Nerds That Geek Movie Review: ‘The Violent Kind’

​Being with family might be one of the best times of your life, even if you think it is a waste of time. Although I was not lucky enough to have a little brother to beat up, or little sister to be overly protective of, I still found it great looking after some of my friend’s siblings while they grew up. 

Regardless of what they do, family should always come first. That is what Cody, Q and Elroy believe in as they are part of a biker gang, standing up for each other’s downfalls. Heading up to an old bikers' hang out for their mother's birthday, the three give each other a hard time, but make sure that each one is alright at all times. Cody is his mother’s favorite and will do anything for her and meets up with his ex-girlfriend Michelle at the party. With their recent break up, Michelle brings her new boyfriend to the occasion, if for anything else, to make Cody jealous. 

As the party breaks up, the night just begins. Michelle’s little sister Meagan, who has eyes for Cody is stranded at the old house as her sister left early. Cody, Q and Elroy are spending the night as it was a night of celebration and they all had too much to drink. As Q is telling Cody what the biker gang expects from him, a blood covered Michelle returns to the house, looking for help. But before they can do that a strange interference shuts down their cell phone signals, along with killing the batteries in their cars, so the group starts to hunker down for the night. Needing to find help for Michelle and trying to get back to civilization, the group encounters so much more.

Michelle awakens from her slumber looking for blood as she attacks Elroy. Being possessed, she has no idea what is really happening as she tears the young man to shreds. An ancient evil has been awakened in the old bikers' hang out that no one is able to control. Cody and Q try to protect the girls in the house but are met with a new opposition that could keep anyone from leaving alive. A band, made up of greasers from the fifties takes over the house, and they are led by a man named Vernon who is only looking for one thing… Michelle and what is inside of her.

Being a B movie addict, I fail to see where The Violent Kind falls short. For it features powerful performances, a decent storyline and an unexplained phenomenon and that is more than enough to keep me entertained. The story is more about family and love than anything else, the blood and violence are simply a bonus. As family dynamics are explored in this film, a love story emerges and just to keep you intrigued, there’s a bit of possession, some demon types and some blood flowing across the screen. This is just a fun film with a couple twists that arise as you try to figure out what is really happening.
