There was a time in the world of horror, where television audiences received their dose of spooky from a horrific guide of sorts. Someone that would offer up some quips and some puns and some commentary while hosting a late-night horror show that provided viewers with a delightful horror feature, they’d never seen and well, audiences loved this. Because it helped them process the scares and introduced them to some unique characters. Such as Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark or Svengoolie or some regional hosts, such as Bill ‘Chilly Billy’ Cardille. And in later years, creatures like the Crypt Keeper took over such duties. But shortly after Monstervision left the airwaves, the horror host disappeared, and no one knew why.
But thankfully, the horror host has returned with a vengeance. Since Joe Bob Briggs has returned to this world via The Last Drive In, and the Creep is taking care of such matters in the world of Creepshow, and even Elvira and Svengoolie are receiving newfound attention. Because we crave the horror host and all that provide us with, and that is why today’s announcement is of note. Since earlier AMC Networks let it be known that this year’s month-long Fear Fest celebration will be hosted by Janelle Monáe. Who will undoubtedly do the hosting role the justice it deserves since she is as talented as they come, and a horror fan to boot, and to properly celebrate this news, here are all the details on this announcement, and some programming highlights for Fear Fest, and a trailer, courtesy of AMC Networks. ‘Today, AMC and AMC+ announced award-winning artist, musician and horror enthusiast Janelle Monáe (Glass Onion, Antebellum, Homecoming) as the official host of “FearFest,” the long-running, annual horror and genre programming event featuring over 700 hours of iconic horror films franchises, new series, specials and more, now available across linear and streaming. Monáe will be featured throughout the month-long, monster-sized party in the official “FearFest” trailer and social campaign sharing her love of the genre, favorite thrillers, and showcasing her horror score knowledge and musical prowess. Monáe has also curated a list of her favorite horror films for a special collection on AMC+ available to stream during the month of October. “Janelle Monae’s ‘FearFest’ Faves” includes An American Werewolf in London, Candyman (1992), The Fly, Killer Klowns From Outer Space, Puppet Master, Carrie, Jeepers Creepers and more. Said Monáe, “My passion for spooky season is entrenched in who I am. As a child, my cousins and I would watch our favorite horror films and my nose would bleed while I smiled. There’s something truly thrilling about sharing the chills that send shivers down my spine. That’s why I’m so excited to partner with AMC’s 'FearFest' this year and let you all dive into my world of heart-pounding frights. I hope you enjoy my handpicked collection of thrills, screams, and eerie delights. Gather your friends and get ready, because this ride is about to get terrifying!" “Janelle Monáe is an icon whose fearless creativity and love of the horror genre makes her a dream host for this year’s ‘FearFest,’” said Kim Granito, Chief Marketing Officer for AMC Networks. “AMC’s massive horror audience is going to love having Janelle’s signature style and artistic fingerprints across all touchpoints of this mega-programming event. It is definitely safe to say, that the horror genre is rife with all kinds of incredible stories right now. For not only are we enjoying refreshing and original tales, and grand epics that are blowing our minds away and scaring us deeply, to the point where we are keeping the lights on at night, it is also… offering up some uniquely intimate explorations regarding the human condition. For we have been enjoying stories that are pondering upon the nature of generational trauma, the current state of affairs from an equality standpoint, and these stories are even pondering upon the power of grief and what it can do to a person. Giving rise to powerful stories that give us plenty to ponder upon and plenty of real fears for us to face. Since there are skeletons in our closets that our parents helped to put there, we know the world doesn’t see everyone as equal, and we fear grief deeply. For it signifies a major life change, and a true void in our very souls. Not to mention, we fear the cautionary path that so many of stories point out regarding grief. In that, it could destroy us and consume us if we don’t deal with. But what’s fascinating about those particular examinations, is that they only take the darkness so far. They don’t show us who we really become when grief has consumed us, to really hammer home the message, but that is changing, thanks to a pioneering story on Shudder that explores just that. A feat that Oddity accomplishes by taking us beyond the grief. Well, after introducing us to the source of grief. For this story showcases a dark night for a woman named Dani, who is murdered in her new home before finishing its interior and a year after her passing… the void of her absence is felt deeply by her twin sister, Darcy. Who wants nothing more than to bring closure to the murder of her sister and well, she gets her chance. Because Dani’s Widower, Ted, reaches out to her with an artifact that is tied to the man that took Dani’s life. But since Darcy has powers untold, she uses them to garner the real truth about what happened on that night, and now she is compelled to make her way to where Dani died to make those involved pay, for she knows who did it and knows they’re still nearby.
