Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the motion picture, ‘Fried Barry’. One of the biggest reasons that we are drawn to horror stories, is that they help us to face our greatest fears, by having the monsters that populate the genre, stand in as the allegory for what truly terrifies us to our core. For example, the zombie tends to represent our collective fear of death, whereas the werewolf and the vampire explore different aspects of losing ourselves to others and our inner demons. And of course, possession themed films, tend to serve as a grand exploration of our fears of the unknown, especially in regard to our bodies. Since the ghost or offending force are akin to the surprises our physical health can and will encounter at some point in our lives, the kind that ravage us physically and mentally and force us to cede control. But while those explorations have made for some powerful horror stories over the years, they are in fact... quite broad and often up for interpretation at times. To the point where they might not provide the viewer with the exact insight they need in that moment. But as the years roll on and horror is starting to discover that it is okay to examine more intimate fears and incredibly taboo topics, we are being treated to stories that are narrowing their focus in regard to our fears so they can examine them in great detail. For example, the possession movie is now slowly moving beyond ghosts and demons and otherworldly terrors and is now starting to focus on our fears of mental illness and also how addiction can consume us and bring about a loss of control of our bodies, as evidenced by the brilliant and fascinating new horror film on Shudder, Fried Barry. Now in this particular film, we are transported to Cape Town, wherein we are introduced to a man named Barry who is definitely lost. Because despite having a kid and a wife that loves him, the only thing in life that Barry seems to care about, is drugs. Because the draw and the power of heroin is too much for him to avoid and he spends his days away from home and with a needle in his arm. But one fine day, his desire to escape everyday life through drugs is about to be taken in a wild new direction. For a species of aliens have arrived on Earth to study us in great detail and they’ve decided that Barry is the man that will serve as the vessel for this exploration, and they insert one of their own into his body and turn this hybrid loose upon the world… so they can properly experience, a day in the life of a human being. Which is a plot that sounds more science fiction than horror, but rest assured, the horrors are there. Partly because there are some physiological changes that come about with this possession, to the point where we are treated to an homage from the obscure horror/sci-fi flick Xtro, alongside some love for John Carpenter’s Starman as well. But all of that aside, the real terror that this film explores, is the dark side of the human condition. Since the being that is now in control of Barry is treated often to the horrible things that we are capable of and how we let them persist. Which allows for this story to question why exactly we let bad things continue to happen in this world, when clearly action and attention would solve a great deal of those problems, adding depth to a story that really does do a wonderful job of exploring the power of addiction. Because in essence, the alien in this story serves as the personification of Barry’s addiction to heroin. Since it takes control of his body and makes him nothing more than a mere passenger along for the ride and that is… quite the powerful and accurate way to present addiction in this tale. For addiction as a whole, regardless of the poison of choice, is indeed a form of possession. One that grabs hold of the user and never lets go and makes them a passenger in their own body since their flesh is only focused upon the next fix and the resultant rush from it and the story deserves absolute credit for presenting addiction in this raw and dynamic manner. And for also pointing out that the only way to truly escape it… is to desire a change and to put in the effort to make that happen and to have a solid support network surrounding that person, to help them maintain the strength they will need to escape its grip. But what’s truly amazing about this motion picture, is that it still has more to offer the audience than a powerful examination upon the nature and horror of addiction. For this is also a story that knows exactly when to inject comedy into the right moment to break up the heavier stuff and it also features a stellar performance from Gary Green, who plays Barry. Since he does an incredible job of transforming his character into an awkward alien that doesn’t have a clue what’s happening around it and to top it all off, this movie is also visually exquisite. For it truly paints our world as a visual feast, one filled to the brim with beauty through and through and well, all of these elements make Fried Barry an absolute must-see. Because this is quite the original story when all is said and done, one that really does a wonderful of job of putting a real-world horror and fear on full display. ‘Fried Barry’ is available to stream now, exclusively on Shudder.

