It is definitely safe to say that the hit NBC series La Brea was one of the most pleasant surprises of the 2021 television season. Largely because this series provided viewers with a supremely original story, one that was both captivating in nature and invigorating for one’s imagination. Since the possibilities seemed endless when it came to the fascinating and primal, final destination for the intrepid characters that traveled through that sinkhole in the series premiere. In fact, this idea was so compelling to audiences that the network approved a second season post haste.
However, that announcement was really all that fans have heard about this show since its season finale, a move that has left everyone hungry and eager to get a taste of what is in store for these intrepid souls and well… the good news is, the wait for news regarding this series, is finally over. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 303 of ‘The Split’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
What comes next, is a question that we often associate with supremely dark times in our lives. For those ugly days upend everything to the point where we are dying to know how we are either going to start over or face the next wave of strife. But the fact of the matter is, that is a question that is applicable to far more than just the worst of times. It is something that we can absolutely apply to important new chapters in our lives, especially when relationships end. Because it helps us to look ahead and ponder upon what will change without a particular lover in our lives and it is that very question that is explored in the next episode of The Split on Sundance Now. For when we catch up with everyone here, it’s obvious that a lot of what these characters want relationship wise, is no longer possible. So, like it or not, looking at what comes next and exploring it is the only logical course of action. Which in Rose’s case, involved figuring out what parts of the past she wanted to carry into tomorrow regarding her lost love. For she knew that moving on was what was next for her, and that motivated her to hastily push forward and remove everything that reminded her of James initially, thinking a clean break was the right way to handle it. But it didn’t take long for her to realize, that she needed something of substance, some kind of memory, and with the firm’s help… since she did donate most of his stuff and was told she couldn’t have it back… she reclaimed what she needed and realized that she should in fact, take a little time on such matters. Just to fully understand what would make her whole as the days moved along. Which was a plot thread that once again put realism on display since so many of us have or will struggle with what we keep from yesterday when a relationship ends in any capacity so we can embrace what comes next without something heavy hanging over us and cherish what that partner taught us. But of course, Rose wasn’t the only one exploring this question, Hannah was of course… in on this as well. But her path to what comes next, was a touch more complex. Because for some time she was just pining over her lost love and was of course, butting heads with Kate at every turn. Which included stepping in when their cases crossed paths and of course… fighting with Nathan over the fact that Kate was continuing to be quickly integrated into the family’s life, in the hopes of seemingly making her a new matriarch of sorts. A move cemented by Nathan hosting Kate for dinner with the kids. A choice that proved to be disastrous, since Olivia was able to figure out that Kate was pregnant and did not respond to it well. But what matters more here, is that being surrounded by this, finally helped Hannah to realize that there was no going back and to focus on what was next. Which for her, involved rekindling an old flame. For Christie returned to London after a stint in New York and he hadn’t returned home just for the sake of being around familiar places and people. He straight up missed Hannah and made no bones about informing her of such and his hope was that she would take a chance on them once again and see where their love might take them at last since she was clearly available again. And when faced with the reality that Nathan was indeed moving on, she decided she had nothing to lose and that what might come next, was a second chance at a missed opportunity. Which in turn, led Hannah to Christie’s hotel room and a night of much needed passion and desire. A move that reminds us, that sometimes what comes next, is doing our best to let go and just see where potential romance can take us. If anything, it seems more and more that this final season of the series, is preparing everyone here for the next chapter in their lives. Since so many of the moments explored thus far, speak to closure and endings and tomorrow and well… that’s allowing for a powerful season of storytelling to take place. One that is helping us to say goodbye to three seasons of brilliance. The kind that may wrap up in a manner as bittersweet and realistic as what we examined here. Since all of this, felt as though we were simply living alongside these characters and were able to learn about actions that all of us take part in. Since figuring out a way forward when a loved one dies is part of the human condition, as is learning our value again and reconciling the end of what we thought was a great love and well, with only three episodes left in this saga, it is definitely safe to say we are all eager to see, where this incredible story is going to take us before we have to bid farewell to its amazing ruminations upon love and life and everything in between. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt

The last time we settled in to discuss the wondrous AMC+ series, This Is Going to Hurt, we talked a little bit about the possibility that the good times that Adam Kay was finally enjoying in this story… weren’t going to last. For the universe is a place of balance and in order to achieve that balance, bad times have to accompany the good… but early on in the next episode of this show… it really didn’t seem as though that kind of tipping of the scales was remotely possible. For when we catch up with Adam, here, he’s basically on cloud nine and why shouldn’t he be? After all, he’s engaged and happy and his engagement party is drawing near and well… work was seemingly back to normal. After all, the complaint was gone, giving rise to just good times. That is until… a powerful letter arrived in Adam’s mailbox. One that immediately informed him that a formal complaint about him had been filed with the GNC and that put Adam in quite the sour place. Because he was indeed trying so hard to be a good doctor and recover from that mess, but this just put him in a dark place, as did the day’s events. To the point where he flat out began to accuse coworkers of trying to end his career. Which spoke to how much this job did matter to Adam at this point in his life and how much this rattled him, and what’s amazing is that difficult moments weren’t just extended to Adam in this tale. For