Which is the perfect way to explore who we would become when grief completely takes over our body and our soul, and it turns out… we could potentially become outright monsters. Bitter individuals that have no qualms lashing out at others or causing them harm. Because there comes a point where grief removes emotion, removes logic and replaces it all with pain that the desperate wish to impart upon others. Which makes Darcy a tragic and dangerous character for certain, one that resembles very real-life people. For there are folks that succumb to revenge to have peace over grief or become the lonesome soul she is in this story and that adds an incredible sense of gravity to a tale that also features a great deal of supernatural elements.
Since Darcy is a true medium. One powerful enough to navigate the spirit world and control it to a certain extent, and that brings forth the horror elements in this story. Since we are treated to revelations from beyond that are chilling and unsettling, and moments that are grounded in stunningly simple scares. Where less is more and the dark aids in our fears and that makes for a feature that is as scary as it is intelligent. Because those moments do an amazing job of getting under your skin and leaving you wondering what is about to play out on the screen. Which does allow for amazing surprises that catch you off guard, and it makes the jump scares present in this story, ten times more impactful and terrifying. All of which brings forth, a powerhouse horror feature. One that is scary, bittersweet and deeply human, and it is filled to the brim with moments that chill and terrify and of course… compel one to continue the journey via a fascinating mystery that is as disgusting as the darkness that Darcy carries. Giving rise to that rare horror story that has something for everyone. For its unique plot makes it accessible to the average or casual fan, it’s commentary on grief satisfies those who want depth in their horror and the scares will please all since they are so impactful and so well-executed. Making this an absolute must-see. Because you can never go wrong with a jam-packed horror feature that makes a point to give anyone watching, everything they want… and more. Watch ‘Oddity’

Stories that feature the outright end of the world, tend to focus on one thing, and one thing alone, the end. Because staying in that segment of an apocalypse allows for us to go on a horrifying thrill ride. One where we can see what people become as civilization collapses around humanity and what it would take for modern people to survive it and potentially hunker down to prepare for tomorrow, and that really is it, and we genuinely enjoy this. For it is escapist storytelling at its finest and takes us on a scary and unrelenting ride. But what’s fascinating about going that route, is how much story is left on the table. Because eventually… the chaos ends, the monsters win, and humanity would be forced to think about tomorrow. But few stories in this vein, have taken the time to ponder upon such concepts, but they should. Because that’s an opportunity to deeply explore the human condition like never before and ask some hard questions about our modern world and the trappings of it we do not like. Because it’s safe to say that eventually mankind would come back together in community and make some hard choices. Such as, do we worry about popularity anymore? Politics? Or do we forge a simpler path. Not to mention, what do we need to hold onto? Should we process our emotions differently now that we know what lie ahead? For that matter… is there a place in our new world for faith and the like now that we’ve seen a God ignore us in our time of need? Which are powerful questions that in reality, only one franchise has taken the time to ponder upon. For The Walking Dead Universe has explored such matters in the later seasons of its flagship series and across its many incredible spinoffs. Since the survivors of this apocalypse are indeed putting the world back together again and that is why it should come as no surprise that the new season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol is eager to explore such matters in great detail. For ‘La Gentillesse des Étrangers’ pondered some of those questions, with Daryl’s journey in France taking charge of that question regarding religion. For when we caught up with Daryl in this tale, he was back at the Nest with Laurent and Isabelle after choosing to stick around for a good while and was pondering upon home and those he left behind, and he and Laurent were growing closer and closer as a surrogate father and son. For Daryl was working to teach him how to live in the land of the dead, and that was… a problem. Because Losang had a great deal of concerns about Daryl’s violent ways. For he truly believed that the new world that lie ahead, needed to be violence free, and that its Messiah should only know love and nothing more. Which brought about conflict since Daryl understood that this new world, might not have room for faith in this manner and such beliefs. For hungry walking corpses take precedent over prayer time. But Losang heard little of Daryl’s thoughts and was eager to let him help with a rescue mission involving Fallou. Since it got Daryl away from the Nest and of course… let him do what he does best. Since he did save lives and bring people home, despite failing to end this for all time. But what mattered more here, was that the story explored that yes, some would believe that religion would be a necessity. Since clearly, the next generation of religion is here, and it is as aggressive as the old and it will be interesting to see the show explore its role in a world where faith faltered, because its basic tenants were turned upside down.