Written by Scott Edwards Obsession can be a powerful feeling, especially if you are able to get what it is you want at any time. While some people give in to the feeling, others try to fight it and keep it from impacting their lives. I am not one that gets obsessed with many things, maybe horror movies because I am always looking for a good one that I can watch over and over again, but I don’t let that dictate my days. Being able to walk away from something that you have always wanted is something that many people would not do, but there are some strong souls out there that know when to say when. Wanting to take his ghost hunting show, Unspecters, to the next level, Jake is willing to do next to anything. Getting a call from a network exec with the promise of a time slot if he can deliver something that the other shows cannot, Jake is forced to jump on the next idea. A trip to Farhope Tower with his team would guarantee that the show gets made, but Jake and his oldest friend Andre have a history at the old building. Investigating it when they were kids, Andre knows what power the building holds and warns Jake against it, but there is no stopping his friend when the lives of his team depend on them getting their own show. Arriving at the building, the group sets up their first shot outside, explaining what madness went on there in the eighties. With twenty-two suicides that took place in the tower in only a number of months, the building was shut down and eventually locked up from any prying eyes. With his team of investigators, Jake takes his new recruit Zoe, camera woman Judy, investigator Simon and old friend Andre in for the ride of their lives. Exploring the main floor of the building, it is apparent that the locks did not keep anyone from coming inside and finding graffiti all over the place, one room holds a special message, ‘Go Up’. Knowing the history of the building and where the suicides took place, the group decides to follow that advice and head up using a staircase that does not exist on the blueprints. Arriving on the tenth floor, the group goes about their business as usual, but hear a crash in the distance. Thinking that there was a sound that preceded it, they check the tape and Jake hears humming in the headphones and decides to continue the hunt. As they try to track the events happening around them, the group splits up when two crashes take place on opposite sides of the floor. As Jake and Simon head one way and find a suicide note from one of the previous tenants, Zoe, Judy and Andre find a spirit that is willing to communicate with them. As the ghostly screaming comes to an end and Jake awakes from being hit in the head, the group finds that Simon has gone missing. Knowing that the building is ready to take more, Andre begs the group to leave, but Jake will not allow one member of the team to be left behind, besides, the stairwells only go up since the woman of the building has something special to show them. I didn’t know about this movie as I have seen several ghost hunter movies over my time, and they usually leave me wanting more. This was not one of those movies, it was very entertaining. Seeing that it was not going to be a found footage movie helped keep my attention from the get-go, and I was impressed by the fact that the flashes Jake was seeing throughout did not take away from the story, they actually added to it. I must say I was also impressed by the group dynamic when things started to go downhill for them and going up to the next floor is never a good idea in a haunted building, everyone knows that spirits are not in the basement, they are in the attic. With plenty of buildup, a good story, ghostly sounds, a haunted building, a woman spirit that wants to tell her story and a group leader who has a history with the building, it is a fun ride that will keep you watching to see how the spirits run Farhope Tower to this day. Stay Scared. George A. Romero’s ‘Lost’ Film ‘The Amusement Park’ to Headline Shudder’s ‘Summer of Chills’5/6/2021 Written by John Edward Betancourt Summer is a word that instantly makes us think about going outdoors and enjoying all that nature has to offer, and understandably so. After all, the weather is flawless, the sun is out, and the time is right to enjoy some fresh air and some rays. If anything, the only downside to summer, is the sweltering heat. In fact, sometimes it is so stifling, it drives one indoors to enjoy an iced tea and some AC, and it also pushes one to beat the heat, by checking out a movie. Because summer is also blockbuster season, and those amazing movies are the perfect way to escape the sun’s rays. But with Hollywood and the theater industry limiting some of the on-screen options for the moment, the horror streaming service Shudder is jumping at the opportunity to help out with the time-honored tradition of kicking back and enjoying movies in the summertime, by offering up an impressive slate of films for its ‘Summer of Chills’ event and without further ado, here is the lineup for this incredible event, courtesy of Shudder. Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streamer for horror, thriller and the supernatural, announced today its “Summer of Chills” slate of twelve new original and exclusive films for June, July and August, including the anticipated debut of landmark horror director George A. Romero’s legendary “lost” film ‘The Amusement Park’ on Tuesday, June 8. The robust summer lineup kicks off with ‘Caveat’, an eerie, slow-building, cat-and-mouse thriller, and continues with such marquee films as ‘The Boy Behind the Door’, Justin Powell and David Charbonier’s directorial debut; ‘Jakob’s Wife’, starring horror icon Barbara Crampton; and ‘Kandisha’, the long awaited new supernatural shocker from the French directing duo of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, who return to Shudder following the success of their film ‘Among the Living’; in addition to many others. “Shudder's ‘Summer of Chills’ offers something for everyone with a fantastic line-up of new premieres every week, on top of the best library of curated streaming horror films anywhere,” said Craig Engler, Shudder’s General Manager. “We’re especially excited to have the premiere of legendary director George A. Romero's lost film ‘The Amusement Park’, a must-see piece of cinema history, exclusively on Shudder.” Shudder’s “Summer of Chills” full slate is included below (in chronological order): ‘Caveat’ – Premieres June 3 **A Shudder Original Film** (Available on Shudder US, Shudder CA, Shudder UKI and Shudder ANZ) Lone drifter Isaac accepts a job to look after his landlord's niece, Olga, for a few days in an isolated house on a remote island. It seems like easy money, but there’s a catch: he must wear a leather harness and chain that restricts his movements to certain rooms. Once Olga's uncle, Barrett leaves the two of them alone, a game of cat and mouse ensues as Olga displays increasingly erratic behavior as a trapped Isaac makes a series of horrific discoveries in the house. Directed by Damien Mc Carthy. Romero Foundation and produced by Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, The Amusement Park stars Martin’s Lincoln Maazel as an elderly man who finds himself disoriented and increasingly isolated as the pains, tragedies and humiliations of aging in America are manifested through roller coasters and chaotic crowds. Commissioned by the Lutheran Society, the film is perhaps Romero’s wildest and most imaginative movie, an allegory about the nightmarish realities of growing older, and is an alluring snapshot of the filmmaker's early artistic capacity and style and would go on to inform his ensuing filmography. The “lost” film was restored in 4k by IndieCollect in New York City. ‘Superdeep’ – Premieres June 17 **A Shudder Original Film** (Available on Shudder US, Shudder CA, Shudder UKI and Shudder ANZ) The Kola Superdeep borehole is the largest Russian secret facility. And really, in the end, we here at Nerds That Geek cannot wait to beat the heat from the comfort our couches with this wonderful collection of carefully curated horror films. Written by Scott Edwards You can think what you like about investigative reporters these days, as this has really become a dying art with how social media has changed the world. As everyone wants to get to the bottom of the story before it is actually told, important facts can and are left out as tweets surrounding the situation start to surface. I will not say that this is a bad thing, but I will say that it takes away from what the reporter is trying to tell you. With only a certain amount of characters to get their points across before someone else breaks the story, plenty is left in the shadows as they are always in a race against time to get their story to the public first. While at home and watching the world news, Hannah has found something that has really caught her attention. A rash of vampire like attacks have taken place in Paris and there seems to be a cult connection behind it. Packing up her bags, Hannah arrives in the city of lights and is able to room up with one of her friends, Emmy, who is as excited about the story as she is. With promise of plenty of internet publicity when they get everything in order, this cult will be brought out for the world to see firsthand. Getting their friend Nate to come out to film and utilizing their friend Xavier for his knowledge of contacts and money, the group is ready for an adventure into the shadows that not many people would take. Meeting with a cryptic contact about a thumb drive that has videos and links about the cult activity, Xavier is able to get the price down to what the crew is able to pay, but little does he, or anyone else know that they are being watched through the shadows. As the group is able to get into the drive and find out a couple of sites that are utilized by the cult, they see a female reporter get sucked dry by what appears to be a vampire. As the plot thickens, Hannah finds another video that shows a missing woman who has been changed into a creature of the night and wants to find her. Believing that the footage was shot was from Transylvania, Hannah uses her charm on new friend Christian to pull some strings and arrange for the group to make the trip. Knowing that the secret of the cult can be revealed by this new subject, Hannah is looking for the truth and the fame that will come with it. But as the group gets closer to their final answers, they are picked off one by one by something that does not seem to be of this world, at least not something that everyone believes in… Vampires. I will admit that this is not a vampire movie that will be everyone’s cup of tea, or wine, or whatever you like to drink, it is a little different. The variations come about in the pacing of the movie and the different aspects of what the group is wanting to find. I did like how they gave the nod to Vlad Tepes and went down the list of vampires from history, things I’ve poured