Written by Scott Edwards What would The Stanley Hotel be known for in this day and age if The Shining had based its iconic hotel on a different location? Since Stephen King got the premise for the classic novel here, it would be a shame not to take note and maybe get some ideas about where his story came from. These days however, The Stanley is a year-round hotel, and back in the 70s when King stayed here, it was shut down in November before the snow moved in and the roads became impassable. Is that what sparked the idea behind The Shining? I could see it being a factor to the outline. Being trapped in a secluded area for a long time with no chance of making it back to civilization, seems scary enough. But that does not have anything to do with how the characters react to the hotel, much less being trapped. Let’s take my favorite character, Jack Torrance for instance. Jack is a recovering alcoholic. Okay, that is an easy one since Stephen King was as well. Hurting his son because his kid was being well, a kid, I know that mistakes happen, and this is one that parents fear all of the time, whether they are drinking or not. Jack is trying to get away from his normal life problems and focus on his passion, writing. Sounds like writers all over the place. With how basic Jack Torrance seems to be, he is hiding so much more. He is a family man that will do anything and everything to make sure that his family is safe. With hurting his son Danny years ago by mistake, he is now under the watchful eyes of his wife and it is starting to get under his skin. Although Jack is not willing to admit this, it is still in the back of his mind whenever he does anything with his son. Wanting to make sure that Danny does not encounter the troubles that he has in the past, Jack will do everything in his power to protect his son. Not wanting to give a second thought to his son’s invisible friend, Jack wants Danny to grow into the man he was supposed to be, and nothing less. Now I did say that Jack is a devoted family man, but I have not talked about his relationship with Wendy. In the story it is a little bit rough. Wendy will not let the fact that her husband injured their son in a fit of rage and will not let him forget it. Trying to get away from the city and all of the pressures that it has put on him in the past, Jack feels that the move to The Overlook is the best way to keep them all together. With the massive landscape that property provides, Jack knows that no one will get in his way or his family’s way for the duration of the winter and that will provide for a much more loving surrounding…in his eyes. What about Jack Torrance himself? We have covered the fundamentals of his past, now let’s focus on his present. Why does Jack find this hotel intriguing enough to take the job? It is the job, along with the seclusion that he wants the most. Having to do basic maintenance around the property, along with having to the release the boiler once a day, it is the perfect opportunity to get back to his writing. That is all Jack really wants to do, he wants time to focus on his writing once again and come up with something great. The hotel gives him plenty of inspiration, as he is shown a book housing the great history that went along with the prestigious location. But when he is able to get in the groove of things, he gets interrupted by his family, and although he loves them with all of his heart, he came to work. Family time has to come second as the hotel and his ideas have to come first. What finally made Jack snap would be the question that nobody has an absolute answer to. Was it the job, the responsibility that was put in front of him? Was there something special in the hotel that showed him that there was something better for him? Or was it the self-seclusion that he put on himself that made him go mad? Since I have combined the novel, the movie and the TV series in this review, it is very difficult to come to a hard conclusion. I always lean back to wanting to blame The Overlook for messing with his mind, but not having the gift of the shining, it is hard to back it up. Even though he was hearing his father telling him what to do, could that have been the hotel, or his own mind playing with him. For the sake of coming to a conclusion, I will blame his mental state and let me tell you why. I think Jack is under too much pressure and even though he took a job that would take the strain off of him, he is a little bit like me when it comes to working at any job. Working as hard as possible to make sure the job gets done at a top rate. That is how I work, and I will tell you straight up, it puts a ton of stress on you. But when you are done, you feel great about yourself and do not have to look back wondering if you could have done better. Just my opinion and it is always subject to change. Hope everyone gets a chance to watch and read all of the different editions of The Shining, since it is a masterpiece. Along with getting a chance to come up to The Stanley Hotel and see where the idea stemmed from. Stay Scared.

