October is certainly an exciting time for pop culture fans. In part, because there’s plenty to watch thanks to the fact that the air is getting colder, and we’d rather be indoors with a warm drink and good show or movie on our screens, and networks know that and plan accordingly. But also, there’s a lot of spooky programming on the airwaves this time of year. For this is Halloween’s big month, and everyone looks forward to taking in a few spooky stories now and again, or several… depending upon what you like and well… it just so happens that STARZ has quite the programming mix prepared for us the coming weeks. For they recently released their October programming lineup, and it is quite robust and delightful. For it features something for everyone really. The only problem? It may be haunted. Once settled in, Pat encountered Rosemary, a demon who possessed her body and turned her life upside down. When the family steps in to “save” Pat, they commit her to a psychiatric hospital where she sees an old photo of a nurse who looks just like her demon Rosemary. Season two kicks off four months later, when Pat’s insurance runs out and she is released from the psychiatric hospital early. Pat returns home, determined to pick up the pieces of her broken family, but she quickly finds out her children don’t need her, Terry doesn’t remember her and to make matters worse, Pat’s new neighbor Ruth looks exactly like Rosemary. Meanwhile, the house starts to reveal the shocking secrets of its dark past. Every mother feels like they live in an insane asylum, but Pat may be right!

But with CBI split down the middle, Tommy and Diamond first must maintain their edge over Jenard. As their factions feud in the streets, Tommy capitalizes on another rivalry between the Serbs and Miguel Garcia, the most formidable drug lord in Chicago. After setting off a chain reaction of violence in pursuit of his ambition, Tommy must race to stay ahead of the men who are coming for what’s theirs, a federal task force that’s closing ranks, and a sadistic supplier with a direct line to the Cartel. All the while torn by the promise of a second chance with his blood family, Tommy must decide what he is willing to sacrifice to finally ascend the throne of a kingpin.

One fascinating storytelling aspect of the Power Universe that we’ve talked about at length in our various recaps of shows from across the franchise, is how it explores solutions to problems that none of us will ever understand. Like how one would handle and manage grief in a world where there is no time to do so. Since the game doesn’t allow for emotions, it just requires you to get more of that paper. Plus, the Universe has explored how success is dangerous as well in the world of the game, which isn’t the case in our world. But of the many possible outcomes and explorations its toyed with regarding the game, where the Power Universe shines, is in its explorations of how family life and interpersonal relationships are deeply impacted by the game. Because unlike our world, there is no family therapy to work with, or amicable discussions to find resolution and hope when there are family problems. There are just tough decisions in this world, the kind that force people to either do things they don’t want to in order to either protect their family and keep them safe, or handle family disputes, and never was that more evident than during this week’s episode of Power Book IV: Force on STARZ. For ‘Crown Vic’ saw the three royal families of Sampson, Flynn and Egan, deal with major problems from a family perspective, the kind that somewhat resembled our world, and of course, explore how drug dealers would handle them in a world without rules and believe it or not… there are some positive outcomes to dealing with major problems in the game. Take what happened with Diamond and Jenard for instance, because their journey was full of positive surprises. After all, they are estranged at this point, and living different lives in different worlds. But the news that a man named Sid was ill, changed that. Because Sid happened to be their father, and he was in fact, on his death bed. Which forced Diamond and Jenard to see their old man, and it was no cuddly reunion. For Sid was HARD on his boys and beat them down emotionally, to the point where they didn’t even know he was ill until word got out on the street. But the need to pay final respects, allowed for the brothers Sampson to finally come to realize that their beef was stupid, and that greed wasn’t part of the CBI way, especially when it came to family, and they made peace. A move that reminded us… that family is always bigger than any problem, and we only get one, and if by chance we can make peace with them when we fight, all the better, and it was good to know that even in the game, the life… that too can happen. As for Tommy and his family, well… their biggest problem was the fact that D-Mac was radioactive at this point, and unwilling to listen to his father or his uncle about how to handle the current situation. Since he went out into the world, running his mouth about his worries, despite being told to stay home and lay low, and that prompted him… to think about ways to feel good, to feel happy. Since he was miserable and well… that motivated him to see that girl, and he had Kate’s support in that as well. Which in turn, prompted Uncle Tommy to go to extremes and have D-Mac pulled off the streets. A move that made it seem as though this plot thread was dark in nature and that D-Mac was doomed. But instead, Tommy sent him far away to live at an academy, until things cooled off. Letting us know that in this world, when family is in trouble, there are ways to protect them, and while they might be extreme, they can work, if there is an ounce of worth in the person that makes the call to save their family.
