There was a time in family entertainment, where the old saying; ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ ruled the day. Because once a production company found a formula that kids enjoyed, and parents were comfortable with it… they just stuck with that formula and well, everyone was happy. Because the kids were entertained, and the parentals felt good about their kids watching something wholesome and worthwhile, and for a very, very long time… that was indeed the standard because why deviate from something that satisfied all?
But somewhere along the line, it became clear, that a great disservice was taking place by sticking to familiar territory and just offering up the same old, same old. In that, there were some family stories that were powerful in nature that were not reaching their potential. For had these stories tried to branch out, do something new, they could have been legendary in nature and that… has allowed for family entertainment to begin to grow in the past decade or so and explore new concepts and really take children and their parents on an enriching ride, and one particular show that is leading the charge in this as of late, is Curses! on Apple TV+. For this particular series just dropped its second season on the network, and it truly is a masterclass on how family entertainment can be so much more. On how it can tell compelling and powerful tales that harbor growth and deep-rooted lessons, and it can explore so much without ever leaving behind what made it great. Which is precisely what season two accomplishes, since the plot remains familiar, with the Vanderhouven family still on their mission to return cursed artifacts to free the family from more trouble, with Alex now at their side. Giving rise to what we love, and that of course leaves us comfortable and feeling safe and that’s when the show drops some wondrous surprises upon us. Because in-between that comfort… are moments that grow this series and move it in a bold new direction. For season two is epic in nature, and even more frightening than season one, thanks to moments that ramp up the scares just a little bit. Not to terrorize mind you, but to just up the ante and really take everyone on an emotional ride. Plus, there’s great depth to be found here as well. Since this is a series that points out correctly, that life doesn’t go back to normal after life changing events. There is an adjustment period, a time to heal, and that’s a wonderful lesson to find here, one that can and will inspire conversations in the home about healing, about trauma and that really does make this quite the special season of storytelling. Of course, it also doesn’t hurt, that horror legend Robert Englund is part of this now as well. Since he plays an important role in season two and is as amazing as ever and he truly compliments the already amazing cast that we’ve grown to care for, and all of these elements, bring forth an amazing season of storytelling and are proof positive… that family entertainment should never stay stagnant. It should challenge itself; it should try new things because this is what you get when you do. A story that is deep, intelligent and ups the ante in so many ways, and it is just wonderful to see this series back on the air and enjoy its eerie vibes once more, and you don’t have to wait a second longer to enjoy its majesty. For season two of Curses! is on Apple TV+ right now, and we here at NTG hope you give it a look and enjoy everything it has to offer. Watch ‘Curses!’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the motion picture, V/H/S/Beyond.
There is a prevailing belief in our world, that popular franchises simply get worse over time, and it makes sense as to why this belief exists. After all, we have seen television shows lose some of their gravitas over time and tell stories that flat out signal that the show has run its course and is indeed out of ideas. Plus, we see this in film as well. Since some franchises do some wild things to keep everything ‘fresh’ in later sequels, such as sending cars and sharks into space, and of course… this is something that is considered to be commonplace in the horror genre as well. For we have seen Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, and Jason Voorhees go from genuinely brutal killers that people feared through and through, to caricatures of themselves or they took part in some supremely weird stories that defied their mythos. If anything, the mantra is that horror cannot sustain certain concepts for much longer than a handful of sequels and yet… this belief is proven wrong by some. For there are some horror franchises that find ways to reinvent themselves and become popular once again, and there are some… that actually get better with age, like a fine wine. In fact, one particular franchise that resembles that description, just released its finest (and seventh) installment in its storied saga to prove once again… that not all franchises suffer from this rule. For V/H/S/Beyond, on Shudder, is nothing short of a horror anthology masterpiece, and its many tales showcase how a franchise can remain fresh and find ways to grow its audience, and this particular feature informs us that one way to make that happen… is to mix things up. For this new entry in the saga, embraces genre fusion by throwing science fiction into the horror mix. All by pondering upon a question, that we have asked for generations on end. In that, are we alone in the universe? And diving into the answer for that, allows for some refreshing alien stories to come to life in this anthology. Such as ‘Stork’ and ‘Live and Let Dive’.