we would be remiss to not talk about Shruti and how she too was struggling with her job. Because the pressure continued to get to her and the endless waves of bad news needing to be delivered to families, combined with fatigue, frustration, and that very pressure… motivated Shruti to become quite glib and direct with her patients. Something she quickly learned only works with the right people when Vicky had to step in and handle a complaint regarding her and well… all of this was cause for concern. Because this just doesn’t seem like Shruti, and her odd behavior only accelerated at the end of the tale when she forwent studying to just get drunk at Adam’s engagement party. Speaking of that party, well that was the true low point of this story for Adam. A place where everything that was wrong in his life at the moment boiled over completely. Because despite his best efforts to enjoy the night, Adam couldn’t let that complaint go and when he had a chance to confront anyone and everyone that he thought could have filed it, he did. Which led to some ugly words being sent Shruti’s way and the truth. In that, it was Tracy that filed the complaint because she had a great deal of concerns about Adam and how he conducted himself with patients and how he carried himself. Which was a humbling revelation that put him into a downward spiral, that led to an ugly end to the party. Wherein he basically insulted his love and put the wedding and their future in doubt. Which was… quite the powerful way to end what turned out to be a dark tale. One that genuinely hammered home how the bad times are just as strong as the good and certainly provide a sense of balance. Not to mention, everything that happened here, should allow for both Adam and Shruti to take a moment and really evaluate the path they are on and if this is what they want or not. Either way, this was just powerful and realistic television, the kind that was raw, and visceral and relatable, and it will be genuinely fascinating to see what kind of fallout comes out of the ugly moments present here. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt

It is definitely safe to say, that we experience a bevy of different emotions when a relationship ends in any capacity. But of the many that surge through our veins in the midst of such a mess… there is one that stands out above the rest, fear. Because the end of a relationship means that we are now in uncharted territory and we don’t know what life is going to be like without someone we considered to be our one person at our side, and that is indeed terrifying. To the point where it might motivate us to take part in behaviors that are out of the norm to reconcile that fear and well… that is top of mind today, because those are the behaviors that were put on display in the next episode of The Split on Sundance Now. For when we catch up with Hannah and Rose in the next chapter, they’re paralyzed with that fear and understandably take part in those out of character behaviors. After all, Rose has lost the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with. And while she tried to do her best to keep it together here and be strong… she could not. Because the finality of the situation settled in quickly for Rose and that allowed for the fear to take hold. Which brought about some powerful and familiar moments for certain, the kind that weren’t easily resolved, they just involved the grieving process and that utter terror that accompanies not having a clue what comes next. And kudos to the show for just showing us this in the raw… without resolution so we could take part in some relatable and realistic moments and be reminded of how grief makes us act in ways we normally don’t. But while those behaviors might seem commonplace in a way, there were some genuinely outlandish ones present in this tale and that was handled by Hannah for certain. Because with James’ passing, she began to ponder upon the futility and silliness of working to keep Nathan out of her life. Which in turn motivated her to straight up ask Nathan to forget about the divorce and start anew and let that fresh start guide them into a bold new chapter of their relationship. But the admission regarding Kate’s pregnancy, put a stop to that and let the fear of the unknown take hold and well… Hannah slid downhill from there. Since she took the time to insult Kate and Nathan at Kate’s book signing event. An act that made it clear that fear ruled the day and gave her a false expectation that perhaps creating a grand scene would solve her problem. However, that was futile for certain. Since Nathan had made his choice and was moving toward life with Kate and fatherhood again and that indulgence of fear, also brought about… some backlash for Hannah. For as science has taught us… for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction and Nathan definitely responded in kind. By doubling down on the divorce proceedings and injecting new terms into the mix. All in the hope of teaching Hannah a lesson and of course, making this worth his while as well and this too… was simply powerful to watch. For this was fear at its finest and its strongest, and watching it play out in two dynamic ways, truly led to one fascinating and engaging tale. One that serves to remind us that The Split remains one of the most honest and human show out there. Since it truly manages to capture the good and the bad of who we are and how that translates to relationships and the ups and down that they harbor and well, all this episode does… is demand us to continue the journey. So, we can see if Hannah can overcome her fear and/or do something constructive with it and find the peace and love she craves and honestly, the same goes for Rose. Since she is clearly in need of something to hold onto right now and thankfully, we don’t have to wait all that long to see what comes next… since this series returns to Sundance Now tomorrow (6/30) with a brand-new episode. Apple TV+ Releases Trailer and Announces Premiere Date for the Third and Final Season of ‘See’6/29/2022 Written by John Edward Betancourt
It used to be, that the concept of the trilogy was limited strictly to film and novels. For that seemed like the perfect place to put together an epic trio of stories that would take the audience on quite the wild ride. Stories that often feature a reconciliation between estranged parents and their children, are handled in a supremely dramatic manner and understandably so. After all, family is something that American culture holds in supremely high regard, so the thought of a family unit being devastated or broken in any capacity is serious business. For it means failure of the family unit America prizes and the serious nature of those stories doesn’t end with their tone. Because they also focus heavily on what went wrong to create the divide in the first place, so that others can easily learn from those mistakes and never let them happen, so the majesty of the family unit can be preserved. But while it is fascinating to know that such stories are designed to examine and teach, there is a draw back to their general design.
