It is amazing to see how far haunted house shows have come over the years. As the normal doors shutting on their own and occasional disembodied voice used to be a good way to see that there is a haunting, everything has changed. Using new cameras, especially the one off of the Xbox One that can pinpoint where ghosts are hiding, and the crazy spirit box that allows you to talk to a ghost in real time, it leads many to wonder if there is anything to these new advances, or if they are just a way to make better television. While I do believe that there are ghosts out there, I am a little concerned with the new equipment being used as it appears to be something that can be tampered with, but I know one thing for sure, it does make for some interesting viewing.
Arriving at the Pennhurst Asylum, the crew of Paranormal Investigations knows that they are in for a treat. Exiting the van and working on getting their gear unloaded, Megan is surprised to get a visit from Willard, whom she assumes is the caretaker of the old building. Begging the team to leave before something bad happens to them, the crew makes their way into the old building with hundreds of years of history and are not shocked with what they are starting to document. Having Jesse lead the way into every room in the old asylum, she gives her team the brief history of what would have happened in each particular spot. But the further into the building they go, the more they are starting to feel like there is something roaming the halls around them. Hearing what sounds like children playing in the building, the group rushes to find an empty room, but after the room gives off a blast of supernatural activity, they know that this will be the show that will bring them back to the top. Unloading the rest of their gear and getting back into the building while the sun is still up, they have no ideas what secrets the building is willing to give up. While the group is broken up and setting up around the old building, each member is starting to notice strange things happening around them. From strange apparitions appearing, to an extremely frisky patient needing some loving, each member of the group is forced to see firsthand what the stories have only talked about. But there is someone else hiding out in the building who is looking to leave his mark on the film crew as they quickly find out when members start to go missing. With the old story of Doctor Death roaming the halls back in the day, he is back and willing to bring peace to his new round of patients, but little does he know what the building has in store for himself as well. This turned out a little different than what I expected when the movie started to play and that is a good thing since the story being told to scare friends would have been alright, but living it made it that much better. The banter between the group members was key to making sure that the story could play out properly and they did a good job pulling together and the movie did a good job taking out the characters that nobody cared about, first. Some of the effects were fun and I would have never guessed that an iPad would be good for ghost hunting, but this movie goes to show that you can use next to anything to find ghosts. With a haunted asylum, a strange caretaker, children ghosts, adult ghosts, questionable medical procedures and a doctor that is not willing to believe that the asylum is closed, it is just a good little action-packed horror movie that will make you think twice about entering an asylum, whether you are crazy or not. Stay Scared.