Which provide us with some unique content to say the least, since ‘Stork’ leans heavy into the idea of what would happen if alien life landed on Earth and worked to survive based upon its instincts. Which brings forth an intense story that peppers in a little zombie fun before giving us quite the reveal. Whereas ‘Live and Let Dive’ takes the time to explore what would happen if we ran into other life and it wasn’t friendly. Which perfectly brings forth some wonderful sci-fi and deep dark horror elements and what’s amazing, is that the wonder of this film doesn’t end there. Since it harbors a deeply chilling alien wraparound story, and it even makes sure to provide a little something to the average and hardcore horror fan as well.
Since this movie features a unique, cyberpunk/demon story in ‘Dream Girl’. Which will please the gore hounds out there, while ‘Fur Babies’ will outright please the horror fans that want something wild and terrifying to happen, courtesy of a story that asks… what if Annie Wilkes learned medicine from Doctor Frankenstein and decided to run a doggy day care? But truly, the centerpiece story of this anthology is ‘Stowaway’. Since it features one of the most refreshing and unique alien stories to ever grace our screens. Courtesy of a chilling and intelligent script from horror icon Mike Flanagan, and seamless direction from another horror icon, Kate Siegel, and that story truly chills one to the bone with what takes place and the ideas it brings forth. All of which really does give rise to an amazing anthology film, one that showcases how a franchise like this stays fresh. Because it is willing to dig into new ideas and try new things, and it also brings forth a beautiful blend of fresh voices and established star power. Since we must note that Justin Long helped bring ‘Fur Babies’ to life, and well… all of these elements make this an absolute must-watch. Because it really does have something for every horror fan out there, and it features some genuinely intense and unsettling stories that are unpredictable and original and an outright treat. One that truly embraces originality and lets it be known that franchises can indeed thrive and improve with a little love and a little care for what they stand for. Watch ‘V/H/S/Beyond’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 202 of ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol’. To revisit the Season Two Premiere, clickhere.
When we last settled in to discuss the wondrous AMC series, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol, we talked at length about how the second season of the show was likely going to dive into some supremely unique storytelling. Wherein the show would take the time to explore what could happen if hard religion made a comeback in the world without restrictions and rules surrounding it, alongside a grand exploration of the power of grief and how it doesn’t leave in the apocalypse. Giving rise to real curiosity from the audience, since that’s refreshing territory to enter into, and we all certainly wondered, how those examinations would play out. After all, this is the TWD Universe, and sometimes moments of survival require the story to touch upon bigger moments involving that and it will revisit the deeper stuff later. Which isn’t a bad thing by any means since we always get there, but we do like to know how such matters will play out, and well, the next episode of this magnificent series informed us… that season two is going to try to balance such matters. In that we will get a mix of forward-thinking storytelling, and deep ponderings upon the topics at hand in each episode. For ‘Moulin Rouge’ really did feature both elements. With Carol handling the plot progression and Daryl handling the commentary in this tale, that is… shortly after a celebration took place in this tale. Simply because, Daryl Dixon was a real hero in this story. After all, he rescued Fallou and his friends from the clutches of Genet’s forces. So, all would be well after everyone healed from their wounds. But alas, Laurent’s excitement to see Daryl again, and his eagerness to learn more from him, along with some surprising admissions from Isabelle, in that… she did not one hundred percent believe in the cause as she used to, concerned Losang. To the point where he felt that perhaps the ceremony should be moved up, so that all could understand the wonder of Laurent. Of the Messiah. But alas, before that could happen… tragedy struck. For Laurent went missing, seemingly kidnapped by Genet’s forces and that prompted Daryl, Fallou, and Isabelle to head out to find him, and that… gave rise to the exploration in question. For while on the road, it became clear… that this was a ruse. For Laurent was back at the Nest, studying in a hidden location. All because Losang came to believe that Daryl was a threat to the future of the Nest, to the future of religion in this world and what Laurent stood for. So, he created this scenario to have Daryl killed, and Isabelle and Fallou were to be collateral damage in such matters. Of course, they lived because you can’t mess with that trio, but the damage was done, and the lesson was in hand. That… if religion no longer had a court of public opinion to be concerned about and was free from scrutiny and legal repercussions… it would revert to its more feudal state and do as it pleased. Even going so far as to commit hard murder again a la the crusades, and this was chilling to see play out.