Written by Scott Edwards Getting into trouble when you are a kid is nothing new. We have all done it, whether it was just stealing a couple bucks from our parent’s sock drawer or getting into a fight with someone at school. It is part of growing up, but for the most part, we grow out of it and try to make sure that our kids do not carry on with our past life sins. A group of teens are slowly arriving at the ‘First Offenders Boot Camp’ run by Sergeant Hoke. Hoke does not have any love for these teens and will do everything to make sure that they understand what will happen to them later in life if they keep up their juvenile ways. Taking them up to the mountains and forcing them to fend for themselves has done well in the past for Hoke, but on this trip, he has a new person along for the ride, Ms. K, who is the kid’s therapist. Ms. K believes that the two adults will get better results from the kids if they use her gift, rather than Hoke’s tough approach. Hoke is none too impressed with the doctor and makes sure that she understands that he is running the show, no matter how much she thinks she has a say. Making it up to the camp site, Hoke tosses out sleeping bags for everyone while he gets to sleep in his cabin, away from the elements. Ms. K holds a little therapy session for the kids around the camp fire to see what is troubling them and finds out there is more to their situations than what has been told to her. Thinking that she is making breakthroughs with the kids, she allows them to go for a day hike further up the mountain, but the teens do not know the history of the area. They are lurking around Paul Bunyan’s old stomping ground and when they find one of Babe’s horns lying on the ground, they take it as a prize, not knowing how protective the supposed gentile giant really is of his friend. Pulling Bunyan from his cave, the group has to find a way to get off of the mountain before he takes his revenge on them all. Without Hoke to help them, Ms. K and the kids have to find a way to communicate with the outside world for some help to defeat the old killer. Axe Giant: The Wrath of Paul Bunyan tells the story behind how Paul Bunyan became an old hermit in the mountains. With all of the locals leaving him alone and a crazy old man trying to be his father figure, Bunyan is content with his surroundings and happy with nobody around. When a group of teens find the resting place of his best friend Babe and desecrate his remains, the evil side of Bunyan comes out and is focused on everyone involved. Without knowing what or who they are up against, they need to find a way to apologize to Bunyan before he takes out his wrath on them. Just a different way to look at the old Paul Bunyan lore from a completely different perspective. Having Bunyan being more of a bad guy than a living legend is what makes this movie a little special. Although the effects leave a little to be desired, it is the silliness of them that keeps you entertained. I have found that different interpretations of classic stories are sometimes the only way to make up your mind about what really happened, and for all we know, Paul Bunyan could have been a giant with an axe that liked to use it on people along with trees. You just never know, but now you can try to formulate your own decision. Stay Scared! Written by John Edward Betancourt THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...Over the course of its first three episodes, A Discovery of Witches has done a phenomenal job of putting together a bold new world filled to the brim with magical wonders and creatures that go bump in the night. But while this is incredible in its own right because this show really has created quite the enriching and fascinating world, there is an inherent danger that lurks in the shadows when a series dedicates this much time to laying its foundation. Because if the show goes too far in such matters it means the audience will be stuck in an eternal quagmire where the series spends more time creating a world over moving a story along and I was curious to see if ‘Episode 4’ was going to fall into that trap, or start pushing the plot forward. Thankfully, it’s clear that the folks behind the scenes shared a similar concern since this particular tale did a fine job of moving the plot along and it accomplished such a feat by injecting panic and chaos into the overall story, with much of that coming from the Congregation. For they met in this tale at the request of Peter Knox, who made wild claims that Matthew had kidnapped Diana and taken her to France and that the Congregation needed to get involved immediately in order to keep the young witch safe and to keep the tenuous peace between the various factions that roam the world, and what made this little twist fascinating is the sheer fact that Matthew’s brother, Baldwin, serves on the Vampires’ delegation and he didn’t buy an ounce of what Peter was selling, and he took the time to gather up some facts, and his research led to quite the stunning moment. Because Baldwin straight up called Peter to the carpet on his lies in front of the rest of the Congregation and this moment of bravery, not only exposed Knox as the weasel he is, it also put the truth about Ashmole 782’s existence and Diana’s ability to conjure it, out into the open, and that meant bad news for our heroine. For the Congregation decided it was time for her to answer before the Elders. Yet, while this group worked to figure out how to best inform her of their request, Diana was doing her to best to try and fit in with Matthew’s family at their posh castle in France, and while it seemed as though such a feat was impossible, she slowly warmed over Matthew’s mother and she finally came to realize that Matthew meant more