Written by John Edward BetancourT THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...I have to admit, that every single time I settle in to watch a new episode of Jack Ryan, I really have no idea what to expect from said episode and quite frankly, that’s a good thing. Because this television series is trying new things with every new story that it brings to the table and it’s shattered spy drama tropes along the way and well, it’s a downright thrill to know that the unexpected is going to come my way when I hit play on my Amazon Prime App and as it turns out, ‘The Wolf’ was another tale that was par for the course since it too was filled to the brim with unexpected twists and turns. Oddly enough, all of the surprises present in this tale came by way of the Suleiman brothers, since their respective journeys are what left my jaw dropped and I suppose we should start with the first stunner in this story, in that…Mousa finally revealed what exactly he’s up to and as it turns out, he has plans to create the biggest Islamic State the world has ever known. And he plans to accomplish such a feat, by being a true and pure beacon for all those who worship Allah and he made his first big move toward creating his vision for a perfect Islamic nation by making quite the power play against the man he works for, and uniting what should have become a fractured cell with a powerful speech on the need to have a state free from corruption and ego and well, thanks to those words and a little bit of cash, he now has a small army at his disposal. Yet while Mousa was making his power play, his brother continued to make his escape through the mountains of France, with Jack hot on his tail and this little cat and mouse game ended up being quite the harrowing sequence of events, simply due to the fact that eventually, Jack and his task force inadvertently ran into Ali Suleiman at a gas station and that led to a disastrous gunfight that cost the French agent we met in the last episode, Sandrine, her life, and eventually…Jack was forced to put down Ali as well without gathering any information about what the Suleiman cell was up to and to complicate matters further, the death and devastation that came about from this gun fight left Jack shattered, but at least he found some solace in Cathy Mueller’s arms when he returned state side. But the true stunner of the night, came about in the closing moments of this tale, since the attack that Mousa has been working toward for some time now, finally came to fruition, and it all related to the priest we briefly met a few episodes ago mere moments before he was stabbed in the middle of the night. Because while people mourned the loss of that good and kind preacher, Mousa’s men armed and eventually detonated a cache of chemical weapons after locking everyone in the church, making for a chilling sequence as we watched these innocent lives panic as they clamored for air and it’s clear now, that Mousa bin Suleiman is going to declare war on the West’s religious foundations to rally more to his cause… If anything, this one turned out to be quite the dark tale. In fact, the only real bright moment was the fact that Cathy and Jack stopped playing the puppy love game and finally admitted their feelings for one another, but that was grossly overshadowed by the fact that Mousa is consolidating power and starting his murdering spree and I fear it will only get worse once he learns about the death of this brother and well, wow is the best word to describe this episode. Because the story really went into overdrive in this one and dropping something this big in our laps at the halfway point of the season, means that greater moments are on their way and I’m both nervous and excited to see what comes next as the hunt for Suleiman undoubtedly heats up. Until next time.

Written by John Edward Betancourt THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...When it comes to spy dramas, you’re basically guaranteed to have a fun time. Because the story will be filled to the brim with thrilling action and adventure, the kind that takes your breath away, and you’ll also be treated to a rousing cat and mouse game between a dynamic hero and a dastardly villain as the story catapults you toward a heart-pounding ending where the good guy is triumphant. Unless that spy drama happens to be Jack Ryan. Because this is clearly a series that wants to separate itself from clichés as quickly as possible and for proof, look no further than the third episode in this series, ‘Black 22’. Because this particular tale, was devoid of every single trope one finds in this genre, and instead took the time to focus upon the spoils of war and how the evil that men do impacts their conscience and shockingly enough, it also worked to show us the fallout/aftermath of the some of the acts that normally force us to shovel popcorn into our mouths since this one opened up with corpses littered everywhere in the apartment in Paris, and with the adrenaline wearing off, the sobering fact that people died and died horribly sunk in for Jack and the audience as well and that set the tone for this bleak tale, which quickly shifted gears to the other explorations I made mention