cosplay stands as not just a hobby, but a way of life (for some). Showcasing the finer points of the cosplay world, these people work tirelessly to complete stunningly amazing costumes for the costume contest. One of the people on the show, Yaya Han, is a veteran cosplayer who has taken her costuming from contestant to judge. Her work is so good that conventions have personally asked her to judge the costume contests. The other's on the show are competing to have fame and respect to Yaya's level. What's the draw? Not just bargaining rights (because seriously, wow) but money. Cosplay skills are being showcased for not just esthetics but for how well their costumes are made. First place winners can win not just a couple hundred but a thousand and up. Not only does the winner earn bargaining rights and cash, they also get their name out there. Contestants fight for fan approval. This growing phenomenon has dedicated costumers working to up their game. It's not just about how good your costume is, it's about how many fans you have. A few of the cosplayers even model. Something that is not unheard of. Many a dedicated Cosplayer has a fan page, photoshoot pictures. For those lucky few, like Yaya Han, they even get asked for autographs. The purpose of the show is to not just showcase ability, but craftsman ship. Why? Money. Jesse, the only male cosplayer shown to be competing in tonight's episode wants people to not only like his work. He wants them to like it enough to buy from him. Many have gone to the extreme. Becky, for instance, debuted her Merida costume as well as her embodiment of the character. She went out of her way to not just work out to achieve the perfect figure for the latest Disney princess. She also worked tirelessly to perfect her Scottish accent. Tonight's show kicked off the season of this new interesting show. It gives a deeper look into the side of cosplay that is hardly talked about. Unless, you're me. Someone who cosplays just for the fun of it. Who knew there was money to be made doing this? I certainly didn't… Written by: ShaeG.I.S.H.W.H.E.S. is as dauntingly awesome as it sounds. The name alone brings a sense of excitement, or confusion. For Supernatural fans it's something to look forward to. The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen, is a pet project of Supernatural Star, Misha Collins. When he's not busy being Castiel, dabbling into the world of directing; the star can be found interacting with his fans, playing with his kids, and getting on with co-stars. Misha Collins started G.I.S.H.W.H.E.S. in September 20011, enticing fan's with a video of what was to come. His goal was break the Guinness Book of World Records for Worlds Biggest Digital Scavenger Hunt. To do this, a minimum of 500 teams were required. Misha's Minions, however, showed up with an astonishing 621 teams of 10 people. In it's first year, 6,200 people participated, breaking the world record. What does this amazing scavenger hunt include? Unconventional, but practical, uses of Mayonnaise; statues wearing sock monkey hats; Church choirs singing 'Eye of the Tiger'; a joust in the library; and the most notable, Random Act's of Kindness. Now in it's third year, G.I.S.H.W.H.E.S. is already under way. Participants are eagerly awaiting their lists. The prize? This year, the winning team get's an all expenses paid vacation to Canada, where they get to hang out with Misha and his family. There's mentions of a surprise, and a fish stew (which could be tasty if you're into fish!). The prizes change every year just like the lists. Randomness, crazy antics, strange requests, all made by one actor. But wait! How does a team prove they've done the things Misha has dictated? By video and pictures. Sometimes, only a picture is needed, other times, a video. Misha dictates what to do and how to prove it was done. All on a point system (which is added up! Boo math!) Of course, something this amazing is not free. The fee (or donations as they're called) required to join the event changes from year to year. This year, the base donations being requestioned was $19; however there was an option to only pay $10 if applicants were tight on cash and of course options to pay more for those willing to help cover someone else's entries, or just because. Part of the donations go towards the grand prize trips. While the rest goes to Misha's global charity, Random Acts. As no good deed goes unpunished, the event is not just competitive, but offers a chance for a lot of fun, the meeting of new people, and span's over several countries. All while serving a good cause. My thanks go out to you, Misha Collins, you're a genius and it's refreshing to me to see a celebrity using his powers for good. Written by: ShaeThe Merc with the mouth is now the Merc with a Game. That's right, Wade Wilson, Deadpool, has his own video game. While that thought should be utterly terrifying it is utterly amusing. The game was announced earlier last year and many had the opportunity to put the game on hold until it's release earlier this year. Which was exactly what my bestie/roomie did. I, however, bought the game a few weeks after it came out. Because, really, a Deadpool game? Come on! How can a home grown X-men nerd say no to that!? The gameplay is simple. The starting tutorial is fun, entertaining and has all the aspects of a Deadpool comic…only in the form of a totally awesome video game. The voice acting is spot on; illustrating the many voices of the crazed crusader. With simple controls (that albeit take some getting used to after playing countless hours of Assassin's Creed) enable you not only to run, jump, and be awesome. but to switch rapidly between weapons. In the midst of slicing someone with your kitanas and decide to shoot them? Done within a second! Wanna throw a grenade? Okay! Just a tap of a button! Killing a bunch of random henchmen, earning points, upgrading weapons, making lewd but amusing commentary is all a part of the experience. With a few guest appearances by none other, the Wolverine. Sadly, there is a downside to this overwhelming awesomeness of pure epic gloriousness. A solid storyline, good gameplay with options of difficulty (because some of us are terrible at aiming). This game has it all….but sadly, it ends before you're ready for it to. That's right, before you know it the game is over and you have won it. What's to be done? Sit and mope while re-reading old issues of Deadpool? Eat an entire box of cookies? Don't be silly! There's two other difficulty settings to play though….and believe me, beginner is hard enough. |
