Ask anyone what they would do if millions upon millions of dollars fell into their lap through the lottery or inheritance and you’ll get back some fascinating answers. Since some will speak to how that would motivate them to immediately quit their job and do whatever they please, simply because they would finally have the money to do so. While others will speak to how they would be eager to use that money to embrace an extravagant lifestyle and enjoy the good things in life at last. Yet there are some, who would see that kind of money as a burden of sorts and would instead opt to make themselves comfortable and secure before using that cash to help others and leave not a dollar behind legacy wise. But while those are fascinating answers for certain, the fact of the matter is… we simply don’t know how we would act if given the chance to enjoy riches untold. We would simply have to decide in the moment what that money would mean to us and really, that particular scenario is top of mind today… largely because it served as one of the big focal points of the next episode of Bosch: Legacy. For ‘Bloodline’ saw Harry Bosch finally sit down with Whitney Vance’s heir, a woman named Vibiana, and of course… reveal unto her that she was the granddaughter of one of biggest businessmen in all the land, and if she were to take the DNA test and claim her rightful place as heir… she would stand to have enough money to buy a small nation… or perhaps help others with those vast riches. Which was quite the incredible decision to make, one that Vibiana really had to ponder upon. Because at the same time… this was blood money. The kind that killed countless innocents including her father. But in the end, after great thought… she really did come to understand what that fortune could do for others, and she agreed to go through the claim process. In the hopes of building a beautiful legacy and well… it was fascinating to watch a person struggle with what we believe to be a simple decision and kudos to the show for going that route and injecting a little realism and honesty into something that is oft considered a dream. But of course, her decision was not without risk of course. Since the folks at Vance’s company had discussions about doing something drastic about this news and of course… Sloan is still popping up where he isn’t wanted and no one knows where his loyalties lie, but him. However, while it was fascinating to watch this play out and see major progress take place with the Vance case at last, there were more fascinating storylines to be found in this tale. Such as how Maddie and Honey took polarizing sides in the shooting that took place in the last episode. Since Maddie was doing her best to be a good cop and do right by the situation since a gun was found in the car. Whereas on the flip side, Honey was privy to the shadier details of what went on, such as the outright entrapment that took place here. Which in turn motivated her to choose the side of the family and represent them in a wrongful death suit against the Los Angeles Police Department. And what makes this so fascinating is the conflict that now looms on the horizon between Maddie and Honey. Since it is obvious the sides they’ve now taken has put them on a collision course of sorts, one where morals and reasoning will be tested. Plus, Bosch made a little progress on the deceased doctor’s case, and it seems a dirty cop might be involved in this mess and well, in the end, all of these juicy and engaging storylines, made for one compelling episode. One that was obviously transitional in nature and designed to set the stage for the finale, but that’s just fine. Because we know that this series is going make every single moment pay off in spades and well, that particular bit of knowledge, just compels us to continue the journey post haste. So, we can see what will become of the Vance fortune and see if a longstanding and healthy friendship and mentorship can survive this latest trial and tribulation that has befallen the City of Angels. Until next time.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 303 of ‘London Kills’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Undoubtedly, one of the hardest lessons that police officers have to learn… is to remain impartial in everything they do, and it makes sense as to why that would be so tough to absorb. For police officers are human beings and the horrible things they see in the line of duty, impact them emotionally and evoke a response, and having to hold those emotions back and just handle the moment as it comes… while fear or anger is surging… cannot be easy in the slightest. Not to mention, sometimes that response is personal in nature and that could potentially bring about big-time trouble if the circumstances are just right. But impartiality is an expectation of the job and these intrepid officers do have to figure out how to juggle both and really, that particular lesson is top of mind, simply because Detective Constable Billie Fitzgerald was forced to reckon with it in the next episode of London Kills. For the death of a locksmith in ‘Blood’, made Billie suspicious. In that, she genuinely believed that she knew the deceased in some capacity and well… it turned out that she was right. For he was involved in the death of her father years ago and well, just like that… this case became personal for Billie, and she was forced to learn on the fly about objectivity and that was no easy task when all is said and done. Largely because, all signs pointed to the man that was put away for killing her dad… who was of course, back on the street… as the man responsible for this murder. At least… in her mind. Because despite her best efforts to prove that was the case, the alibi, and the suspect, painted a picture of a reformed man. One that really was penitent for his actions. But Billie just couldn’t let that hunch lie and she kept digging, and thankfully so did the team, and minute by minute… lies were exposed and truths were revealed. The kind that eventually revealed that Billie’s hunches were correct and taught her the power of objectivity. Because had she let her darker demons and