of a moment ago. Case in point, how those evil deeds rattle the men who carry them out, since we saw Ali Suleiman struggle mightily with his past and the things he was ordered to do in this tale. Because it was inherently clear that the old friend who patched him up, saw him as a good man who had made some poor choices and regardless of the harm he had caused others, Ali was shown nothing but kindness in this safe house and it was fascinating to watch him struggle with the order to kill his savior and to reflect upon the man he used to be and with a show this thoughtful, I’m fairly certain that’s a setup point that’s going to come into play later on. However, Ali was not the only one struggling with the decisions made by Mousa bin Suleiman. Because his wife Hanin, came to the realization in this episode that her husband’s bloodlust and desire to wage war would likely cause her family to suffer and she did everything and anything necessary to keep her children safe, going so far as to procure passports, and eventually a car to get her family the hell out of there and well, I loved this part of the story, despite its harrowing nature, simply due to the fact that this shattered all kinds of stereotypes. Too often we see terrorists and their families depicted as bloodthirsty monsters at every level and it was refreshing to see Hanin’s character cherish life over war, despite the danger it put her in. Which brings us to the part of the story that explored the spoils of war. Which was handled by way of the introduction of a new character in this tale, Victor, who just so happened to be a talented drone pilot, who was struggling with his murderous skill set, to the point where he tried his damndest to shake the demons that haunted him by gambling away every single dollar that his partner gave him after a solid kill and well, that backfired spectacularly, speaking volumes to the fact that the only way he was going to be free of his demons was to find a way to confront them and he had that opportunity in the most ironic of fashion, by saving Hanin from the men that her husband sent after her and well, it was fascinating to show how constant combat can wear down a man’s soul, and how far one good deed can heal it. If anything, this was hands down the most cerebral and poignant episode of the series to date, and I loved every single second of it. It was just cool to steer the story away from Jack and Greer for a short while to give the other characters time to shine and I love that this series is working to buck the tropes of the spy drama and give us something new and powerful and in my eyes, it’s succeeding every single step of the way. But of course, while this was a joy to watch, there are still some important plot points left unresolved in this one. After all, Hanin is on the run and Victor may not have a clue what he’s stumbled upon and of course, Ali is still a free man, but the CIA is watching, and it should be interesting to see where these plot points go, and what other poignant surprises are waiting for us down the line. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt When one thinks of autumn, several things come to mind. There’s the changing of the leaves, the crispness in the air, your favorite drinks return to your favorite coffee house and you start pulling all your jackets and long sleeve shirts to the front of your closet as you anticipate that cold that’s coming. If anything, we have it easy when it comes to autumn, but for wildlife, things are touch more urgent. For with the winter on its way, preparations must be made for animals to survive the cold and it is that sense of urgency that permeated the series finale of BBC America’s brilliant series, Yellowstone. Because ‘Autumn’ was indeed the focus of this final tale and well, we were privy to quite a hurried time in this beautiful park since animals everywhere in Yellowstone work quickly this time of year to teach their babies how to forage to build up their winter bodies so they can deal with the scarcity of food when the air hits forty below and we were also witness to how other animals prepare for the cold by hiding food in the ground itself so they have a meal ready when the snow falls and I was particularly impressed with the story of the Clark Nutcracker, a bird that hides pine nuts all over the park and is able to remember 70% of the locations where it buries its food. Yet, while many animals dig in for the long winter, others know they flat out cannot survive when four feet of snow arrives in the park and they begin a grand migration out of the park to ensure their survival and that’s really what a fair majority of this episode focused upon. Because we were able to follow pronghorns and elk on their way out of Yellowstone, and during this voyage, we came to learn that the pronghorn travel the furthest, nearly a hundred miles or more to find somewhere safe for the winter while elk, end up packing in all kinds of tasks on their journey to greener pastures since mating season is part of their migration as well. However, what made this part of the story so incredibly fascinating, is the sheer fact that once both species arrive at their respective locations, they have to share