over in my spare time. The one thing that I did not understand is that when the group was finally getting the information and footage that they wanted, nothing was done with it, not even a tweet of things to come, much less showing the frightening footage that their cult was putting online. With plenty of blood, two hungry vampires, a cult dying to be left in the shadows and a reporting crew looking to uncover the truth, it’s a pretty good ride overall. When people start to stumble on secrets that are never supposed to see the light of day, there might be a good reason for it. Stay Scared. Written by Scott Edwards It’s funny to think about this, but I was a young man when the art of house renovations became a big business. But back in the late 90’s, early 2000’s, there was not much really happening inside the walls of the home, with the exception of putting some paint on the walls. Now a days, the renovations go much deeper as old homes are truly outdated to what the buyers are looking for. The kitchen in almost every house needs to be redone and it is amazing how high the price of a house can go for when a new kitchen is put in. Although this is still a big business, there is much more that has to go into it than back in the day and for those who are able to pull it off, more power to you. Finishing up their seventh home, Allen’s renovation crew has pulled off a miracle with the size of the house. Already having the next job lined up, Allen has a big reveal planned for the night and everyone is wondering what they are going to be up against next. As the drinks are flowing, Allen decides that it is time to let the crew know about their next huge project that will net them plenty of cash when completed, an old hotel. Thinking that the last house they did was too big, Joel tries to push back on his boss, but there is no stopping Allen with his plan as money has changed hands and the hotel is in their possession. Arriving at the hotel, Joel, Rosa, Deborah, George, Barry and Ana are ready to go, but Allen is nowhere to be found. Seeing that the front door is open, the group wanders into the old building to find that their boss has been lurking in the darkness. Getting a main room set up, the group takes a long look through the old building and finds that they may have bitten off more than they can chew, but it is a job and if they want to see the money, they will have to work for it. But there is something lurking in the halls causing little noises that the group cannot explain, and it has a drive to find something that does not belong to them. Serving twenty years in prison, Donald is finally back on the streets and wants to return to his old hotel. With a couple million dollars stashed there from a robbery many years ago, he wants to get his money back. Talking to his cab driver, the two are able to gain entrance into the old building and telling the landlord Jimmy about the cash, his group start searching the old building to find the money before the new owners are able to get their greedy little hands on it. But time is running out for them. Knowing that the renovation group is in the building as well, tensions start to rise, and it is apparent that their group is not going to be able to accomplish their goal without things getting a little messy. I was pleasantly impressed with this movie as the story continued to play since you get to see what greed will do to someone. I liked the two group’s dynamics, along with the little backstories they got, that could mark anyone of them as a killer under the right conditions. Once the first drop of blood hits the floor, all bets are off, and the movie takes a turn to provide you with a slasher feel that included some great backhand kills when people were getting hit by an axe. With plenty of blood, an old hotel, two groups looking to get rich and greed running rampant, this movie may leave you in shock, or just might leave you questioning who you real friends really are. Stay Scared. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 611 of ‘Fear the Walking Dead’. One common belief about modern mankind, is that disaster brings out the best in us and it is understandable as to why we hold to that. Because time and time again, when something horrible happens and we see our fellow man in trouble… people do indeed band together. To the point where some drop everything to go and help those impacted by the disaster in question and the rest of us, well we tend to donate time and/or resources of our own, to help out those in need. Because we know deep down that helping others is the right thing to do and this collective push to make things right in a time of sorrow, truly gives those that step in, a sense of peace and purpose and hope. Since it does help us to believe in a better tomorrow, one where we are unified as a species. But sadly, as the years go on and the world becomes more interconnected online, we are starting to learn that this belief that we all unite and rally behind the right cause, isn’t exactly correct. Because the pandemic helped to reveal that some folks can be quite selfish when the greater good doesn’t suit their agenda or their beliefs, and that people like that, are eager to use fear to rally others to their cause and that they are quite good at recruitment, much to our chagrin. Which of course, has left a great deal of us baffled, since we simply cannot comprehend exactly what drives good