Nerds That Geek Movie Review: ‘We Are Still Here’

There is nothing wrong with packing up and leaving your old life behind. But just hoping that it doesn’t follow you is counterproductive. So many people think that just a change of scenery is enough to move on, however if you do not change your life altogether, you will just be in a different location with the same problems. When you are trying to run from your past, it is important to remember that you cannot pack it up with you, if that means leaving a couple photo albums behind, so be it. You need to find your own way to forget it and if you don’t, it will always come back to haunt you.

Paul and Anne Sacchetti have found the perfect house to get away from their old life in. After losing their son a year ago, they need to find some sort of way to get by without thinking about him all of the time. While checking out her new house, Anne hears something in the basement and upon investigating, she finds her son’s old baseball glove. Knowing that her son has followed them to the new house, Anne wants to find a way to communicate with him and decides to call her friend May and her husband Jacob to come up for the weekend to conduct a séance.

While Anne is of course, still happy with the house and the thought of her son being there puts her at ease, her blissful state is interrupted when a neighbor comes knocking with a disturbing message. Dave and his wife Maddie enter the old Dagmar house and tell the suffering couple about the terrible past it has had. Knowing that no stories will chase them off, Anne and Paul decide to pass the information on to their friends that have arrived. While they are waiting for May’s children to come to the house as well, the couples go out to eat and share everything that they have found out so far.

Arriving late, Harry and his girlfriend Daniella have a choice to make, go to the restaurant or stay and eat at the house. Choosing to stay at the house, Harry hears strange things happening with the doors. With the noise coming from the basement, Harry goes down to check it out, while it appears that nothing is there, he misses the fact that there is someone standing behind him that takes the young man’s life where he stands. Trying to escape, Daniella also falls victim to the dark forces in the house. With both bodies hidden from the adults, Anne, Paul and their friends have no idea what is happening right below their feet.

When hearing that the Sacchetti couple went out to eat, Dave wants to know exactly what was discussed and why the family has not been killed by the house yet. As long as the spirits are given a sacrifice, they leave the town alone, but when they are not happy, they are capable of wiping the town off of the map. Getting a group together to kill the family in the Dagmar home, Dave and the towns’ people have no idea what they are in for. While the ladies go into town, Jacob is ready to break all of the rules and conduct a séance with Paul before they are interrupted. Being able to connect with someone from the world beyond, Jacob becomes possessed by the former owner of the house, Lassander Dagmar, who has a beef to pick with the people of his former town. When the ladies come home, they see that Jacob has been taken by the dark forces and without a way to stop it, they must ride it out and see what happens. Little do they know that with all that is going on inside of the house, there is a force ready to kill them if they leave.

I was extremely excited to see this movie when it hit theaters. Unfortunately, it never premiered anywhere near me, so thank goodness for streaming services, since I really did enjoy this movie. With all of the different types of horror movies out there, I am still a sucker for a good ghost story, and one that has to deal with revenge is just that much better. I like the storyline and the interactions between the characters are great, especially when Jacob becomes possessed. Even though it does not have a massive build up before the finale, it does not need one since you are told by Dave what has to happen. I have watched this movie several times now and I keep catching things in the shadows, which is where most of the scares come from, so make sure to pay attention to them, as the spirits in the house are looking for blood and when they get it, my goodness, it is just magical.