their safe space, with mankind itself. Because as man continues to stretch its legs and expand, we begin to encroach upon migration grounds that these animals have used for centuries and surprisingly, at least when it comes to the elk, we have found a way to coexist. But sadly, there’s still work to do in order to create equilibrium between mankind and the pronghorn since they tend to roam lands that are rich in natural gas and oil. But, when all is said and done, this was a perfect way to close out this magnificent story. Because everything in Yellowstone bookended perfectly, and we really were able to experience a full year when it comes to life in this park and I loved every single second of it. But alas, our journey around the world by way of ‘One Amazing Summer’ has come to an end on BBC America, for ironically, autumn has arrived in our world as well and well, I cannot thank the network enough for feeding my mind this summer by way of incredible tales of planet earth, and well, they could not have picked a more beautiful part of the world to wrap this series up with and I cannot wait to see what other majestic documentaries BBC America has waiting in the wings for us in the future. Until next time. Written by John Edward BetancourtTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...To call season four of Better Call Saul dark would in fact, be quite the understatement. Because this season has been nothing more than an outright harrowing experience, one that’s explored some of the darkest parts of the human soul as Jimmy McGill continues his downward spiral, one that will lead to the creation of Saul Goodman and when I settled in to enjoy last night’s episode of the show, ‘Coushatta’, I was quite frankly expecting more of the same. After all, things were tense between Jimmy and Kim during the last episode and I really didn’t see how their relationship was going to get better in the slightest. So, imagine my surprise, when I came to discover that this particular chapter in Jimmy’s life was going to take us down quite the different path. Because this was one fun and silly episode, for the most part, and all of the joy and wonder that we found in this episode came about by way of Jimmy and Kim’s plan to get Huell off the hook. Because the plan that was put in motion was simply magical to say the least and it was a scheme that kept you guessing, simply because the story didn’t tip its hand right away as to what exactly Kim and Jimmy were up to, making the plan seem pretty by the numbers at first. After all, Kim resorted to intimidation with the Assistant D.A. to see if she could finally get the charges dropped and once that failed miserably, the magic came into play. Because a curious opening sequence, one that saw Jimmy writing all kinds of letters while on a bus ride to Coushatta, Louisiana made sense after Kim’s failed gambit, since all of those letters were sent to the judge presiding over the case and every last one of them spoke to the wonder of Huell Babineaux and how the court was making a grave mistake in prosecuting a kind and gentle man who has done so much for the community and the giggles that came about from this reveal didn’t end there. Because the piéce de résistance when it came to this plan is the fact that Jimmy dropped some phone numbers into the letters, allowing for the Assistant D.A. to call those numbers, which of course went to some of Jimmy’s burner phones, and those calls were answered by Jimmy’s film school buddies, who worked to sell the fact that Huell was just, incredible and their testimony was backed by a website that showed Huell doing charitable work. But truly, the best moment of the night, was when Jimmy took one of the calls and just let loose with a performance for the ages, finally selling the possibility that this case was going to be a circus to prosecute, leading to a bargain between Kim and the state at last. But, all laughs aside, this little con ended up having some unexpected side effects when it comes to Kim and Jimmy’s relationship as well, since the thrill that Kim experienced in gaming the system rekindled their romance, reminding us once again that Kim does indeed have a dark side and she’s not done indulging it just yet, since she asked Jimmy for another fix and well, it should be interesting to see where that goes in the coming weeks. But for now, there’s peace in Jimmy’s world and he and Kim are the only ones enjoying it. Since the darkness in this tale came about by way of Mike and his continued struggle to keep his crew in line since they’re slipping, and it also came forth from Nacho as well, who ran into a complication in his new role as head of the business since Lalo has come calling. However, while it was cool to finally see the face of the enigmatic Lalo, and see how much Gus trusts Mike, all of their storylines were grossly overshadowed by the magic of Kim and Jimmy’s journey. Because you can never go wrong with letting Bob Odenkirk’s comedic skills shine through and well, this really was a welcome change pace for the show. It was simply a laugh a minute when it came to this wild and crazy plan and while I enjoyed the fun times, this kind of joy makes me a touch nervous. Because