Since it spoke deeply to how… some parts of humanity have not changed in the apocalypse. In fact, one could infer that the fear and the hopelessness generated by the end of everything, could potentially amplify religion and faith and prompt so many to follow maddening ideals to find comfort, and amplify our darkest tendencies out of a belief that survival of the fittest is now the key to humanity’s future. Leaving all of us to wonder if by chance, religion in this manner, and darkness in general, can be overcome at the end of everything or if humanity is about to enter a new dark age without the presence of major governments and major organization. But time will tell in such matters, and it was simply fascinating to see this part of humanity be resurgent in such a violent and closed-minded manner.
However, there was mention that Carol handled the plot progression, and that happened via two key moments in her travels. Such as the fact that she and Ash, were forced to make an emergency landing in Greenland. For the plane sprung a leak in the fuel line and that gave us a chance… to meet some new people believe it or not. For this part of Greenland was occupied by a pair of climate scientists named Hanna and Eun, who had been alone since the world ended and of course… went mad. Since Eun wanted to keep Ash around to breed and wanted Carol dead. Of course, one cannot bring harm to Carol, which Eun learned the hard way. Since Carol was able to convince Hanna to let her live and come with them to France. Which prompted Hanna to put down Eun. But Ash saw to it, just he and his new friend would be heading that way since he did get what he needed to fix the fuel line before things went south, and he put down Hanna out of rightful concerns about her intentions. Which meant… Carol did indeed make it to Paris after all. Wherein she tasked Ash with hiding and having the plane ready to roll, and once that was settled upon… Carol was able to explore the city of the dead in front of her, and she learned that Genet had built something of a sanctuary. One complete with food trucks that were used to build her cause. Since her soldiers and lieutenants were happy to provide food in exchange for pure loyalty to Genet’s twisted vision. Sadly, Carol happened to get caught up in that, which brought her to Genet’s compound, wherein we learned of the fate of another character from season one, Codron. Who as it turned out was captured by Genet and was being tortured so that she could learn the location of the Nest, and while Codron wasn’t talking… the answer was near, since he did have that watch on him. Which was an ominous ending for certain, one that implies that perhaps the Nest will be in real trouble soon, since Daryl has plans to free Laurent and of course… Genet might learn of its location. But while we wait to see what lies ahead in the wake of Losang’s foolish decision, we can celebrate one fascinating tale. One that truly explored a burning question in a fascinating manner, and also explored the world as a whole once again. In fact, one might say that the Greenland venture could serve as a brief answer to another fan question in zombie fiction. Specifically, what would happen to scientists and astronauts who see this from afar? To which the show answered… they would go mad. All of which brought forth a satisfying and engaging tale, one that also built-up excitement for certain. After all, Carol is now in Paris, and that means it is only a matter of time before she and her best friend for life… reunite after all this time. Until next time. There was a time in the world of horror, where television audiences received their dose of spooky from a horrific guide of sorts. Someone that would offer up some quips and some puns and some commentary while hosting a late-night horror show that provided viewers with a delightful horror feature, they’d never seen and well, audiences loved this. Because it helped them process the scares and introduced them to some unique characters. Such as Elvira, the Mistress of the Dark or Svengoolie or some regional hosts, such as Bill ‘Chilly Billy’ Cardille. And in later years, creatures like the Crypt Keeper took over such duties. But shortly after Monstervision left the airwaves, the horror host disappeared, and no one knew why.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the motion picture, ‘Oddity’.