need for revenge take hold, the man responsible for so much pain in her life, never would have gone back to prison to spend the rest of his life there for murder. But she did the right thing in the end and walked away a more balanced officer for certain, one that finally had closure. However, while it was wonderful to see Billie learn that lesson and grow and find peace in the process… we would be remiss to not point out that the case revolving around Grace Harper also took on new life in this tale. Because Vivienne took the time to go out to dinner with the Chief Superintendent and work to get him to admit to being in trouble with the wrong people and well… that didn’t go well. In part because he was reticent to name names and also because… he and Vivienne were spotted by the dirty cops while out together. Raising the stakes and putting both of their lives in jeopardy, since dark forces now know that their top stooge is talking and no good can come from that. But all of that aside, this was still a great episode through and through, one that was part mystery and part character study and having that combination present here was a real treat. Since it was engaging in every sense of the word and who doesn’t like character growth? Not to mention, you cannot go wrong with the fact that this series keeps finding ways to advance that darker plot in dynamic ways since that surprise spotting really does leave the viewer worried and downright eager to continue the journey. To see in part, what other brilliant stories, filled with humanity await us, but to also see how the unit rallies around Vivienne… now that this corruption case is about to be taken to the Nth degree. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Something that is genuinely fascinating about our modern world, is how people are suddenly eager to lose themselves within worlds that were previously unknown to them. A feat that is being accomplished by way of technology, since the internet and its vast information, along with the power of social media… are allowing for us to experience the lives of others. And the power and allure of connecting with a stranger and the fascinating lives they lead… does indeed compel us to immerse ourselves not only within their story, but anything else about them that tickles our fancy. Their career for instance, or their city… the list just goes on and on. Which are acts that some could say, are positive in nature, since that does help us to learn. But what makes this so fascinating and compelling these days… is the sheer fact that so many, take such curiosity to such dark places. For some become obsessed with the person that has caught their eye and that newfound obsession leads them to take part in wild behaviors, the kind that are unhealthy and uncomfortable. Which leads all of us wonder, what is it that motivates someone to want to escape reality in that manner, and what could compel them to indulge in behaviors they absolutely know are wrong deep down, and well, it just so happens that Prime Video is about to be host to a brand-new series that explores just that, in Chloe. Now in this particular series we are introduced to a woman named Becky Green, who is doing her best to get by in life. For her mother is ill and that puts a lot on her shoulders and that seems to motivate her to use social media and an Instagram-esque site to help her to cope, since she does find solace in escaping into the online life of a woman named Chloe Fairbourne. But when Chloe dies suddenly one day, Becky’s world is turned upside down. For her core escape is gone and she simply must know how or why this happened, which in turn, motivates Becky to adopt a new identity and lie and push her way into the lives of those left behind by Chloe to get the answers she seeks. But it doesn’t take long for this attempt to understand to become unhealthy in nature, leaving the viewer to wonder… if this push for the truth is more about closure… or obsession and escape. Which is… a brilliant setup for a brilliant series. One that really does dive deep into the dangers of social media and the inherent problems that accompany the need for some to escape their everyday lives. Since that brings about a fascinating character study. One that leaves no stone unturned in its exploration on those two topics… while weaving together a powerful story. One that manages to surprise the viewer at every turn and goes far deeper than one might expect. But what truly matters more here, is that this show offers up that no-holds barred look at a problem that is growing in our world and that makes this show a must-watch for certain. Since it genuinely solves the mystery of and why people are so eager to embrace an online obsession over the ups and down of everyday life. But of course, to properly inform us and engage us, a quality cast has to sell the obsession and the desire to escape and that’s present here too. For Erin Doherty is simply electric as Becky and sells every strange decision she makes with a gravitas that feels painfully real and organic, and she is bookended wonderfully by her supporting cast with Pippa Bennett-Warner and Brandon Michael Hall offering up some performances of note, since they add incredible depth to the journey and well… all of these elements make for a compelling watch. One that grabs hold and never lets go and the best news of all, is that we are days away from being able to experience this show. For Chloe arrives on Prime Video this Friday, June 24, 2022, and we here at NTG cannot wait to break down each episode with all of you in great detail and share our interviews with the cast and crew of this dynamic series in the days to come, as we count down to the premiere of a poignant and powerful new show. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 203 of ‘P-Valley’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Normally, television shows that feature a slice of life, if you will, tend to have some kind of larger plot point looming over their season. Something that the characters will all have to work together to resolve, in an effort to give the story gravitas and to keep it from slipping into the mundane stuff that everyone doesn’t enjoy dealing with. But when a show features quality characters that the audience cares about, ones that are incredibly dynamic and intelligent and offer up a level of relatability that is irresistible, that particular show can do whatever it wants with those characters and keep the audience on the edge of their seats, and that is precisely why P-Valley on STARZ continues to be such a compelling and engaging show. For its characters are incredibly well-fleshed out and human and dynamic and the importance of that is relevant to our discussion today… simply because those elements allowed for a slice of life episode to take place on Sunday. One that was devoid of any major plot progress but still was compelling and amazing. A feat that ‘The Dirty Dozen’ accomplished by having us spend a little time with Mercedes while she stepped away from The Pynk. So, we could see how she was going to make money while her shoulder healed, a move that ironically… allowed for us to get to know her and her past better, and why her relationship with her daughter is so frayed and that led to some powerful moments for certain, the kind that we simply could not look away from. Not to mention, this episode also focused heavily on Lil’ Murda and his Dirty Dozen tour. Allowing for a grand exploration on the power of dreams to take place, since we saw Murda in his element and enjoying himself like never before and oddly enough… being on stage and wowing crowds and enjoying adoring fans… helped him to understand how much he wanted to share this kind of wonder with someone he loved. Which in turn, helped him to outright admit, that he loved Uncle Clifford and constantly had Clifford on his mind and well… that was beautiful to watch take place since it means that Murda is finally being honest about who he is and it would seem that his love will be reciprocated when he's ready to let Clifford in, as evidenced by how every postcard he sent was on display in Clifford’s room. Plus, this episode also stayed close to its roots, by giving us more insight as to how life in the club really is. Thanks to some quality time with the new girls and how they’re eager to do whatever they must to get those stacks of paper from the willing, and we were even privy to a little commentary on the world’s complicated relationship with religion right now. Since Pastor Patrice’s power play to move the town in a direction she sees fit was met with great and justified resistance. A move that speaks to how there are those out there right now, who believe that church should have a greater role in government, despite what the Constitution might say, and it will be quite interesting to see where this power struggle takes us in the weeks to come. But what matters most is that this was indeed… a perfect slice of life tale. One that covered a lot of stuff that other shows would deem boring or mundane. But here, it was electric and powerful and somehow relatable since we too have pushed ourselves to great length to get money and eventually get in touch with who we are on a fundamental level, be it sexuality wise or morality wise, and of course… you can never go wrong with quality commentary on our world and that just makes this, a wonderful episode when all is said and done. One that once again reminds us that P-Valley is a genuinely special show, one that knows how to really reach us on a fundamental level and sadly, we are once again left counting down the minutes to this brilliant series, so we can once again be treated to bold stories that defy convention and strike a chord deep within. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Two of ‘Dark Winds’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Often times, psychological thrillers that also feature quite the mystery, tend to wait until the end of the season to tip their hand and reveal their secrets and understandably so. After all, this is about building up the suspense to a big reveal, so tipping one’s hand early, would be foolish in nature and could potentially drive the viewer away since they now know what they need to know. But now and again, you run into a story in this vein that opts to put a bevy of its cards on the table early in a bold and brazen manner, for fascinating and logical reasons to say the least, and it just so happens, that a brand-new juicy thriller that set the stage for a grand mystery in its opening chapter last week, offered up some early epic reveals during Sunday night’s episode. For Dark Winds surprised us with a lot of answers regarding Joe’s backstory and what would become of the fact that Jim Chee is an FBI Agent that is working undercover with the Navajo Police and what made these reveals so worth our while… is that they didn’t appear to be headed our way in the slightest, early on. In fact, all of the flashbacks regarding Joe and what appeared to be quite the fateful day on the reservation that opened up ‘The Male Rain Approaches’, seemed to be designed to further deepen the mystery. Since they made it clear that Joe has some skeletons in his closet, the kind that ache and run deep and well… that’s precisely where this show took the time to surprise us, since it wasted little time in explaining his past and why he has such bad blood with some people on the reservation. As it turns out, a long time ago… Joe had a son. A bright young man that was eager to live life to the fullest and enjoy the moment, and it was obvious that Joe was proud of his boy and eager to see where life was going to take him. But during a spiritual ceremony involving Guy, it was revealed that something ugly was going to happen at the very oil field where Joe Jr. and Guy worked, and that was never expressed to anyone beyond those that went into the tent that night. Which in turn… led to the death of Joe Jr. and a grand fight that left the Lieutenant on the outs with people he saw as family and that was quite the powerful surprise to take part in. Since it explains a lot about Joe and really helps us to understand why he’s so keen to drive peace and unity amongst the people that live here, so they don’t let harm come to one another.