I get the funny feeling, the goofiness here was designed to not only give us a break from one tough season of storytelling, but to give us a little bit of joy before things truly get bleak and I fear it won’t be long before Jimmy’s dark side returns as we close in on the season four finale. Until next time. Written by John Edward BetancourtI have to admit, that the more time I’ve had to think about the series premiere of Yellowstone on BBC America, the more I’m coming to appreciate this particular documentary for one reason and one reason alone; it doesn’t pull any punches. Because the harsh winter that the last episode of this series helped us explore was truly a harrowing and sobering tale that really spoke to the resiliency of the wildlife in that area and it was my hope that the next episode in this fascinating tale was going to keep that tradition going and let me tell you now, ‘Summer’ certainly did not disappoint. Because as it turns out, even summers in this beautiful place are hard on wildlife, but not for reasons that one would expect. After all, it would make sense for brutal heat to punish the animals that live here, but ironically, heat, or the lack thereof in this case, is precisely why summer is a tough time in this place. Because summer in Yellowstone really doesn’t start for quite some time, thanks in large part to the elevation of the park, since being that high up means the cold sticks around longer than most of us are used to, which means there’s still snow on the ground when most of the animals that migrated away during the winter return to their usual stomping grounds. But, the good news is, once that snow is gone, it’s nothing but sheer beauty and vibrancy in Yellowstone, and the food is plentiful for every single animal in the park. There are green pastures to feed the mighty bison and plenty of fish in the water for bears and even otters to feast upon and we even learned that a rare hummingbird makes its way up from Mexico to enjoy the wondrous bounty of flowers that grow during this season. However, despite the fact that it’s June in this magical place, snow can still fall in great amounts since a minor disappearance from the sun can allow for cold air to pour down the mountains and into the basin that is the park and it was extremely wild to watch a blizzard come down in a month where most of us park ourselves in front of an air conditioner. Yet, the bounty and beauty of summertime doesn’t last for long. For once late summer arrives, the heat finally becomes a factor as the grass begins to dry out, and of course, wildfires become a risk as well for wildlife since those blazes not only ravage shelter for animals, but ruin their food supply as well, likely costing many animals their lives once winter returns. And speaking of the impending cold that is on its way, many a creature begins preparing for the winter in August, like the bears that roam the park, who climb high into the mountains to find moths that are rich in calories so they can begin to build their hibernation bodies before the snow begins to fall. If anything, this was quite the fascinating look into a different kind of summer. Because in our world, it’s hikes and barbecues and everything in between and we admire the beauty of the season for quite some time before we have to worry about any snow. But up in Yellowstone, it’s a race against time to be ready before the punishing winter returns again and it was just incredible to see all of these animals work quickly to raise their young and prepare them for the cold to come and well, it’s a shame that there’s only one episode left in this magnificent series, but alas, there’s only one more season to explore, the fall, and that’s where we are headed in next week’s series finale and I cannot wait to learn more about how life here truly races to a wintery finish line to survive that brutal season. Until next time. Written by John Edward BetancourtTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...You know, every single time I settle in to watch a new television series, I find that my anticipation levels are through the roof when it comes to watching the second episode simply because there’s an air of the unknown surrounding said series at this point. After all, pilot episodes tend to be filmed well in advance of everything else, giving the folks behind the scenes time to tweak a few things and because of that, I’ve watched second episodes that are vastly different than the pilot and I was wondering if I was going to get something seamless or something focused on reinvention when I settled in to watch the next episode of Jack Ryan. As it turns out, ‘French Connection’, was going to stay true in tone and design to everything that was established in the pilot episode since all of the elements that I enjoyed in that particular tale were present here, allowing for me to be sucked right back into Jack’s world and what made this next entry in his story so incredibly fascinating, is the sheer fact that despite some thrilling action and adventure sequences, this second episode actually took the time to slow things down significantly and help us to get to know our characters on a more fundamental level, which