to her than just a mere protector or curiosity, she was genuinely falling in love with him. But the arrival of Dominico more or less ruined the fairy tale she was currently enjoying. Because it was he that delivered the message that Diana was to stand before the Congregation and he also made it clear to Matthew that their budding relationship would violate Covenant, a rule that forbid any inter-species relationship, and he would pay the ultimate price if he chose to do so and well, the fallout from this was ugly to say the least. Because Matthew immediately shut down any and all emotion he was exhibiting toward Diana out of fear, and he even cast aside the respect he often exhibited for her before heading back to London to deal with this mess and well, that’s where we leave Diana in this tale, abandoned, with her powers growing and an uncertain future ahead of her. If anything, I have to admit that I didn’t expect this episode to pack in this much plot progression over the course of an hour, but here we are, with everything turned upside down. Because clearly every faction is now working toward getting their hands on the Book of Life, with only the demons seemingly handling this matter in the classiest of fashion. But otherwise, there was pure chaos in this tale since Gerbert saw a rattled Congregation as an opportunity for a power play against the Clairmont’s and of course, we’re watching Peter Knox slowly unravel which is terrifying in its own right and at this point, let’s be honest, it’s going to be up to Diana and her powers to save the day. But the clock is ticking, and she has to harness them quickly if there is to be any hope of peace amongst these ancient creatures. Until next time. Written by Scott Edwards When you have a good thing going, why would you ever want to change it up? If you have something that has worked forever, no matter what it is, it would just be foolish to want to mess with it. But no matter what ‘it’ is, everyone is always looking to make it better and while sometimes tinkering with it works, most of the time toying around with it just makes it, and everything else, worse. A gang of thieves are working towards their ultimate payday. Working at a mob run strip club and biding their time to pull their best heist to date, something goes wrong. Randy gets a little too touchy when one of the bouncers at the club is talking about his sister that is on stage, and all hell breaks loose, and the group is forced to kill everyone in the club. Although the score is complete and it will keep them living pretty well, the plan was to take the money only and not leave a trail of dead bodies. Trying to get across the border quickly, Randy ends up taking the wrong road and the gang ends up getting lost. Trying to pinpoint where they are, they encounter a gas station attendant that does not give a damn to their situation and seems to have a plan of his own. When the local law shows up to the gas station however, they group discovers that there is only one law in the small town, and it is not to be taken lightly. When the Sheriff starts to follow the group, he is relentless in his pursuit and that drives the group crazy, but running only makes it worse for them as everyone is going to pay the price for breaking the law. Exit to Hell is the story of a group of robbers that have pulled off the perfect crime, but now Travis, Randy, Jenna and Tasha have to fight to stay alive while being chased by the hardest officer they have ever encountered. As the sheriff is able to pick them off one by one and find a special torture for each of them, there seems to be no way that the group will ever be able to leave the small town of Redstone. Without having a car or any way to contact anyone for help, they have to depend on each other, but when the meet the sheriff, there is no way out. A very dark and gritty film that keeps you on the edge of your seat as you wait to see the group’s fate. Not only are they running from a crazed sheriff that wants to make them pay for their trespasses, they are also trying to avoid being caught by the Russian mobster that they just stole from. No one is willing to give any ground to the group as they are bad people and need to be dealt with. With great performances all around and a great story with a twist at the end that you would never see coming, this movie fails to disappoint. Stay Scared! Written by Scott Edwards Wanting to make every vacation special is something that parents are always wanting to do. Even if it does not start off the best, they are always looking to make it memorable since it is all about the special time they get to have with their kids. Trying to find the bright side of everything, even if there is not one is what makes them special since there is always a way to make even a mistake seem like something wonderful. The Morris family is heading up to the Brown Mountains for a well-deserved camping trip. Wanting to get away from the hustle of real life, this is the perfect trip for them to get out and bond as a family should. Young Riley is up for the trip as well and it would be the perfect time for him to get some good usage out of his new video camera. Keeping track of everything that is happening on the trip, Riley is not able to sleep on their first night out and captures some strange lights outside of his tent. Showing the footage to his parents, he is fascinated by what he has seen