As for the Jim Chee plot, well… his true identity was revealed in no time in this tale. Because Joe knew something was up and quickly managed to get Jim to admit his true loyalties and job title with minimal fuss and well, rather than be up in arms about it… he used it to his advantage. By using Jim’s connections with the Bureau to get the autopsy report regarding the dead, and to have the Feds analyze the gross water Joe came across at the end of last week’s tale and well… by giving Jim a little trust and freedom to complete his job with no fear of reprisal, some interesting developments took place. In that Joe was able to learn that Anna’s death involved cardiac arrest, as though she was scared to death… and also that hydraulic fluid was in that water. A fact that Jim kept quiet… so he could use that revelation to be the hero himself and steal this investigation away from his shady boss… which was quite the smooth and ambitious move.
But there was mention of legitimate reason for going this route super early in the story and well… that autopsy report is part of that. Because this particular tale also amped up the spiritual mystery set up in the previous episode. Since there are strange happenings taking place around the reservation and there was even implication that a Skinwalker might be involved in this madness. Not to mention, this episode also revealed some of the players involved in the bank robbery and how dangerous and bold they are, making it clear that this story wants to remove some mysteries from the equation now, so it can shift its focus to the robbery in question and the motivations behind it, and of course… to dive deeper into that spiritual stuff. Because there is a lot to unpack with that, and an opportunity to really dive deep into the legends and mysticisms that Indigenous Americans believe in, and hopefully the show does indeed go that route and really takes the time to educate all of us on such matters. Since there are but a handful of mainstream stories that take the time to do so. But while we wait to dive into those new mysteries, in the meantime, we can bask in the wonder of an amazing tale. One that really did offer up some fine answers and moved the plot along at breakneck pace… all while taking the time to creep us out just enough. Because that late night scene on that ranch, was the stuff of nightmares and well… this is an episode that definitely engages and leaves the viewer eager for more. In order to see what other twists and turns and big moments await us as this mystery unfolds. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for the series premiere of ‘Mathis Family Matters’. It is definitely safe to say, that reality television shows that feature an in-depth look at a particular celebrity family’s lives, can feel a touch disingenuous at times. Largely because such shows can be a little too escapist in nature, since we are privy to daily activities in their lives… that we cannot relate to in the slightest nor do we understand. But they do entertain regardless, because at the same time… they showcase a part of the world we never would have seen or experienced otherwise, and that is why they remain popular with audiences. But every once in a while, you run into a reality television show about a celebrity that manages to take that formula and utterly turn it upside down. All by offering us, a show that really takes the time to remind us that celebrities are people too, and they have the same struggles we do, they just happen to live a life where they get to go to work and do something they utterly love every day, and it just so happens… that E! Entertainment is now host to a new show in that vein. For Mathis Family Matters is indeed a different kind of celebrity family themed television reality show. One that offers an intimate and realistic look at the life and times of Greg Mathis and his family, who is likely better known as Judge Mathis from the television show that shares that namesake and well… when we catch up with Greg in ‘Meet the Mathises’ & ‘Love, Mathis Style’ his family is being reunited in his Los Angeles home. For all of his kids are coming home as they work to start over fresh in L.A. and well… this homecoming is what allows for this series to defy the norms. Because just like that we get to learn just how down to earth this family is and how much they love one another and support one another. Which is… a pretty accurate representation of how American families are across the country, and a rarity to see in this genre of television, and in getting to know this family… we quickly come to learn… what has built that unity. For this is a family that started out in Detroit years ago, and Greg worked hard to work his way up to the top, because he wanted his family's life to be different than the one he experienced growing up and the fruits of his labor are on display