sent me over the moon with joy since character development is one of my favorite things to see on television. If anything, this particular approach storytelling wise really helped to solidify Jack’s standing as a noble boy scout since we saw him stand by Jim Greer when Nathan Singer tried his best to get Jack to turn on the man with the promise of career advancement and we even saw him open up and be a touch more vulnerable in this tale since he was clearly nervous when asking out Cathy Mueller on a date and I get the feeling that all of this was explored in detail to help us root for Jack in just about every situation and also because I get the feeling that at some point, his moral code is going to be to put to the test and we are going to be pulling for him to stay true to it since we’ve seen nothing but kindness and nobility from the man. Yet, Jack wasn’t the only character put on full display in this episode, Suleiman was also a big focus of this tale since we had the opportunity to see what kind of a man he is as well since he returned home in this story to his wife and children and well, this was simply a fascinating twist to throw into the mix. Because men like him, are always portrayed as monsters in stories such as this, allowing for us to forget that bad men and women are human beings after all, they simply make some incredibly different and ugly choices in life, the kind that hurt people and while it was interesting to see him be a father and be good to his family, the show was quick to remind us of the fact that there’s a real dark side to him and the anger and fury that surges in his veins is closer to being unleashed upon the world and that’s bad news for his family since it doesn’t matter to him who gets hurt in the process. But as a I mentioned before, there was some action and adventure to be found in this episode as well and it’s important we take a moment to highlight that. Because Jack was able to crack the code on Suleiman’s phone and uncover exactly how he was getting his funding and the clues led him and Greer to Paris, France to hunt down our villain’s brother and well, this was a heart pounding sequence to say the least. Because it quickly reminded us as to how ruthless Suleiman’s organization really is and how dangerous this hunt is going to be, and well, this episode was simply spectacular. It was the perfect mix of story and action and I’m so glad the Writer’s Room took the time to explore who these characters are as people because that really does add a beautiful depth to this tale. But, all beauty aside, Ali Suleiman is on the loose, and there’s no doubt in my mind that the next episode is going to feature one incredible manhunt… Written by John Edward BetancourtTHIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...When it comes to spy dramas, I think we can all agree that there are few spies as iconic as James Bond. Because 007 has been around for over a century and his adventures in both print and cinema have made him an outright household name. But, while this British spy is one of the most celebrated in pop culture, I think we often forget about America’s most famous spy, the one and only Jack Ryan, and I fully understand why he’s not as popular as Mister Bond, because his career and stories have turned out to be so incredibly different. After all, Bond is debonair and dashing and always gets the girl amidst a thrilling and incredible mission, whereas Jack is merely an analyst who is about as American as apple pie. He believes in always doing the right thing and following procedure and I get it, that’s boring in some ways, and the up and down nature of the books he hails from and the motion picture franchise he once enjoyed has hurt his chances of putting him on the same level as his international counterpart, but that hasn’t stopped Hollywood from trying to reinvent a character that is filled to the brim with so much potential. Because in a world full of gritty stories and dark sequels, film and television could use and do wonders with a character that features a positive outlook and boy scout mentality and well, the time has come once again to try and reinvent this character by putting an end to his cinematic adventures by instead moving him to the small screen since Amazon recently released Jack Ryan, a show that takes us to the beginning of his titular career and recently I had the chance to finally settle in and watch the ‘Pilot’ episode of this brand new journey and well, I’m glad I did because it’s clear now that Jack’s future on the small screen looks far more promising than it does on the big screen. I say that, simply due to the fact that this inaugural episode is downright delightful to watch. In large part due to the fact that it doesn’t insult the audience with a grandiose origin story, we instead meet Jack in the middle of his analyst work at the Central Intelligence Agency and he’s already onto something big and it doesn’t take long for us to be thrust into a grand adventure around the world to hunt a mysterious man named Suleiman who is gathering money for something nefarious and while the story does a fine job of setting up a massive and sprawling plot in this first episode, it’s the