Undoubtedly, one of the hardest lessons that police officers have to learn… is to remain impartial in everything they do, and it makes sense as to why that would be so tough to absorb. For police officers are human beings and the horrible things they see in the line of duty, impact them emotionally and evoke a response, and having to hold those emotions back and just handle the moment as it comes… while fear or anger is surging… cannot be easy in the slightest. Not to mention, sometimes that response is personal in nature and that could potentially bring about big-time trouble if the circumstances are just right. But impartiality is an expectation of the job and these intrepid officers do have to figure out how to juggle both and really, that particular lesson is top of mind, simply because Detective Constable Billie Fitzgerald was forced to reckon with it in the next episode of London Kills. For the death of a locksmith in ‘Blood’, made Billie suspicious. In that, she genuinely believed that she knew the deceased in some capacity and well… it turned out that she was right. For he was involved in the death of her father years ago and well, just like that… this case became personal for Billie, and she was forced to learn on the fly about objectivity and that was no easy task when all is said and done. Largely because, all signs pointed to the man that was put away for killing her dad… who was of course, back on the street… as the man responsible for this murder. At least… in her mind. Because despite her best efforts to prove that was the case, the alibi, and the suspect, painted a picture of a reformed man. One that really was penitent for his actions. But Billie just couldn’t let that hunch lie and she kept digging, and thankfully so did the team, and minute by minute… lies were exposed and truths were revealed. The kind that eventually revealed that Billie’s hunches were correct and taught her the power of objectivity. Because had she let her darker demons and need for revenge take hold, the man responsible for so much pain in her life, never would have gone back to prison to spend the rest of his life there for murder. But she did the right thing in the end and walked away a more balanced officer for certain, one that finally had closure. However, while it was wonderful to see Billie learn that lesson and grow and find peace in the process… we would be remiss to not point out that the case revolving around Grace Harper also took on new life in this tale. Because Vivienne took the time to go out to dinner with the Chief Superintendent and work to get him to admit to being in trouble with the wrong people and well… that didn’t go well. In part because he was reticent to name names and also because… he and Vivienne were spotted by the dirty cops while out together. Raising the stakes and putting both of their lives in jeopardy, since dark forces now know that their top stooge is talking and no good can come from that. But all of that aside, this was still a great episode through and through, one that was part mystery and part character study and having that combination present here was a real treat. Since it was engaging in every sense of the word and who doesn’t like character growth? Not to mention, you cannot go wrong with the fact that this series keeps finding ways to advance that darker plot in dynamic ways since that surprise spotting really does leave the viewer worried and downright eager to continue the journey. To see in part, what other brilliant stories, filled with humanity await us, but to also see how the unit rallies around Vivienne… now that this corruption case is about to be taken to the Nth degree. Until next time.