It is definitely safe to say, that the horror genre is rife with all kinds of incredible stories right now. For not only are we enjoying refreshing and original tales, and grand epics that are blowing our minds away and scaring us deeply, to the point where we are keeping the lights on at night, it is also… offering up some uniquely intimate explorations regarding the human condition. For we have been enjoying stories that are pondering upon the nature of generational trauma, the current state of affairs from an equality standpoint, and these stories are even pondering upon the power of grief and what it can do to a person. Giving rise to powerful stories that give us plenty to ponder upon and plenty of real fears for us to face. Since there are skeletons in our closets that our parents helped to put there, we know the world doesn’t see everyone as equal, and we fear grief deeply. For it signifies a major life change, and a true void in our very souls. Not to mention, we fear the cautionary path that so many of stories point out regarding grief. In that, it could destroy us and consume us if we don’t deal with. But what’s fascinating about those particular examinations, is that they only take the darkness so far. They don’t show us who we really become when grief has consumed us, to really hammer home the message, but that is changing, thanks to a pioneering story on Shudder that explores just that. A feat that Oddity accomplishes by taking us beyond the grief. Well, after introducing us to the source of grief. For this story showcases a dark night for a woman named Dani, who is murdered in her new home before finishing its interior and a year after her passing… the void of her absence is felt deeply by her twin sister, Darcy. Who wants nothing more than to bring closure to the murder of her sister and well, she gets her chance. Because Dani’s Widower, Ted, reaches out to her with an artifact that is tied to the man that took Dani’s life. But since Darcy has powers untold, she uses them to garner the real truth about what happened on that night, and now she is compelled to make her way to where Dani died to make those involved pay, for she knows who did it and knows they’re still nearby.
Which is the perfect way to explore who we would become when grief completely takes over our body and our soul, and it turns out… we could potentially become outright monsters. Bitter individuals that have no qualms lashing out at others or causing them harm. Because there comes a point where grief removes emotion, removes logic and replaces it all with pain that the desperate wish to impart upon others. Which makes Darcy a tragic and dangerous character for certain, one that resembles very real-life people. For there are folks that succumb to revenge to have peace over grief or become the lonesome soul she is in this story and that adds an incredible sense of gravity to a tale that also features a great deal of supernatural elements.
Since Darcy is a true medium. One powerful enough to navigate the spirit world and control it to a certain extent, and that brings forth the horror elements in this story. Since we are treated to revelations from beyond that are chilling and unsettling, and moments that are grounded in stunningly simple scares. Where less is more and the dark aids in our fears and that makes for a feature that is as scary as it is intelligent. Because those moments do an amazing job of getting under your skin and leaving you wondering what is about to play out on the screen. Which does allow for amazing surprises that catch you off guard, and it makes the jump scares present in this story, ten times more impactful and terrifying. All of which brings forth, a powerhouse horror feature. One that is scary, bittersweet and deeply human, and it is filled to the brim with moments that chill and terrify and of course… compel one to continue the journey via a fascinating mystery that is as disgusting as the darkness that Darcy carries. Giving rise to that rare horror story that has something for everyone. For its unique plot makes it accessible to the average or casual fan, it’s commentary on grief satisfies those who want depth in their horror and the scares will please all since they are so impactful and so well-executed. Making this an absolute must-see. Because you can never go wrong with a jam-packed horror feature that makes a point to give anyone watching, everything they want… and more. Watch ‘Oddity’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the Season Two Premiere of ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’. To revisit the Season One Finale, click here.