characters that sell the story. Because Jack really is as good as advertised, and he is truly focused on doing the right thing in just about every single situation, to the point where his kindness helps reveal the true identity of his foe and it’s just refreshing to see a hero that and focuses on honor and integrity instead of his demons and his flaws and Jack is counter balanced nicely by Suleiman, since this particular villain is about as ruthless as they come and his band of baddies are willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish their mission and it should be interesting to see how the cat and mouse game begins to shape up between Jack and Suleiman as the story progresses. But, when all is said and done, there’s some serious potential here for this first season of the show to become the next great American spy drama since it features an engrossing story and some lovely characters, and I was blown away by the quality production values and quite frankly, the acting, because everyone in this story is just a delight to watch and shout out to John Krasinski who plays Jack, since his performance here was lights out and I get the feeling this series is going to let him shine as an actor as it continues along and well, I’m excited. There’s something special brewing with this particular series, and I really cannot wait to watch this story unfold, so on that note, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time to hit play on my Prime App and see what comes next for Jack Ryan as he begins to unravel Suleiman’s evil plans. Until next time. Written by John Edward BetancourtBoy, what a wonderful time it is to be a Doctor Who fan right now. But of the many things on that list, one that ranks highly for me is the ability for a series to continue to surprise its audience and keep us guessing. Because in doing so, it means the show is taking risks with its storylines in a world where formula and the least path of resistance are king, and if there’s one show that still continues to find ways to take risks and surprise me every single step of the way, it’s Better Call Saul. Because this series consistently leaves my jaw on the floor with plot twists that I don’t see coming and last night’s episode of the show, ‘Something Stupid’, is one that stunned me once again by sending quite a few unexpected surprises my way. Case in point, the fact that it performed a time jump for our characters right before our eyes, which was…genius in its own right. After all, most shows wait until a season finale to advance the plot forward in time, but here we were, watching time fly by for both Jimmy and Kim, allowing for Jimmy’s probation to come to a close and we also able to bear witness to the unthinkable in the process…by watching this dynamic couple begin to grow apart. Yet what made this opening sequence so brilliant, is that it was able to show these two moving in separate directions without an ounce of exposition or heavy dialogue. We simply saw Kim fulfilling some life-long dreams as she enjoyed great success in her new role at Schweikart and Cokely all while helping people as a pro bono public defender, while Jimmy…stayed Jimmy. He sold his burner phones with Huell, screwed around at work and in essence stayed in a rut and it was both fascinating and heartbreaking to watch these two lovebirds grow apart over the course of roughly a year and come to realize that this divide was going to cause trouble for them down the line, and boy…did it ever. Because Jimmy struggled with Kim’s success, whether he wanted to acknowledge it or not. She was the hot shot lawyer now that she always said she was going to become, and her fancy office and accolades no doubt reminded him of Chuck, and what he thought of Jimmy and all those insecurities about his career coming to a screeching halt seemed to bubble to the surface at a company gathering he was invited to and it allowed for Jimmy to unleash his inner jerk and humiliate Kim’s boss in the most creative of ways, by in essence putting Richard on the spot in front of his employees and while it seemed like nothing more than harmless spit balling, it was obvious to Kim and Richard that Jimmy was out of line and insulting Richard with zest and zeal. Yet while that may not seem that shocking and par for the course for a man still struggling with some demons, have no fear, Jimmy made sure to up his game in this episode. Because his side gig, which we learned was all part of his plan to return to practicing law, blew up in his face in this tale, since the law got involved after Albuquerque P.D. came to discover that a ‘Saul Goodman’ was selling burner phones to criminals, and a heated confrontation between Jimmy and a plainclothes detective ended in disaster when Huell took the wrong kind of initiative and knocked the officer down with a bag of sandwiches and quickly found himself facing some serious charges from the District Attorney’s office. Which of course, put that sparkle in Jimmy’s eyes, because this posed a challenge, one he believed he could overcome. But it would take some serious effort for him to jump that hurdle without a law license and he sought out Kim’s help instead, offering up one sneaky and