and wants to investigate a little bit more, but his father has them on a tight schedule and needs to move on to their next camping spot. As the trip proceeds, the family notices that there seems to be a problem with their GPS unit in the car and it seems as though they are on a road that has no end. Running low on fuel, they are happy to find a tunnel, but not to see what is inside waiting for them. Alien Abduction follows the Morris family as they are on the camping trip of a lifetime in the Brown Mountains. Not giving any credence of the reported alien activity over the past couple of years in the area, the family is looking to just get away. With young Riley videotaping the entire trip, there does not seem to be anything happening with the exception of some strange lights in the sky. When their GPS unit takes them down a different route however, the family is in for something that they never expected. Finding a tunnel filled with empty cars, and strange visitors at the other end, they have to find refuge where ever they can to keep their sanity and their lives. Just another alien movie that makes you wonder what the visitors really want from us as a species. With the entire movie being shot in first person, it is difficult to see what the threat really is, but when they get closer, you start to cringe. With the storyline being based on the survival of the family, it makes you wonder how you would fare if you were put in the same situation. Keep your eyes on the skies and Stay Scared. But a breaking point is not too far off when he is told that there is another contestant for the game that could win all of the money Elliot is working to attain. Not wanting to lose, Elliot has to up his play until he is able to find out who the other player is, and stop him from completing their next task to secure his own payday. A clever and eye opening movie that does not make you feel cheated in any way. Elliot has a great character transformation due to the challenges that are put in front of him. Watching as he slowly grows into something that he does not yet understand, he still makes sure to put his family first in all of his decisions. Playing the game without letting anyone know what he is doing is a clever plot point and makes the movie just that much more enjoyable as he has to disguise his actions by acting crazy. This is a movie that makes you think, just a little bit about how you have lived your life, and if you would be willing to do what it takes to make your fortune. Stay Scared! Written by Scott Edwards There are many times that you are put in a situation that could leave you feeling a bit uncomfortable. Looking back, many of these situations involve your family in one way or another and although you love them, there are sometimes when you just need to say no. It is difficult to say no to family, but if you feel that you are being put into a no-win situation, it is just something that you need to do. Jimmy and his sister Ellie have had a tough road. With their parents dying at an early age, Ellie has had to take over the motherly duties for her little brother and it is starting to take a toll on her. Working her way up the ladder at a television show, she is making a good living for herself and still finding time for her other urges, but Jimmy is not happy with the situation, especially when he has to wait around for anything from his sister. Ellie still tries to put herself first in most situations and an ongoing relationship with her boyfriend Jake seems to keep her emotionally grounded. But Jake seems to be holding back in the relationship and Ellie cannot figure out why that is. Being late in picking up Jimmy from school, Ellie tries to get them home as fast as possible when a large animal hits the car. Distracted and oblivious, Ellie hits another car, driving it off of the street and into an over vegetated ravine. Checking on the heath of the other driver, Jimmy and Ellie try to pry her free of the overturned car, but something dragged the woman away and devoured her in front of the siblings eyes, while injuring them as well. Jimmy will not let the accident go and tries to figure out what it is that he saw and bit him. With all of his research is pointing him in the direction of the occult, Jimmy is sure that it was a werewolf that attacked him and his sister. Although Ellie will not listen to such gibberish, Jimmy finds that they both have the mark of the beast on their hands and will have to find a way to keep themselves safe and out of the public eye before the full moon approaches. Ellie does not notice a change to herself but finds that everyone at her office is starting to take notice in her more than ever, while Jimmy finds out that he has caught the eye of his high school crush and has the power to impress her now. Cursed follows the lives of the brother and sister team of Jimmy and Ellie after they have been attacked by a werewolf. When Jimmy does the research into the occult and finds clues pointing him in the direction that he will be changed by the first full moon, he tries to raise concern with his sister, but she will not listen to such nonsense. When the two start to change however, Ellie has to find a way to control her urges before someone ends up getting hurt. Trying to confide in her boyfriend, Jake, she finds out that the secret he has been keeping from her is much worse than she could imagine as he holds