All of which served to remind us that Tommy isn’t pure evil, just a man that is misguided and on one ugly path that he cannot escape. But he can do a little good in this life, and well, it was nice to know that there can be moments of wonder and hope in the game and that family and people can look beyond the darkness and find the light. But those two plot threads were the only joyous ones to find in this tale. Because the Flynn family, dealt with the ugly stuff in this tale. For their journey informed us that in the game, there is no therapy, and no efforts to purge a toxic family member from one’s life, when their toxicity becomes dangerous. No there’s only the brutal violent response, the kind that makes sure there will be freedom forever and well… that meant that the dark day that Vic and Claudia have been hinting at, arrived in this tale.
For they were in fact, ready to kill their father and with Doyle’s help, a plan was set in motion. One that would allow for Vic to distract his father with a nice dinner, before leaving so he could die. But of course… that simple plan went to hell. Because Claudia came to learn that she wouldn’t be in charge after Da died, it would be Vic. So, she tried to kill two birds with one stone, by not telling Vic the timetable moved up for the assassination. Which forced Vic to fight alongside his father, and Paulie, who was back in good graces long enough… to join the fight against a man he staunchly admired. Which brought forth the end of Paulie and the end of Walter Flynn… and the end of the Flynn empire as well. Because despite Claudia’s best efforts to make it seem as though Doyle betrayed Vic, he knew. He knew exactly what happened and that’s why… he turned to the cops to finish what he started. However, what mattered more here, is that this segment informed us… that sometimes… handling family matters in the game can be bloody and devastating and as ugly as it gets. Because the game has no rules, it’s all about survival, and Vic is working to do just that, cost be damned. After all, he’s ready to bring down Tommy if it means he can finally heal. And well, this was simply a stunning sequence for certain. Because normally in this Universe, this saga, characters as big as Walter Flynn… don’t just fade into the night. They fight to the bitter end. But this is a new era for the franchise, and clearly… few are safe in this story, and it will be fascinating to see who else falls the wayside with this power vacuum now in place in Chicago, since the Flynn Empire is done and out of the game. In the end, this was simply one amazing episode. One that really did offer up some genuine humanity in a genre that tends to forget about it often, and it let the better angels of Tommy and Diamond shine like never before, while reminding us… how dark the game can be and how far people will go to be at the top. Also, while finding new ways to shock us. Because… Walter’s death really was quite the stunner, and it really does change the dynamic of the story in bold news ways. In part because, we now haven’t a clue what lies ahead from a villain standpoint, since Walter was the heavy for so long and we all thought a fight back on his part was the endgame. But also, because this really does give Tommy quite the in to achieve his goals, way ahead of schedule, and it will be interesting to see what lies ahead for Tommy’s growing empire as this incredible story continues to unfold and surprise us. Until next time. Watch ‘Power Book IV: Force’

Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Two of ‘The Continental: From the World of John Wick’. To revisit the Series Premiere, clickhere. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
There are a great many reasons that people love the John Wick Universe. For instance, so many enjoy the amazing action sequences that this story brings to the table. For they are intricate, breathtaking and in many ways… artful in nature. As for others, well they simply enjoy the rich universe this franchise has brought to life. For there is something genuinely fascinating and powerful about a world that features two civilizations, one that operates under the laws we know, while the other operates under a different set of more violent rules, right alongside us. But of the many reasons that people take part in watching a story set in this fascinating world, there is one above all that matters most. In that, what we truly tune in for, are the characters. Simply because everyone in this alternate world, are dynamic beings. Filled with unique stories and histories that have brought them to this grey area where the High Table operates, and these stories make sure to take the time to showcase those stories. In a manner that hammers home, that despite living in world of assassins, these are supremely human characters that feel and struggle emotionally like the rest of us. If anything, that particular aspect of this universe is top of mind today, because it served as the focus of the next episode of The Continental: From the World of John Wick on Peacock. For ‘Loyalty to the Master’ picked up shortly after the battle on the rooftop, and the reveal that the coin press was still lost to the world, and well… that gave everyone a chance to just breathe and ponder upon their journey. Which in turn, allowed for us to learn so much about the characters. To the point where we now know that Winston and his late brother Francis, were tormented in many ways by Cormac. To the point where dear Winston harbored a lot of traumas over this, and that likely was helping to drive his plan. One we will get to in a moment. Because this quiet time also helped us to come to understand why it was so important to Lou that she and Miles be taken seriously, because of her past and the disrespect her family endured. Not to mention, we also came to learn why Yen was so stunningly angry and shattered over Francis’ passing. All because she really believed that fate brought them together and that their love gave her salvation, and that made him, everything to her.