here because of that edict, and courtesy of how these siblings treat one another. Since you watch these siblings support each other and step in to make sure that each one is and will be happy, especially when one of them is close to say, making some serious dating mistakes. Plus, we get to see how Greg and his wife Linda love each other dearly and work to keep the magic going after thrity-plus years of marriage and well… all of these elements make for a refreshing reality show. One that genuinely feels REAL for a change and isn’t full of fights or drama. Just a family, filled with people trying to get by in life and that really does make for a special series. One that sucks you in and immediately demands your attention so you can just enjoy this slice of life through and through and be entertained by a family that feels akin to your own. Not to mention, there’s a lot of fun to be found in this series as well. Since this family talks about real things often and that allows for funny stories about years gone by to come to light or for hilarious jokes to play out in front of our eyes and well, all of these elements make this a must watch for certain. Because it is rare in this day and age of peak television to find a reality show that just wants to be this honest and features a family that is so loving and so supportive of one another. As evidenced by Greg’s decision to support one of his sons, Greg Jr., regarding his decision to come out and well… it is moments like that, that truly make this the most honest reality show on the air right now, and it will be interesting to see what other wonderful moments await us in the weeks to come as we continue to be invited into the home of a genuinely all-American family. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Two of ‘Becoming Elizabeth’. To revisit the series premiere, click here.
When we last settled in to discuss the phenomenal new STARZ series, Becoming Elizabeth, we talked at length about how the series premiere of this show… did a stunning job of setting up the journey we were about to embark upon. One that would focus heavily on every single formative moment, both good and bad, that Elizabeth Tudor was going to experience on her way to becoming the iconic queen that fascinates to this day. A feat that episode accomplished, by allowing for us to watch in ‘real time’, as Elizabeth embraced the spark of leadership that the current situation of the world afforded her. If anything, taking a moment to revisit the incredible setup that premiere offered us is critical to our discussion today, simply because the next episode reinforced the show’s goal in a supremely bold and dynamic manner. For ‘You Cannot Keep the Birds From Flying Over Your Head’ is a story that wasted little time in exploring what comes next for a once and future queen when the spark for leadership is ignited within a great leader’s soul and in the case of Elizabeth… that involved beginning to learn how politics work. Which means that she needed to spend a little time in this story, observing the world around her and the people in her life to see how they conduct themselves and what moves them and upsets them and brings them joy. Since it is crucial for a queen to know her people and their needs and wants and well… thanks to a fascinating crisis of faith within her family, she was able to do just that. For the young King rather enjoyed poking fun at Catholicism and believed that the Protestant faith should become the official religion of England, and that of course, horrified Mary, who was devout in her faith and of the belief that it should always be respected. Which immediately caused a divide amongst brother and sister, and that allowed for Elizabeth to just… observe. Observe how faith played a huge part in politics in her world and observe how people used faith and loyalty to try and manipulate others. As evidenced by the fact that Mary and King Edward VI consistently went back and forth with the future queen about where her loyalties should lie and how she should side with one of them as quickly as possible. Which did indeed teach Elizabeth a great deal about reading people, since it made her privy to a bevy of conversations about appearances and needs and wants and once, she had a good read on the room… the next lesson and progression in her slow ascension to the throne took place. In that, it’s not enough to just be observant and able to read what’s happening around you, one must also learn how to play the game and see where it takes you. And after careful consideration and thought, the kind that weighed both the positive and negatives of the two sides vying for her loyalty, she quickly made efforts to side with her brother. A move that will allow for her to see firsthand, the impact of loyalty, as she begins to toy with the political games of the time and continue her grand lessons.