the key to her and Jimmy’s human survival. I can’t say that this is a light hearted movie in many ways with how much killing actually occurs, but I did find myself laughing quite often during it. With werewolves roaming the streets and taking whatever it is that they want, when they want it, I think that this is the finest modern werewolf movie out there. With a great storyline and some of the hottest talent of the day, it is hard not to find a place in your heart for Wes Craven’s dog story. With two different storylines between the brother and sister being utilized to the fullest, it is fun to see how they both handle their new infection while not going too crazy and eating everyone in sight. Stay Scared! Written by Scott EdwardsAre video games the downfall of our society? I would hope not, but there are several people out there that believe that they are too real, and people believe that their lives are in the game. I don’t believe this as I have been playing video games all of my life and when I turned it off, I never thought that it was still on. I will admit however that I have a hard time driving after playing a racing game, but that is easily fixed when I notice my car is nowhere as nice as the one in the game. Douglas Whooly is hooked on a new game this has father has bought for him. Satan’s Little Helper is a game that has your character kill everyone in sight for a certain amount of points and captures the imagination of everyone that plays it, especially little Douglas. With his sister coming back home for Halloween, Douglas is excited beyond belief as he loves going trick-or-treating with her. But not being happy with the man she has brought home with her, Douglas goes for a walk and finds a new friend that might be able to help him with his new problems, Satan. Spotting Satan making up new decorations for the night, Douglas is able to convince him to come back to his house and kill his sister’s new boyfriend. Thinking that his Master is a character from the game, Douglas believes that everything he is seeing is fake and nobody is really being hurt. Satan however is on the hunt and is killing everyone that gets in his way. Knocking the boyfriend out of the equation, Satan takes his place and returns to Douglas’ home and has his sights set on the boy’s sister. Without saying a word, Satan is able to hang low while staying with the Whooly family but does not stop in his killing ways. Being sent out to get some candy for the trick-or-treaters, Douglas is in for the ride of his life with his new master. Doing everything that the game has shown him, Douglas believes that the game is real, and he continues to gather up points as his master runs down people in the parking lot. But Douglas starts to see that Satan may not be the person he is looking to follow as his sights have been placed on Douglas’ family. A disturbing look at how a young boy cannot tell the difference between his video game hero and what is happening right in front of his very eyes. With all of the killing that Douglas witnesses first hand, it is hard to imagine that he cannot tell the difference but being part of his favorite game is all he wants. With plenty of blood and a character that does not say one word, this is a great movie that will keep you guessing who the killer really is, but you will have to wait until the end to see if his mask ever comes off. Stay Scared! Written by Scott Edwards Everyone has heard old stories about where they work, especially if someone has died in their building. Thinking that their building is haunted just makes the day a little bit brighter in a morbid way and if something falls through the cracks, it can be blamed on the ghost. If you are lucky enough to work in one of these buildings and have time to do your research about what has happened in the past, you may enjoy finding out what really happened, but digging too deep may get you in far over your head. The final two employees of the Yankee Pedlar Inn are looking for any evidence of a ghost in the old building. As the Inn is about to be shut down permanently, Claire and Luke are still looking after the occasional guest that comes in but are more focused on proving that the stories that they have been telling to the occupants are true. Trying to find and communicate with the ghost of Madeline O’Malley who died in the building so many years ago, they are determined to prove to themselves that it really happened. Luke has built up a haunted hotel website and has posted several different pictures along with stories that have occurred in the Yankee Pedlar and has been able to get Claire into the hunt as well. Claire may not have believed in ghosts in the past but has an open mind and is willing to use her downtime to do some additional recordings around the building when the sun goes down. Hearing a piano playing with no one sitting at it, Claire has found the most damming evidence to date that there is something happening in the inn, but Luke is still very skeptical about her recordings. Talking with one of her childhood heroes that is staying at the inn, Claire finds out that Leanne Rease-Jones is not only a notable actress, but also a kind of physic that is willing to help her find what she is looking for. Talking with the aging actress, Claire hears that there are three spirits in the inn and that she should not go down to the basement to investigate any further. Claire is