Plus, we even came to learn more about Charon, and how his father helped bring to him America, and that he even had an admirer within the walls of the Continental. And oddly, it is Charon’s story that brought forth… the keystone aspect of this tale. Because while it was nice to learn so much about so many, we are here for a juicy revenge plot, and Winston did set that in motion here. By attempting to raise a grand army in this town. All by leaning into the city’s general dislike of Cormac, and how few wanted him in charge of the Continental anymore. Which garnered Winston, some allies. Not enough mind you since that meant assassins and thieves and other ne’er do wells had to choose a side, and that sounded awful. But Winston felt it was enough and once he had the army he desired; he went after what he needed the most… an inside man.
Because someone had to help him, and his team get inside The Continental and surprise Cormac quickly and well… that is where Charon came into play. Because despite being loyal and being a fine worker for Cormac… he wasn’t really being rewarded. For he still lived a life that spoke to a man that wasn’t valued, and Cormac’s promises to bring dear old dad to New York City went unfulfilled, and Winston knew this and made a point to ask Charon, if by chance… he would be willing to be the inside man and be rewarded. Of course, that answer we did not receive in this tale, nor could we infer. Because despite murdering that musician on hotel grounds, to inform Charon that loyalty matters above all, Charon informed Cormac of the plan and seemingly stood by his beleaguered boss. Whom really did face all kinds of pressure in this tale, courtesy of the Adjudicator and the High Table. Which means, the finale will be the one to inform us if Charon stands with Winston in this moment, or if their alliance came about in a different manner. Because in the end, they do work together, and Winston is of course… in charge. But while we wait to see how the future begins to assemble in this story, we can celebrate one delightful episode. One that truly gave us everything we know and love about this franchise. Since once again, we were treated to amazing action sequences that took our breath away, and more information regarding how this world works. But above all, we learned much about some of the most important characters in this story, and that will add depth to our next viewing of the tetralogy. But now that the learning is done… the time has come to turn our attention to the finale of this miniseries. Wherein Winston Scott’s fate will be carved in stone at last. Until next time. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 405 of ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’. To revisit the previous episode, click here. Also, this piece was written during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
One particular aspect of the Star Trek Universe that is quite lovely, is the sheer fact that new shows in the franchise always finds ways to pay homage to the shows of the past. Something that is sometimes achieved by way of epic crossovers, which The Next Generation pulled off on several occasions with the cast of The Original Series. Or there are outright sequels to stories told elsewhere, akin to what Star Trek: Discovery did with ‘Unification III’. But what the franchise stayed away from for the longest time, was offering criticism of the storytelling mistakes the franchise sometimes has made. But the arrival of Star Trek: Lower Decks, on Paramount+, changed all that. For nothing was off limits from a satire perspective from this show, and it has indeed poked fun at some of the franchise’s more dubious moments and inspired others to go after other mistakes. After all, Terry Matalas and the writing team of Star Trek: Picard, fixed many of the wrongs that were imparted upon the crew of the Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E. But what’s amazing about this new twist to the connective tissue of the franchise, is that Lower Decks is showing no signs of slowing down regarding its satire of those goofier moments, as evidenced by this week’s episode. For ‘Empathalogical Fallacies’ was a story that had no qualms poking fun of the ‘The Naked Time’ and ‘The Naked Now’, while also pointing out how some of the Lwaxana Troi related stories from TNG were a tad over the top. A feat that it accomplished by accelerating concerns regarding the mystery ship that has been blasting starships out of the cosmos over the past few weeks. Because there was concern at Starfleet that such attacks could serve as an opening salvo to something greater… so special orders were put into play. For instance, ships that were conducting diplomatic missions had to observe communication blackout protocols to keep the diplomats safe and well, those orders brought cut off the crew from quickly solving some wild times aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos. For they were escorting three ambassadors from Betazed and well, their desire to party and keep everything loose, seemingly inspired trouble. Because just like that, the crew was releasing their inhibitions, a la those aforementioned episodes, and that led to some hilarious moments all over the ship. The kind that saw crewmembers just give into temptation and silliness and well… that was the perfect way to pay homage and satirize those episodes, since some of those moments were over-the-top and reminded us of how silly those episodes were in the first place, and the homages and satire didn’t end there. Because those ambassadors were in many ways, Lwaxana Troi at her worst since their actions here, leaned into the more obnoxious aspects that Lwaxana put on display back in the TNG days, and this spoke to how unnecessary that was from a storytelling perspective.