deceitful plan to get Huell off the hook, something that Kim wanted no part of. She wanted to do this with honesty and integrity, and unfortunately for her, the straight arrow path, revealed some unfortunate truths about her darling Jimmy, in that he is already viewed as a scumbag and a failure and well, knowing full well that without her help Jimmy will do something rash, Kim agrees to step in and act and that’s where this tale leaves us, with Kim doing Jimmy a solid once again and with this duo facing an uncertain future… If anything, this episode felt prophetic and really, that was part of its magic. Because we know full well that at some point this couple will part ways since Saul works alone and this appeared to be the genesis of that and kudos to the show for showing us a relationship on the brink since few shows go there and for reminding us that Kim really does love Jimmy since she’s willing to put her neck on the line for him once again. But no good can come of this latest bail out from Kim, and considering how the Breaking Bad timeline draws closer now more than ever thanks to Mike and Gus’ journeys, the strain and this case, could be the last straw for Kim. Either way, this episode was brilliant to say the least, and I love how it kept me on my toes and that it showed us how Jimmy is slowly letting his pain and anger take over as he draws ever closer to his transformation into Saul. Until next time. Written by John Edward BetancourtIt’s rare when an advertising campaign truly lives up to the hype, but BBC America’s One Amazing Summer has done just that thanks to the magnificent documentaries about our world that the network has put on display for all of us. But alas, all good things must come to an end, and with September upon us, summer is quickly coming to a close. But, that won’t stop this network from fitting in one last documentary for all of us to enjoy before the temperature cools and the leaves change and as it turns out, the network picked the perfect place to bid farewell to summer and prepare all of us for the forthcoming cold by taking us into the heart of an American paradise in Yellowstone. Yes, this incredible National Park, one that boasts all kinds of wildlife and beauty will be our proverbial home away from home on television for the next three weeks as we explore this unique part of the North American wilderness and well, it didn’t take long for me to find myself utterly fascinated by this story since it was inherently clear early on, that this is going to be a different kind of documentary about the park, since this series is going to focus heavily on life within the park, and take us on a journey alongside the incredible wildlife that lives here and I also made mention of the fact that it is preparing us for the cold season to come and it accomplished that, by focusing this opening chapter on ‘Winter’. If anything, focusing on a season, and how life functions during said season ended up being a magnificent way to kick off this series for several reasons. For starters, it provided us with some downright breathtaking visuals. Because truly, Yellowstone is transformed into a work of living art once the snow begins to fall, with fields, and rivers and lakes that glimmer and shine in both day and night thanks to the massive amounts of snow that cover all of those things in the dead of winter and kudos to the network for capturing images that instantly draw you into a harrowing story of survival wherein life actually does find a way to thrive in the midst of winters that can get to 40 degrees below centigrade and Fahrenheit and that’s just downright incredible to say the least. Which brings us to the best part of the documentary, the learning. Because by taking us into the daily lives of the Druid Wolf Pack, and the Bison that roam free in this wonderland, the facts were able to wash over us, like how exactly the winters get so cold here, which is related to the fact that all the volcanic activity beneath the park has raised it higher and higher, allowing for that cold air to settle gently into the basin that Yellowstone resides within and more importantly, we came to learn how life survives these brutal winters. In fact, I didn’t know that Otters were a staple of this part of the world, but they are and like every animal present in Yellowstone, they know exactly where to go to find warmth and food, courtesy of the geothermic activity that doesn’t answer to extreme temperatures. A day after watching this one however, it’s the sheer beauty that I was privy to in this tale that still echoes in my mind because my goodness, there are so many incredible sights to see in this place and the hauntingly beautiful images present in this particular tale, have me hungry for more. Especially now that I am armed with the knowledge that summer is up next on the agenda for this documentary and well, once again, BBC America has hit it out of the park when it comes to stories about our world. Because Yellowstone’s premiere was stunning to say the least and thanks to this breathtaking premiere, I’ll be anxiously awaiting next week’s episode to learn more about this beautiful place and the majestic creatures that roam it. Until next time. |