still skeptical about the reading that she has received and during the final night of the inn’s existence, she decides to take Luke down to the basement and try one last time to prove that the building is haunted. What they find will change their lives forever. As far as creepy ghost stories go, this is a great one. Not being shot in first person is a huge plus for me and it delivers very well. With two great main characters, seeing one grow, while the other regresses, it is fun to see how the attitudes suddenly change towards the old building, along with each other. Trying to find proof of something that you know is true can be difficult, but when you are able to attain it, you may be asking yourself if it was really worth it. Stay Scared! Written by John Edward Betancourt THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...When it comes to storytelling, there is an inherent danger present when a particular tale offers up too much, too soon. Because if you tip your hand too early, there’s little for the audience to chew upon or stick around for. But there is a counterpoint for that as well, in that, you also don’t want to sit through a story that takes way too long to get to the point because that’s downright silly and boring. Which means that balance is the key to keeping an audience riveted and all of this is on my mind today, because I won’t lie, I was a touch worried that the next episode of A Discovery of Witches was going to continue to reveal all the secrets of this universe, but thankfully, it turns out my fears were unfounded. Because ‘Episode 3’ took the time to truly slow things down and allow for us to properly explore our characters and the world of magic they inhabit. Case in point, the fact that we were able to explore the Congregation’s headquarters, which turned out to be quite the massive facility, one where it seems every creature meets under a banner of uneasy peace since there are vampire and demon representatives present in the building and it is also a place filled to the brim with great knowledge. For we also came to learn that an exhaustive library of files of just about every witch (and I’m certain every creature out there) are archived here and this ‘database’ is so detailed and important that others are interested it, such as our mysterious vampire friends who I now know are named Domenico and Gerbert and they are apparently not fans of Matthew and found his relationship with Diana to be…enlightening. Speaking of Matthew for that matter, we also spent a lot of time learning about his past. In fact, we know now he’s originally from France, which is also apparently a place full of vampires, and that his last name is really de Clermont and he’s 1509 years told since he was born in 500 A.D. and was sired in 537, and that particular revelation, alongside his admission that he’s a fine observer of people and has made according moves from what he’s observed in order to keep a low profile, speak to a great many things about this man. It means he’s thoughtful, considerate and understanding and that’s downright refreshing to see in a series that features vampires since they are oft portrayed as cunning and twisted bloodsuckers who will use every ounce of their power to have what they desire. But Matthew is humble, and a good man and that point was hammered home in this tale by way of his desire to protect Diana at every single turn. Which brings us to Diana, who we also learned a great deal about in this tale. For her journey in this story helped us to truly understand just how big of a heart she has and how progressive she is in her thinking, since she made sure to snap back at anyone who questioned her desire to be near and with Matthew and we also came to learn, that she is one powerful witch. Because Matthew was able to ascertain that her magic tends to work based upon necessity, she needed the book, ergo she conjured it and that also explains how she was able to deal with Peter in the last episode as well, because she needed him out of her head. But I made mention of great power, and that was put on display when Peter (who I might add is by far the creepiest character in this story) outright pissed her off in his latest attempt to get her to call up the book and for his bully-ish efforts, he was rewarded with a blast of Witch’s Wind, a powerful gust of air that hasn’t been conjured up in years, but it’s something Diana was able to make happen with a mere thought. If anything, this episode also put on display the danger that Diana is in right now, since every creature has their eye upon her, her friends have betrayed her and Peter is now pulling out all the stops to get his hands on the book and well, that’s why the decision to run and hide in France makes total sense since the prejudices on display will keep the witches at bay and in the end, I was quite impressed with what this episode had to offer. Because it really immersed us in this incredible world, and showed us so much about what goes behind the scenes when it comes to magic and while this is a lot to process, it left me hungry for more, and I’m also quite curious as to what will come of the subplot involving the Demon who wants to bring his brothers and sisters together. Either way, I need to know more, which means I’ll be stewing over these little plot points for the next week, while I wait for this magnificent series to return. Until next time. |