However, while those elements could have carried this episode for the entire hour, since old school politics in this manner are indeed fascinating, we would be remiss to not point out other critical moments in this tale. Such as the fact that Elizabeth’s desire to be more, came forth in her earlier years in other ways one might not think of, as evidenced by how the royal hunt went. Since she was the one who told Robert Dudley to stand aside while she handled the killing blow to the stag they were hunting. A move that really did speak to how she expected to lead the way and how she broke down norms for women in her time, since that was a move that shocked everyone involved and helped her to grow in the process. But sadly… her progress here as someone that wished to stand out, was undermined by Mister Thomas Seymour and his inability… to keep it in his pants.
Because once again, he lusted after Elizabeth in this tale with impunity and put on all the charms and once again, he found himself denied out of Elizabeth’s understand of morality. But a man like Thomas, who is clearly eager to groom and exert power over women… would not be swayed by a simple no. Which in turn led to some incredibly uncomfortable moments, the kind that saw him toss faithfulness aside and well… assault the young princess in an effort to feel that power and while this was hard to watch for certain, it is critical to show this unhealthy relationship in the raw. For this is a series that aims to parallel how little has changed in our modern world, and that there are indeed men like Thomas out there today… grooming and manipulating in this manner and having that behavior on the screen is critical to educating the rest of us to the signs and the behaviors… to call it out and stop it. But parallels aside, we would be foolish to not point out the historical accuracy of this particular story as well. Since Edward VI’s policies toward religion were a huge part of his temporary and brief reign, and Mary’s devotion to the Catholic faith is also well known… and a huge part of her time as Queen as well. Which is a decision storytelling wise that makes this… a supremely intelligent show for certain. Because that means it is genuinely faithful to the history and will educate the audience as it takes the time to entertain them, and it will be fascinating to see what other historically accurate Easter eggs writer Anya Reiss has injected into this as we continue our journey through season one of this fascinating and dynamic and downright engaging series. But what matters most about this particular tale, is the sheer fact that it did a wonderful job of growing Princess Elizabeth Tudor in an organic manner. Because to rush her development into a queen here, would feel cheap and insulting. But little moments such as these, where she learns from the world and executes accordingly, is the stuff that grounds this show and gives us exactly what we want and need from this series. And it will be equally as fascinating to see what new lesson awaits Elizabeth next week as she continues to inch close and closer to a history that was nothing more than a mere moment and role for her and of course, we simply must know how she is going to handle the advances of Thomas Seymour. As he continues to press his unsettling attempts to make her another notch on his belt, simply because he believes he can. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 205 of ‘Dynasties’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. When one thinks of the Meerkat, one is instantly reminded of the popular BBC America series, Meerkat Manor and the wonderful follow-up, Meerkat Manor: Rise of the Dynasty. For those shows truly thrust the meerkat into the spotlight and in doing so… taught audiences a great deal about these cute little critters. In that, a dynasty means the world to them and that they are quite good at helping one another to thrive, since they work as a unit to ensure that the little ones born make it to see another day. In fact, both of those shows have done such a phenomenal job of exploring how their family life works, that it came as quite the surprise that these little cuties were going to be featured in this week’s episode of Dynasties II. Because if we’ve already seen years’ worth of footage regarding the meerkat and their way of life and how they raise their young, what on earth could a brand-new documentary about them teach us? Well as it turns out… plenty. Because what we often forget is that a great deal of what any being is good at in this world, requires practice and failure and everything in between and that also applies to the meerkat. For the ones we see on those two shows are polished families with experienced matriarchs that have worked hard to be effective at raising generations of their family line. So, the next episode of this series decided it best that we see the true beginning of a meerkat dynasty and how difficult and painful it can be to build one, when the family is made up of the wrong members and is highly inexperienced. A feat that ‘Meerkat’ accomplished, by introducing us to a matriarch named Maghogho and she was of course… in the midst of working to build her own dynasty and early on, it appeared as though she was on her way to making that happen. For she had seven pups in her brood, including two that were born by way of