Stories that feature the outright end of the world, tend to focus on one thing, and one thing alone, the end. Because staying in that segment of an apocalypse allows for us to go on a horrifying thrill ride. One where we can see what people become as civilization collapses around humanity and what it would take for modern people to survive it and potentially hunker down to prepare for tomorrow, and that really is it, and we genuinely enjoy this. For it is escapist storytelling at its finest and takes us on a scary and unrelenting ride. But what’s fascinating about going that route, is how much story is left on the table. Because eventually… the chaos ends, the monsters win, and humanity would be forced to think about tomorrow. But few stories in this vein, have taken the time to ponder upon such concepts, but they should. Because that’s an opportunity to deeply explore the human condition like never before and ask some hard questions about our modern world and the trappings of it we do not like. Because it’s safe to say that eventually mankind would come back together in community and make some hard choices. Such as, do we worry about popularity anymore? Politics? Or do we forge a simpler path. Not to mention, what do we need to hold onto? Should we process our emotions differently now that we know what lie ahead? For that matter… is there a place in our new world for faith and the like now that we’ve seen a God ignore us in our time of need? Which are powerful questions that in reality, only one franchise has taken the time to ponder upon. For The Walking Dead Universe has explored such matters in the later seasons of its flagship series and across its many incredible spinoffs. Since the survivors of this apocalypse are indeed putting the world back together again and that is why it should come as no surprise that the new season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol is eager to explore such matters in great detail. For ‘La Gentillesse des Étrangers’ pondered some of those questions, with Daryl’s journey in France taking charge of that question regarding religion. For when we caught up with Daryl in this tale, he was back at the Nest with Laurent and Isabelle after choosing to stick around for a good while and was pondering upon home and those he left behind, and he and Laurent were growing closer and closer as a surrogate father and son. For Daryl was working to teach him how to live in the land of the dead, and that was… a problem. Because Losang had a great deal of concerns about Daryl’s violent ways. For he truly believed that the new world that lie ahead, needed to be violence free, and that its Messiah should only know love and nothing more. Which brought about conflict since Daryl understood that this new world, might not have room for faith in this manner and such beliefs. For hungry walking corpses take precedent over prayer time. But Losang heard little of Daryl’s thoughts and was eager to let him help with a rescue mission involving Fallou. Since it got Daryl away from the Nest and of course… let him do what he does best. Since he did save lives and bring people home, despite failing to end this for all time. But what mattered more here, was that the story explored that yes, some would believe that religion would be a necessity. Since clearly, the next generation of religion is here, and it is as aggressive as the old and it will be interesting to see the show explore its role in a world where faith faltered, because its basic tenants were turned upside down.
However, while that made for a lovely exploration regarding faith in such a situation and set the stage for all kinds of juicy storytelling… we would be remiss to not point out that episode featured the official return to Carol Peletier to the TWD Universe and at first… it seemed as though her journey would not have a ton of depth. For the beginning of her story picked up shortly after the season one finale, wherein she took Daryl’s bike back to the troubling place he found in season one. Where they betrayed him and sent him to France. All because she was hell bent on finding her best friend. But any information she received was a waste of time and led her to nothing but sorrow and an understanding that being alone on this journey was awakening something in her very soul.
What exactly, she had no clue of, but being able to spot a plane and follow it to the compound it was stored at, began an exploration regarding something we don’t see explored all that often in horror, especially zombie themed fiction… the power of grief. A move that spoke to how, we would not be able to alter how we process emotion but would instead have to deal with them at some point. But at first, it seemed as though some old TWD plot concepts were about to come to life instead. For she was treated with kindness by the man who lived at the complex, named Ash. Who while kind, was clearly hiding some kind of secret. For his greenhouse was kept under supreme lock and key, and the glass was purposefully not cleaned to keep it all a secret. Which gave off those ‘hidden evil/sense of doom’ vibes we endured at Terminus or in learning of the Wolves and the Saviors. But Carol’s curiosity exposed that Ash, was dealing with grief. For this place was nothing more than a memorial for his fallen son and that… informed Carol that she has some grief of her own to deal with. Because we learned here that she has not gotten over the heavy losses she’s suffered in this