However, while that made for a lovely exploration regarding faith in such a situation and set the stage for all kinds of juicy storytelling… we would be remiss to not point out that episode featured the official return to Carol Peletier to the TWD Universe and at first… it seemed as though her journey would not have a ton of depth. For the beginning of her story picked up shortly after the season one finale, wherein she took Daryl’s bike back to the troubling place he found in season one. Where they betrayed him and sent him to France. All because she was hell bent on finding her best friend. But any information she received was a waste of time and led her to nothing but sorrow and an understanding that being alone on this journey was awakening something in her very soul.
What exactly, she had no clue of, but being able to spot a plane and follow it to the compound it was stored at, began an exploration regarding something we don’t see explored all that often in horror, especially zombie themed fiction… the power of grief. A move that spoke to how, we would not be able to alter how we process emotion but would instead have to deal with them at some point. But at first, it seemed as though some old TWD plot concepts were about to come to life instead. For she was treated with kindness by the man who lived at the complex, named Ash. Who while kind, was clearly hiding some kind of secret. For his greenhouse was kept under supreme lock and key, and the glass was purposefully not cleaned to keep it all a secret. Which gave off those ‘hidden evil/sense of doom’ vibes we endured at Terminus or in learning of the Wolves and the Saviors. But Carol’s curiosity exposed that Ash, was dealing with grief. For this place was nothing more than a memorial for his fallen son and that… informed Carol that she has some grief of her own to deal with. Because we learned here that she has not gotten over the heavy losses she’s suffered in this story, especially when it comes to her daughter, Sophia. Who showed up in her mind often here. And that she is convinced at this point, the only way she can heal that grief, is by saving the one person that she consideres to be family. So, in true Carol fashion, she sold a whopper of a lie and told Ash that her daughter was alive and well in France and that she would give anything to go there and find her. A move that pulled at Ash’s own unresolved grief and resulted… in a trip toward Europe, to bring best friends together again under the guise of a lie. All of which set the stage for an epic season to come, one that is clearly going to be grounded in very different and intimate concepts and explore things that zombie fiction rarely does, and that’s just fine. Because questioning the role of religion in the modern world and dealing with grief are timely topics for a world that is looking toward tomorrow and is still trying to reconcile a costly pandemic and a shift in people’s attitudes politically, and that makes this, a brilliant premiere. One that was unique and refreshing and once again takes this franchise in a bold new direction. But above all, let’s be honest, it’s the return of Carol that we are all excited about here. For Melissa McBride has not missed a beat in playing the character, and she’s adding new depth and power to her, and all of these elements have us excited for the reunion we all desperately want, and to see where these powerful plot threads will take us as season two of this dynamic series continues along. Until next time. To learn more about season two, visit our interview with cast members: Anne Charrier (Genet), Romain Levi (Codron), Eriq Ebouaney (Fallou) and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi (Laurent). It is definitely safe to say, that throwbacks and homages to the 1980s and 1980s horror are all the rage right now and rightfully so. Because the 80s were rad, and they had an incredible look and incredible feel that so many are working to bring back to life, and 80s horror… well it was simply amazing. For it paved the way for modern horror and gave life to incredible icons that we still love and adore some 40-plus years after the 80s came to their close. If anything, the majesty and wonder of the era and of those classic horror films is top of mind today, because an utterly incredible story in that style is coming to Peacock and USA Network and SYFY, soon.

