It is definitely safe to say, that season three of The Boys on Prime Video, has been the show’s darkest season to date… and that is quite the accomplishment. After all, season one’s introduction of this wild world where supes fly free, featured some dark and sobering and outright gross moments and season two… well it featured a grand battle royale with a freakin’ Nazi superhero. But come rain or come shine, this show is eager to continue to push the envelope, and it is accomplishing that particular goal this season by allowing for Homelander to simply embrace his darkest demons and put them on display, to the point where carnage is everywhere, and the good guys are losing themselves in the fight. In fact, our heroes are so broken and rattled by what they’re seeing and dealing with, they’re stooping to new lows and indulging themselves in powers to ‘level the playing field’, when in fact… they’re compromising their morals and their mission. If anything, this season has been so incredibly bleak, that one has to wonder if year three can in fact get any darker and well… wouldn’t you know it? It most certainly can. As evidenced by how this week’s tale played out. For ‘The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies’ is an episode that was filled to the brim with some ugly moments. The kind that saw Homelander continue to tighten his grip, alongside a sequence that featured some powerful commentary on our world… and we were also privy to more of Butcher and Hughie’s downward spiral. But before we get to the last item on that list, let’s talk about that commentary and Homelander’s actions… because the latter is losing his mind at this point and truly indulging in every desire to consolidate his power. Even going so far as to black bag Maeve for sleeping with Butcher since he saw that as a sign, she was coming to get him and figured he could nip that in the bud now. Plus, he is steadily enabling other piece of trash supes. Since Blue Hawk’s ‘attempt’ at an apology to the African American community where he patrols, revealed his true racist colors when he went on a tirade and rampage when that very apology was rightfully rejected by the community, and wow… did that whole mess speak volumes to the problems we’re facing in America right now, and how garbage individuals like Blue Hawk, are discovering newfound confidence when it comes to spreading hate.
All of that aside however, both of those storylines really it made it clear that things are starting to spiral out of control with the supes and that’s scary to say the least and that uncomfortable reality… is what motivated Butcher and Hughie to do more stupid things. Such as lie to MM. Because they tried to convince him that they wanted nothing more than to bring down Soldier Boy, who had returned to America, and used his extensive knowledge to meet the man known as The Legend. Whom as it turned out, loved sex and cocaine, and forced the Boys to learn about that love and his conquests throughout the years as the door price for information on Soldier Boy's potential whereabouts. And once they got through his hilarious and wacky stories, they finally came to learn that Soldier Boy was likely headed to reunite with Crimson Countess.
Which gave the Boys a chance to get out there to her place, and secure the Countess before Solider Boy’s arrival and use her to get to him… but alas, that’s when things took another dark turn. Since MM was immobilized by Butcher and Hughie led away Starfire, who came down to help. All because Butcher and Hughie knew they needed Soldier Boy to help them bring down Homelander and what better way to build that alliance, than with an honest little chat revolving around a partnership and by surrendering up an old love. All so that Soldier Boy could get some answers about his horrific time in Russia and well… as it turned out, the Crimson Countess sold him out and paid the price in doing so… as did Butcher and Hughie. Since they’re now, all in on working with a broken hero that is out for revenge. A move that will undoubtedly shatter more relationships, including Hughie and Starfire’s and well, that is indeed one hell of a way to end this episode. One that was truly hopeless and devastating in nature. To the point where even the bright spots are almost overshadowed by the darkness present in this tale. But thankfully, the Legend’s outright hilarious stories about drugs and sex, and Kimiko’s musical number in her mind… and Seth Rogan’s wild and lotion heavy cameo, did offer up necessary levity… and we should enjoy it while it lasts. Because this season is all about revenge and it is likely only going to get uglier from here. Courtesy of a potentially unholy pact between the Boys and Solider Boy, and a boatload of Compound V-24. Until next time.