story, especially when it comes to her daughter, Sophia. Who showed up in her mind often here. And that she is convinced at this point, the only way she can heal that grief, is by saving the one person that she consideres to be family. So, in true Carol fashion, she sold a whopper of a lie and told Ash that her daughter was alive and well in France and that she would give anything to go there and find her. A move that pulled at Ash’s own unresolved grief and resulted… in a trip toward Europe, to bring best friends together again under the guise of a lie. All of which set the stage for an epic season to come, one that is clearly going to be grounded in very different and intimate concepts and explore things that zombie fiction rarely does, and that’s just fine. Because questioning the role of religion in the modern world and dealing with grief are timely topics for a world that is looking toward tomorrow and is still trying to reconcile a costly pandemic and a shift in people’s attitudes politically, and that makes this, a brilliant premiere. One that was unique and refreshing and once again takes this franchise in a bold new direction. But above all, let’s be honest, it’s the return of Carol that we are all excited about here. For Melissa McBride has not missed a beat in playing the character, and she’s adding new depth and power to her, and all of these elements have us excited for the reunion we all desperately want, and to see where these powerful plot threads will take us as season two of this dynamic series continues along. Until next time. To learn more about season two, visit our interview with cast members: Anne Charrier (Genet), Romain Levi (Codron), Eriq Ebouaney (Fallou) and Louis Puech Scigliuzzi (Laurent). It is definitely safe to say, that throwbacks and homages to the 1980s and 1980s horror are all the rage right now and rightfully so. Because the 80s were rad, and they had an incredible look and incredible feel that so many are working to bring back to life, and 80s horror… well it was simply amazing. For it paved the way for modern horror and gave life to incredible icons that we still love and adore some 40-plus years after the 80s came to their close. If anything, the majesty and wonder of the era and of those classic horror films is top of mind today, because an utterly incredible story in that style is coming to Peacock and USA Network and SYFY, soon.

Written by John Edward Betancourt One particular career path that so many people want to take part in, is that of the writer. Simply because it seems to be nothing less than a dream job really. After all, who wouldn’t want to spend their days, sipping on tea and enjoying lovely meals after a wondrous workday, where words magically appear on the page, and day in and day out, one is surrounded by creativity. That is why, so many try their hand at the craft and why so many speak to how badly they want it. That is until they learn… just how hard of a career path this turns out to be. For so many wild and unique reasons. For this is a career path where others are vying for the same gig in some cases, and where there isn’t always work to go round. Not to mention, it is not for everyone, and it is not glamorous in the slightest. Since those wondrous days can sometimes be late nights, wherein a pot of coffee is being consumed to meet a deadline. And even those who are successful at it, have to hustle and grind now and again, and sadly, that means… there are people out there… willing to prey upon writers that are eager to get ahead and carve out that path. Which could prove to be dangerous for the writer in question, if they get that desperate, and well… all of this is top of mind today, because all of those concepts are explored in the next episode of Tales from the Darkside. A feat that ‘Printer’s Devil’ accomplishes by introducing us to a talented writer named Junior Harmon. Who is a working writer and has finished his debut novel and is beyond eager to get it into someone’s hands. Because he believes he is ready to go from writing articles that don’t fulfill, to the next level. But he seemingly cannot break through and is going without meals because of nonpayment and a lack of sustainable work. That prompts him, to answer a radio ad for an agent named Alex Kellaway, who promises incredible success, at a stunning price of course. For Junior will have to commit to an animal sacrifice and write what Alex needs to make his millions, and well… Alex lives up to his promises. For soon Junior’s name is everywhere and he has riches untold. But of course, he still wants to sell that novel, and well, if he wants it to hit shelves, the sacrifice in question will be the costliest one of all… the woman he loves. All of which speaks to a horror that few people ever think about. In that, there happens to be a dark side to writing. Where scribes suffer a la Junior as they struggle to achieve their goals and where some do indeed fall into traps that guys like Alex, lay down. Granted, there’s no animal sacrifice involved, but guys like Alex ask new and struggling writers to sacrifice something else, their hard-earned money. For guys like him in 2024, charge reading fees with a promise that they will advance a career via their notes, when their notes offer no substance and hold no weight in the industry. Or they run vanity printing presses. The kind that publishes a writer’s project for a ridiculous ‘investment’ fee. Making this story a cautionary tale for would be