Written by John Edward Betancourt One particular career path that so many people want to take part in, is that of the writer. Simply because it seems to be nothing less than a dream job really. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend their days, sipping on tea and enjoying lovely meals after a wondrous workday, where words magically appear on the page, and day in and day out, one is surrounded by creativity. That is why, so many try their hand at the craft and why so many speak to how badly they want it. That is until they learn… just how hard of a career path this turns out to be. For so many wild and unique reasons. For this is a career path where others are vying for the same gig in some cases, and where there isn’t always work to go round. Not to mention, it is not for everyone, and it is not glamorous in the slightest. Since those wondrous days can sometimes be late nights, wherein a pot of coffee is being consumed to meet a deadline. And even those who are successful at it, have to hustle and grind now and again, and sadly, that means… there are people out there… willing to prey upon writers that are eager to get ahead and carve out that path. Which could prove to be dangerous for the writer in question, if they get that desperate, and well… all of this is top of mind today, because all of those concepts are explored in the next episode of Tales from the Darkside. A feat that ‘Printer’s Devil’ accomplishes by introducing us to a talented writer named Junior Harmon. Who is a working writer and has finished his debut novel and is beyond eager to get it into someone’s hands. Because he believes he is ready to go from writing articles that don’t fulfill, to the next level. But he seemingly cannot break through and is going without meals because of nonpayment and a lack of sustainable work. That prompts him, to answer a radio ad for an agent named Alex Kellaway, who promises incredible success, at a stunning price of course. For Junior will have to commit to an animal sacrifice and write what Alex needs to make his millions, and well… Alex lives up to his promises. For soon Junior’s name is everywhere and he has riches untold. But of course, he still wants to sell that novel, and well, if he wants it to hit shelves, the sacrifice in question will be the costliest one of all… the woman he loves. All of which speaks to a horror that few people ever think about. In that, there happens to be a dark side to writing. Where scribes suffer a la Junior as they struggle to achieve their goals and where some do indeed fall into traps that guys like Alex, lay down. Granted, there’s no animal sacrifice involved, but guys like Alex ask new and struggling writers to sacrifice something else, their hard-earned money. For guys like him in 2024, charge reading fees with a promise that they will advance a career via their notes, when their notes offer no substance and hold no weight in the industry. Or they run vanity printing presses. The kind that publishes a writer’s project for a ridiculous ‘investment’ fee. Making this story a cautionary tale for would be writers. But there is of course, more to this story than its unique perspectives on writing. For it does feature some supremely fascinating horror elements. Such as how Alex finds his writers great success. Since it adds a bleakness to this tale that takes one by surprise. Not to mention, Junior himself lends to the darkest elements of this story. Since he is so desperate to succeed, he commits to taking lives to further his career, to the point where his humanity fades away and he’s willing to commit the ultimate kill for his dream. All of which speaks to the darkness we carry within and how there are some individuals that will do anything and everything to achieve their goals, regardless of who they hurt. Which makes this, a brilliant story. Simply because this explores a bevy of ideas and concepts that few horror stories ever dive into. Because we so rarely see this side of the writer’s journey on the small screen, and we rarely see the shady folks in that chapter of their lives on display. Plus, it really does showcase some genuine evil from people, and even throws shade at the greedy folks in the industry who worry more about dollars over quality. Giving rise to a story that is part satire, part warning, but all horror in the end. Since it really does showcase the ugliness of those who take advantage and how some dreams aren’t worth chasing if they require us to abandon our humanity. Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight. Written by John Edward Betancourt There was a time, where the horror genre steered clear of offering commentary or examination regarding certain… taboo topics. For instance, scary stories rarely explored the power or the spoils of faith and religion. Not to mention they talked little of the power of grief as a direct result of loss, and it makes sense as to why. In part, because the titans of the day had other concerns about the world, they wanted to offer commentary upon. For instance, George Romero had concerns about civil rights in America, and the drive toward consumerism and our loss of faith in the system. Not to mention… one didn’t challenge faith back in the day and the mantra of the hour was that if you lost someone, you didn’t stop to grieve, you pushed ahead. But as time has gone on, the genre has opened up to exploring new topics. In part, because the titans did their job and said all that needed to be said about what caught their eye. So, it is time to tackle new topics such as faith, since attitudes toward it have also changed. Not to mention, we do ponder upon grief now, and horror can absolutely help explore the horrors of such matters and how we potentially avoid them or come back from them and for proof… look no further than season two of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. Which ponders upon such matters in some very creative ways. The kind that we will of course, not spoil here. Because some of those moments are supremely special. But make no mistake about it, season two of the show saw the chance to take two critical characters from the TWD franchise and challenge their faith and point out the fact that the people of this world have lost a lot since the dead began to walk the Earth, and that brings forth, a very unique season of the show. One that truly puts on display how grief is always with us, and how hard it is to let go of, especially when traumatic. Which allows for some moving scenes to come forth here, the kind that give us pause and connect us with old friends like never before, and the same type of exploration comes forth via matters of faith. Since there are moments that remind us of the fact that while faith can be powerful and healthy in nature, it can also be quite toxic and it can drive people to do silly things on both ends of the spectrum, and the show even takes the time to explore how faith can ostracize and isolate. Which gives rise to a fascinating season of storytelling that is intimate, and thoughtful and in TWD fashion… grandiose as well. In fact, this is a downright jaw-dropping season of storytelling. One that features big ideas, big moments and the action and adventure we crave. A move that does Daryl and Carol justice and speaking of those characters… let’s talk about the melted-together, 900 lb. walker in the room. In that, we get more Carol. A character that we truly love and have wanted more of for ages now. Simply because she is so supremely relatable and so incredibly wonderful and powerful, and it is wonderful to see her on screen once more, and to see Melissa McBride reprise the role for the first time since the finale of the flagship series. In fact, Melissa turns in some of her best work here, and truly moves us with her performance, as does the rest of the cast. In fact, Norman Reedus, and the supporting cast put on an acting clinic that provides us with one of the most moving and emotional TWD stories in years. One that truly gives you pause and draws you in, and the good news is that we don’t have to wait all that much longer to enjoy The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. For season two arrives next Sunday, September 29, and we here at NTG cannot wait for you to see this stunning season of storytelling, nor can we wait to share our interviews with cast members: Anne Charrier (Genet) & Romain Levi (Codron), Eriq Ebouaney (Fallou) & Louis Puech Scigliuzzi (Laurent). As we continue to continue to countdown to the return of two beloved characters. Written by John Edward Betancourt

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘Horror’s Greatest’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
When we think of horror stories, we think of well… pure terror. Because the genre has established itself to be a beacon for all things scary, by offering up stories that deeply unsettle and disturb us and tap into our most primal fears. Which makes horror, some serious business. The kind that many believe, shouldn’t offer jokes or lighthearted moments in the slightest, so we can properly bask in the scary moments it provides us with. But alas, that’s the wrong way to think of horror. For it is the most intelligent and versatile genre out there, and because of that, it can accomplish wonders when it dabbles in genre fusion, as evidenced by last night’s episode of Horror’s Greatest on Shudder. For ‘Horror Comedies’ explored how a little humor can help bring about some stunning horror stories, the kind that flat out… can make the genre more accessible to people and help ease them into the true terror it holds. Take Beetlejuice for instance. Since that’s a horror comedy that is spooky, but never overpowering, and funny enough that one never feels threatened. Not to mention, there are horror comedies out there, that can be so fun and so outlandish that one is just treated to an entertaining and campy ride. One that sometimes harbors stunning gore. That also has minimal impact because the fun factor is there. All of which, helps in motivating people to dig into horror further. Not to mention, they can tell some entertaining stories that offer