But all of that satire was handled in a classy manner, and truly pointed out correctable flaws in both plot points that could have given them gravity and longevity. But while that would have been enough Trek lore to satisfy us… it still had more homages to send our way. Courtesy of Lieutenant T’Lyn. Who as it turned out, was responsible for the wild nature of the crew’s actions because of her own concerns regarding her future in the Vulcan fleet. For she felt inadequate and abandoned with her Starfleet assignment, and much like Sarek did in his TNG run, she was able to project emotion out into the world and bring about havoc. But thanks to Mariner, she was able to find control and came to understand that she needed to work on herself before returning to the Vulcan fleet. And well… that’s precisely where this episode bid farewell to the homages and the satire of Trek gone by and thrust the crew of the Cerritos into the thick of this plot involving that super-powered mystery vessel.
For it turned out, that the Betazed delegation was acting silly and loopy to maintain cover. For they were the Betazed equivalent of Starfleet Intelligence and were working to learn more about that ship to protect their people from its reach and well, with the captain poking into their business, they felt they needed to blow their cover and go for broke in getting back home. Which meant commandeering the ship, a move that proved to be… a poor choice. Because while the majority of the crew was letting inhibition take control, Boims was hanging out with the security teams, to learn about what they do during downtime. Which is focus on their mental health and the mental health of the crew. That is until Red Alert sounds. Then it’s all karate chops and kicks set to stun, and thanks to their Zen and their preparedness, they retook the ship and saved it from sneaking into the Romulan Neutral Zone. Giving rise to a happy ending for all, and more intelligence on the ship in question. A surprise that might make the Cerritos the point vessel on this matter since they have the most information. But before we ponder too deeply upon that, we can in fact, celebrate one fun and intelligent tale. One that really did offer up constructive criticism of some of the franchise’s weaker moments in a manner that was respectful, and silly enough to keep us laughing, and it is just nice to know that this show will continue to both highlight and scrutinize dubious moments while celebrating the best parts of the franchise, and now that we’ve reached the end of this delightful tale, we can indeed ponder upon that mystery ship and ask all kinds of questions. Such as who is behind these attacks? And why? Is it a new species to be revealed? Or are the Moopsy taking revenge over the fact that their leader is still locked up in the Menage? Time will tell of course, and it will be fascinating to see this concerning plot thread expand as season four of this brilliant series continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’

There was a time where nostalgia was a word that brought forth a sour vibe. One that deeply related to someone that was for lack of a better phrase, stuck in the past. As though all they could hold onto and celebrate was yesterday and well, that was and remains a silly view. Because there is nothing wrong with enjoying what made us happy in the past nor is there anything wrong with celebrating pop culture moments that are iconic, and it is a wonderful thing that such judgment is no longer prominent. Since it is allowing for those celebrations of yesterday to pop up often now and put a smile on our faces, and it is so engrained now in our culture… that it even helps to launch new chapters and stories in the pop culture landscape.
Take for instance, the recent announcement trailer that WOW Presents Plus brought forth onto the internet. For Symone and Gigi Goode, the winners of Season 13 and Season 12 of RuPaul’s Grace, respectively, along with the crew of The House of Avalon, looked to nostalgia to announce the arrival of AVALON TV (Which premieres October 9, 2023 exclusively on WOW Presents Plus with a new episode airing every Monday). By paying tribute to the Spice Girls and the cult classic Spice World, and that was quite the epic way to let us know that this show is going to be, per WOW Presents Plus, “an off-the-wall, over-the-top, and under-the-wig series that takes you inside the brains of LA’s hottest creative collective, The House Of Avalon. Whether it’s fashion, nightlife, drag, art, comedy, or media – this chosen family is creating one iconic pop culture moment after another, and skyrocketing to success by their own set of rules.” Courtesy of segments that are part sketch-comedy, part follow style documentary. Since we will follow Symone as she attends her first Met Gala, and we will even follow Gigi through her transition. Not to mention there will be a talk show segment that will bring about conversations with celebrity guests, such as Abby Lee Miller (Dance Moms), Taylor Hale (Winner of Big Brother Season 24), Fenton Bailey, Ts Madison, Nicole Byer, Trixie Mattel, Sasha Colby, Rickey Thompson, Shawn Breathwaite (Astrologist), Colton Haynes, Orville Peck, Dominique Jackson, and Isis King. All because this crew is eager to entertain us, wow us, and keep it real through a show that is clearly designed to offer up a unique and refreshing viewing experience. If anything, it is safe to say they have our attention, courtesy of that nostalgia fueled, shot-for-shot teaser, one that we are now going to share with you. To help spread the word about a new series that will undoubtedly be as fun and as engaging as that teaser, courtesy of a group of artists that are ready to shake things up and surprise us, every single time we tune in.