writers. But there is of course, more to this story than its unique perspectives on writing. For it does feature some supremely fascinating horror elements. Such as how Alex finds his writers great success. Since it adds a bleakness to this tale that takes one by surprise. Not to mention, Junior himself lends to the darkest elements of this story. Since he is so desperate to succeed, he commits to taking lives to further his career, to the point where his humanity fades away and he’s willing to commit the ultimate kill for his dream. All of which speaks to the darkness we carry within and how there are some individuals that will do anything and everything to achieve their goals, regardless of who they hurt. Which makes this, a brilliant story. Simply because this explores a bevy of ideas and concepts that few horror stories ever dive into. Because we so rarely see this side of the writer’s journey on the small screen, and we rarely see the shady folks in that chapter of their lives on display. Plus, it really does showcase some genuine evil from people, and even throws shade at the greedy folks in the industry who worry more about dollars over quality. Giving rise to a story that is part satire, part warning, but all horror in the end. Since it really does showcase the ugliness of those who take advantage and how some dreams aren’t worth chasing if they require us to abandon our humanity. Until next time, try to enjoy the daylight. Written by John Edward Betancourt There was a time, where the horror genre steered clear of offering commentary or examination regarding certain… taboo topics. For instance, scary stories rarely explored the power or the spoils of faith and religion. Not to mention they talked little of the power of grief as a direct result of loss, and it makes sense as to why. In part, because the titans of the day had other concerns about the world, they wanted to offer commentary upon. For instance, George Romero had concerns about civil rights in America, and the drive toward consumerism and our loss of faith in the system. Not to mention… one didn’t challenge faith back in the day and the mantra of the hour was that if you lost someone, you didn’t stop to grieve, you pushed ahead. But as time has gone on, the genre has opened up to exploring new topics. In part, because the titans did their job and said all that needed to be said about what caught their eye. So, it is time to tackle new topics such as faith, since attitudes toward it have also changed. Not to mention, we do ponder upon grief now, and horror can absolutely help explore the horrors of such matters and how we potentially avoid them or come back from them and for proof… look no further than season two of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. Which ponders upon such matters in some very creative ways. The kind that we will of course, not spoil here. Because some of those moments are supremely special. But make no mistake about it, season two of the show saw the chance to take two critical characters from the TWD franchise and challenge their faith and point out the fact that the people of this world have lost a lot since the dead began to walk the Earth, and that brings forth, a very unique season of the show. One that truly puts on display how grief is always with us, and how hard it is to let go of, especially when traumatic. Which allows for some moving scenes to come forth here, the kind that give us pause and connect us with old friends like never before, and the same type of exploration comes forth via matters of faith. Since there are moments that remind us of the fact that while faith can be powerful and healthy in nature, it can also be quite toxic and it can drive people to do silly things on both ends of the spectrum, and the show even takes the time to explore how faith can ostracize and isolate. Which gives rise to a fascinating season of storytelling that is intimate, and thoughtful and in TWD fashion… grandiose as well. In fact, this is a downright jaw-dropping season of storytelling. One that features big ideas, big moments and the action and adventure we crave. A move that does Daryl and Carol justice and speaking of those characters… let’s talk about the melted-together, 900 lb. walker in the room. In that, we get more Carol. A character that we truly love and have wanted more of for ages now. Simply because she is so supremely relatable and so incredibly wonderful and powerful, and it is wonderful to see her on screen once more, and to see Melissa McBride reprise the role for the first time since the finale of the flagship series. In fact, Melissa turns in some of her best work here, and truly moves us with her performance, as does the rest of the cast. In fact, Norman Reedus, and the supporting cast put on an acting clinic that provides us with one of the most moving and emotional TWD stories in years. One that truly gives you pause and draws you in, and the good news is that we don’t have to wait all that much longer to enjoy The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol. For season two arrives next Sunday, September 29, and we here at NTG cannot wait for you to see this stunning season of storytelling, nor can we wait to share our interviews with cast members: Anne Charrier (Genet) & Romain Levi (Codron), Eriq Ebouaney (Fallou) & Louis Puech Scigliuzzi (Laurent). As we continue to continue to countdown to the return of two beloved characters. Written by John Edward Betancourt