the perfect balance of horror and comedy. Take Evil Dead 2 for instance. Since that particular film is filled to the brim with moments that are outright horrifying and unsettling but are wonderfully counterbalanced by the incredible work of Bruce Campbell and the keen eye of Sam Raimi. Plus, Re-Animator is another movie in that vein (pun intended) since Herbert West’s desire to reanimate the dead in that story is supremely horrific in nature. Complete with putrid zombies that do awful things with their bodies and with the bodies of others. Yet at the same time there are outlandish laugh out loud moments that genuinely break the tension. All of which makes for a rollercoaster ride experience that you feel comfortable with, and of course… you’re outright entertained. But what truly makes these types of horror films so worthwhile, is that they are in fact, a wonderful way to explore our greatest fears. Because like it or not, horror can be overwhelming in that manner, and some of the hardest of horror films keep you up at night, because they can cross lines in some people’s minds and poke their fears a little too hard. But here, you can face the awful nature of death and our fear of it in a manner that is gentle or silly, or both, and gently process it in the back of your mind. Giving rise to a horror experience that is unlike any other, and truly this can help people process some serious fears, because how can one be afraid when laughter and a little mugging for the camera takes place? When discussions come up about the wonder and the majesty of the horror genre, one unfortunate omission takes place. In that, far too often, those discussions focus upon horror from just the United States. Which granted, makes sense. Since some of the most influential and impactful horror stories were brought to life within the borders of the good ol’ US of A. But horror isn’t exclusive to a nation and that sure as hell doesn’t mean that its quality is diminished once you leave US waters and airspace. For international horror can be quite incredible and it does harbor some amazing stories that received a healthy spotlight, in the next episode of Horror’s Greatest. In fact, this episode was laser focused on one specific type of horror, ‘Japanese Horror’. Which truly is a type of horror story that doesn’t receive enough recognition, but Japanese Horror has indeed brought forth some stunning and impactful, and influential stories as well. And it truly is one of horror’s greatest components, for reasons that were broken down here. Such as the fact that Japanese Horror… knows how to create something that is supremely important to the genre, a sense of dread. For a horror story is nothing without that terrifying weight upon our chests and this type of story excels at it, courtesy of its humble budgets. But it is also important because it excels at so much more. After all, Japanese Horror is supremely spiritual in nature, which is something that is rare. Because so much of the world speaks little about spirits and hauntings, as though the thought of speaking of those strange occurrences we sometimes have in the night… would bring forth concern or as Kate Siegel put it in this episode, be seen as crazy. But culturally, it’s a huge part of the Japanese way of life and it is often showcased in these stories. Which gives rise to spooky and eerie stories where spirits haunt and make sure that people are never safe from them. Giving rise to stunning tension in these stories to accompany the dread, and yet, there is still more we should celebrate from this type of horror story. For this is also a type of tale… that holds nothing back. Which cannot be said of American horror, for gore in America is still viewed in a prudish manner. But Japanese Horror wants to know, how far horror can push the envelope and how dark its stories can get. Which has brought forth, just some shocking horror films. The kind that leaves some nauseous with their gore and also forces one to leave the lights on because the scares just went too hard, and that too has made for some iconic and impactful moments from these types of stories. That have haunted both audiences and filmmakers for ages on end, and even inspired remakes in the American market to try and recapture the terror that so many experienced (or will experience) when watching these films. All of which is proof positive that Japanese Horror is indeed within the pantheon of horror’s greatest. Simply because it understands the genre to a tee, knows how to impactfully scare the hell out of us, and of course… will haunt us in the same lingering manner that so many of its fictional spirits haunt their victims. Giving rise to essential viewing for new horror fans and old school ones looking to expand their horizons, and it is wonderful that this show makes a point to showcase what films one should seek out when that moment arrives. And well, now that we’ve reached the end of this incredible exploration, it is onto the next one, one that will ponder on humor’s place within the genre. Until next time. Watch ‘Horror’s Greatest’