other family members. Plus, she had an alpha male/patriarch to the fam and a safe space to raise them. But alas, one bad day… changed a great deal for this family. For a death by snakebite panicked Maghogho and she opted to move her family as quickly as possible to safer grounds and well, that brought about complete and utter disaster for a family that was ill prepared to face the real challenges awaiting a new dynasty. For the adults simply forgot, that the children come first whenever there is trouble and by letting that slip their mind, six of the pups were lost on the initial run away from their home, leaving the family devastated but hopeful that perhaps they could thrive. But even then, hope quickly faded. For a mistake from the alpha, saw him cast out, and another panicked moment, saw the last pup die. Leaving all of us to wonder if Maghogho would ever succeed at raising a dynasty. But the changes made to the family hierarchy and the pain of those horrible moments… did indeed teach them valuable lessons about what it means to be a family and that allowed for everyone to make the next generation a priority and finally bring forth hope that a dynasty was going to come to fruition. But while that is indeed a happy and joyous ending to this tale, make no mistake about it… we and Maghogho had to go through utter hell to get there. Because this was a devastating ride through and through, one that really informed us of how difficult it is for new parents to understand how to raise a family in the wild and how much brutal trial and error goes into becoming a quality family through and through. However, this series deserves praise for being honest with us and showing us what those tough times look like, so that we have a complete picture of how things go in the wild and how much work goes into creating a dynasty, and that makes this a poignant and powerful tale. One that truly speaks to nature’s tenacity in the face of adversity since these little critters pulled off the seemingly impossible. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 305 of ‘The Boys’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
It is definitely safe to say, that season three of The Boys on Prime Video, has been the show’s darkest season to date… and that is quite the accomplishment. After all, season one’s introduction of this wild world where supes fly free, featured some dark and sobering and outright gross moments and season two… well it featured a grand battle royale with a freakin’ Nazi superhero. But come rain or come shine, this show is eager to continue to push the envelope, and it is accomplishing that particular goal this season by allowing for Homelander to simply embrace his darkest demons and put them on display, to the point where carnage is everywhere, and the good guys are losing themselves in the fight. In fact, our heroes are so broken and rattled by what they’re seeing and dealing with, they’re stooping to new lows and indulging themselves in powers to ‘level the playing field’, when in fact… they’re compromising their morals and their mission. If anything, this season has been so incredibly bleak, that one has to wonder if year three can in fact get any darker and well… wouldn’t you know it? It most certainly can. As evidenced by how this week’s tale played out. For ‘The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies’ is an episode that was filled to the brim with some ugly moments. The kind that saw Homelander continue to tighten his grip, alongside a sequence that featured some powerful commentary on our world… and we were also privy to more of Butcher and Hughie’s downward spiral. But before we get to the last item on that list, let’s talk about that commentary and Homelander’s actions… because the latter is losing his mind at this point and truly indulging in every desire to consolidate his power. Even going so far as to black bag Maeve for sleeping with Butcher since he saw that as a sign, she was coming to get him and figured he could nip that in the bud now. Plus, he is steadily enabling other piece of trash supes. Since Blue Hawk’s ‘attempt’ at an apology to the African American community where he patrols, revealed his true racist colors when he went on a tirade and rampage when that very apology was rightfully rejected by the community, and wow… did that whole mess speak volumes to the problems we’re facing in America right now, and how garbage individuals like Blue Hawk, are discovering newfound confidence when it comes to spreading hate.
All of that aside however, both of those storylines really it made it clear that things are starting to spiral out of control with the supes and that’s scary to say the least and that uncomfortable reality… is what motivated Butcher and Hughie to do more stupid things. Such as lie to MM. Because they tried to convince him that they wanted nothing more than to bring down Soldier Boy, who had returned to America, and used his extensive knowledge to meet the man known as The Legend. Whom as it turned out, loved sex and cocaine, and forced the Boys to learn about that love and his conquests throughout the years as the door price for information on Soldier Boy's potential whereabouts. And once they got through his hilarious and wacky stories, they finally came to learn that Soldier Boy was likely headed to reunite with Crimson Countess.