everyday people, some that we’ve known for ages, to suddenly turn on a good cause in the name of wacky beliefs and this is becoming so fascinating… that popular culture is getting in on examining how and why people turn to crackpot theories over common sense and the right thing to do, as evidenced by last night’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead. For ‘The Holding’ explored all of those questions in great detail, and it accomplished this particular feat by taking us into the home of the mysterious group that has been leaving their unique message all over the landscape. Because Alicia and Luciana and Al and Wes, were able to gain access to their stronghold and what they found… was shockingly comforting. Because this strange group of people… didn’t appear to be mad or determined for trouble in the slightest. In fact, they lived in a stable underground lair. One that was completely and utterly sustainable since they had healthy crops growing under UV lights, thanks to zombie enriched soils, and they even had farm animals present to help with food, making it seem as though these people were nothing more than survivalists spreading a message to a decimated world. But it didn’t take long for the group to realize that something was quite amiss in this particular place and that such beautiful sights and sounds weren’t quite as comforting as we initially believed. For the voice of their leader, a man named Teddy, kept spouting propaganda via recording about their cause and of course, the group’s liaison, Riley… offered little answers about this location. Leaving everyone in the dark about what this place’s purpose was and why it even existed. And to top it all off, this sanctuary came complete with a twisted display, one that featured a leaf covered walker as its centerpiece, making this place a tad on the creepy side and well… things only got worse once a surprise reunion came into play. For Wes’ brother Derek was in this sanctuary and once they shared a hug, that exploration into what makes good people turn to bad and selfish ideas… came into play. Because Wes quickly learned that his brother was not the same idealistic man he knew not that long ago. For he genuinely believed in the cause here and that it mattered over anything else and sadly… it took a terrifying turn to reveal exactly what changed for Derek. And as it turns out, the devastation that he and so many others see on a daily basis, combined with the roving hordes of walking corpses, left Derek without hope and full of fear. Which in turn allowed for Teddy and Riley and this mysterious group to fill his head with the belief that they knew a better way. One that would provide all of them with purpose and fulfillment. Provided of course they did horrible things to get there and well… this discovery led to some utter sorrow for Wes, since he had to put down his brother when his dangerous nature was revealed. But what matters more, is that this subtle and unsettling segment, really did make it clear that fear and hopelessness are the driving forces behind this kind of wild belief system. Since fear engenders lurid thoughts. The kind that race unchecked through a person’s mind, to the point where they will believe anything to find some kind of internal peace and sadly, there are individuals eager to seize on that and they are quite dangerous in nature. Since their unwholesome beliefs and promises will motivate fearful individuals to join their cause and stand by it, regardless of the risk inherent that comes with trusting those who have their own agenda. Because the afflicted genuinely believe this person to be their savior supreme. Which really was quite the poignant analysis to place within a horror series where the dead walk the earth, one that quite frankly will hang heavy over the rest of this season. Because unfortunately, this is a group that is clearly planning something quite nefarious, since they believe that ‘something big’ is coming, a cleansing if you will. One that will motivate them to seal up their doors and wait out what happens on the surface and well, when one considers that they are aware of Morgan Jones and that their introduction to us featured a nuclear submarine, we can definitely infer that the ‘healing power’ of nuclear energy is something that they want to unleash upon the world so they can start their ‘destiny’ as rebuilders. Which means that trouble is ahead for Morgan and his friends and who knows what Alicia’s fate is going to be, since Teddy took quite the shine to her and well, all of these elements make this episode quite brilliant when all is said and done. For not only did this episode do an incredible job of examining a current problem that is plaguing our world, but it raised the stakes in a supremely sneaky manner. For there is a real trouble hanging over this world now and it won’t be long before Teddy’s group make a push to move their plans along now that they are known to the world, and that likely means that these final episodes of season six are going to become quite tense in nature. As Morgan and his band of heroes work hard to stop a forthcoming nuclear winter and hopefully that means this story can flip the theme present here on its head and show us a fight where everyone is unified for the right cause, one where the forces of good survive and these especially disturbing monsters… retreat to their sanctuary, in utter defeat. Until next time. |