Which gave the Boys a chance to get out there to her place, and secure the Countess before Solider Boy’s arrival and use her to get to him… but alas, that’s when things took another dark turn. Since MM was immobilized by Butcher and Hughie led away Starfire, who came down to help. All because Butcher and Hughie knew they needed Soldier Boy to help them bring down Homelander and what better way to build that alliance, than with an honest little chat revolving around a partnership and by surrendering up an old love. All so that Soldier Boy could get some answers about his horrific time in Russia and well… as it turned out, the Crimson Countess sold him out and paid the price in doing so… as did Butcher and Hughie. Since they’re now, all in on working with a broken hero that is out for revenge. A move that will undoubtedly shatter more relationships, including Hughie and Starfire’s and well, that is indeed one hell of a way to end this episode. One that was truly hopeless and devastating in nature. To the point where even the bright spots are almost overshadowed by the darkness present in this tale. But thankfully, the Legend’s outright hilarious stories about drugs and sex, and Kimiko’s musical number in her mind… and Seth Rogan’s wild and lotion heavy cameo, did offer up necessary levity… and we should enjoy it while it lasts. Because this season is all about revenge and it is likely only going to get uglier from here. Courtesy of a potentially unholy pact between the Boys and Solider Boy, and a boatload of Compound V-24. Something that is genuinely fascinating about the concept of change, is how humanity continues to respond to it in such a polarizing manner. Because on the one hand, we preach its power and how embracing change will help us grow as a species, through the lessons change teaches us. But on the other, we also deride change every chance we get for upsetting the daily order and habits of our lives… to the point where we resist it or… ironically make a change to attempt to obtain what can never be obtained again. And what makes this so fascinating is that… it just doesn’t make sense why we hold to one side of this notion while being quick to embrace the other and well… perhaps that is the point. For we are quirky beings that are still young as a species and perhaps just being self-aware of our duality is the first all-important step to shedding it, and one fine way to put it on display, is through storytelling. Where we can quietly observe and reflect upon our wild nature and it just so happens, that the next episode of For All Mankind on Apple TV+, focuses hard on the polarizing way in which we handle change. A feat that ‘Game Changer’ accomplished… by injecting a little change into life at NASA. For Molly learned of a forthcoming advisory committee that was going to help her determine which astronauts were going to head into space as commanders of critical missions and well… that didn’t sit well with her in the slightest. Because she utterly believed that the old way of doing things was the right way to handle business at NASA and that a board composed of outsiders would create a softer fleet, one devoid of edge or ambition. Which in turn, motivated her to name Admiral Ed Baldwin as the commander of the Mars Mission. To keep old traditions alive and to show everyone that making changes at NASA was a poor idea. But alas, Molly overstepped her bounds here and lost her job because of that. For Margo wasn’t good with the council being overridden for the sake of glory and ego. Not when it stood to adapt NASA to modern times, and the decision to fire Molly… also brought down collateral damage for Ed. Since he was removed as commander in favor of Danielle and that left Ed beside himself and angry with NASA because he simply could not understand how the agency had transformed into a place where he believed instinct was no longer rewarded.
Which made, for a fascinating examination of how much we deride change. Because Ed and Molly truly fought it with every fiber of their being. Out of the belief that this would genuinely ruin NASA at a critical time and make America a laughingstock once again in the space race. But alas, they’re in the wrong in this tale. Because in this alternate 1990s… it is obvious now that having an edge in space travel isn’t as important as it used to be. Yes, getting to Mars, first, is indeed important. But decades of missions and data give rise to different thought, as to how to approach a planetary landing… and the right person for the overall mission should indeed be at the conn of a deep space shuttle. But the veterans have important roles too, as mentors, since new generations need to draw from the experiences of all to become well-rounded explorers.
But alas, the damage was done and that in turn led to an examination regarding the flip side of our thoughts on change. Specifically, how we make big changes to get hold of a status quo. Which was handled by Ed. Because not only did he want NASA to stick to the old ways of trusting seasoned and bold veterans to lead the charge, but he wanted to be revered again, and he wanted retribution for not being the first man to be on Mars… and that motivated him to make a change to get what he wanted, which in this instance, involved joining the newly resurgent Helios. Which purchased what was left of Polaris to get a jump on everyone to get to Mars first... and well… that’s a move that definitely is going to shake up the race to the red planet. For now, there are three parties interested in being the first to Mars and that is going to make for one competitive space race, one that doesn’t have to be. Because this is about something bigger now, it’s about the future and sadly, ego and agency and old haunts are keeping everyone from realizing that. But what matters more here, is that this episode did an amazing job of analyzing its theme and how far we have to go toward embracing change and who knows, maybe a voyage to Mars would do just that. Either way, leave it to this show to find a way to shake things up in such a creative manner and well… this is another episode that definitely has our minds and souls demanding more. So, we can see what kind of impact, Ed’s bold move will have, on the push to put humanity on the surface of Mars. Until next time. |