For starters, they’re kind of stuck in the past. Because the family units presented in those tales are often narrow in scope and vision and don’t reflect what the American family unit actually looks in our modern society. Not to mention, they focus on safe concepts that have been poured over often, rather than really having a strong conversation on what really creates divides in families and how potentially to heal them. But thankfully, the storytelling landscape is changing, as audiences continue to demand honesty and depth from their stories and that is allowing for tales such as these to transform and provide viewers and readers with better tales in this vein. In fact, Prime Video is now host to a show that explores such matters in that far more progressive light and that makes The Lake quite the fascinating series. For this is a tale that introduces us to a father named Justin, who is desperately trying to make amends to his biological daughter, Billie. Whom he handed over to a different set of parents back in the day because Billie was a surprise pregnancy and Justin needed to find himself because of how young he was when this happened. But now that he understands who he is… he feels as though the time is right to reconnect and make things right, so he takes Billie to his old stomping grounds at the lake to make that happen. Which is… quite the unique plot for certain. In large part because it doesn’t feature anything traditional regarding this type of story. Since it is often the child that seeks resolution and runs into a resistant parent, not the other way around and not through such circumstances. Not to mention, the father figure in this tale, isn’t one-dimensional as is often the case in these stories. For Justin is a supremely well-fleshed out, dynamic character that does indeed know what he’s about and he finds challenges in this story outside of his quest to make peace with his daughter. Since the past waits for him at the lake and he has to face that head on as the story continues along and Billie is quite resistant to his attempts at making peace. Adding depth and conflict to a story that is also… shockingly fun. Because in another surprise twist regarding this type of story, a lot of what happens here is handled in a comedic manner and that’s also quite the pleasant and uplifting surprise, one that is equally as impactful. Because it helps the viewer to process the heavier stuff on screen and never lets the subject matter become overwhelming. Plus, this is a series that also features… some quality acting and a big name as well. Since Julia Stiles pops in as Justin’s stepsister Maisy-May and speaking of Justin, Jordan Gavaris does a wonderful job of bringing Justin’s desire to resolve his past in an earnest light and he wonderfully anchored by Madison Shamoun’s dynamic performance as Billie and well, in the end… all of these elements, and the fact that this series is champion for diversity and representation, make this a worthwhile and delightful watch. Because in addition to being a revolutionary story about family, it is also an engaging and honest story about family. One that features issues that are finally relatable and the best news of all, is that you can watch the The Lake in its entirety right now. For season one of this dynamic new series is streaming now on Prime Video. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Nine of ‘Bosch: Legacy’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Progress. That’s all fans of crime dramas want. Because they dedicate hours of their time to reading or watching this type of story and as long as there is progress on the case in question, they know they made the right call in dedicating their time to that particular story and that’s why Bosch: Legacy on Amazon Freevee is such a satisfying venture, and such a beloved show. Because week in and week out, it makes progress in the cases it presents and rewards the audience in the process and well… progress is top of mind today, largely because the next episode in this phenomenal saga… takes the time to reward the loyal fans of this series in quite the lovely manner. Because two lingering cases on this series, which have been steadily moving along… were pushed forward in quite the dynamic and satisfying manner in ‘Cat Got a Name?’ For instance, Maddie’s search for the serial screen cutter/assaulter that was working her beat… finally paid off in spades. Because the LAPD poured resources into the area to try and find the guy and find clues regarding him and well… Maddie was able to find his luchador mask, a move that could allow for forensics to pull valuable data and evidence from it. The kind that could in fact, be used in court when and if they catch them and… she may have inadvertently discovered who has involvement in this matter. Since a simple phone call to an inspector of sorts, revealed some odd behavior from the man… leading one to wonder what he knows and how close he is to this. But while that have to wait for another time, it was still incredibly satisfying to see this case move forward and remind us how this show rewards us, and the wonder of progress didn’t end there. Because the Whitney Vance case was also blown wide open in some surprising ways. For Bosch was preparing to put everything together regarding the will… so that Vibiana could finally inherit her millions and in doing so… he came across something quite stunning, with the help of some fellow gumshoes. In that, it appeared as though Vance didn’t die of natural causes and after a conversation with Ida Porter, and a closer look at the will he was sent… he was able to ascertain… that she was the one responsible for his death and this new will, and he was right. For she did indeed confess to ending his life early in the hopes of giving him peace, and in the hopes of getting her own piece of the pie for years of service, and well… that wrapped up another loose thread in this case while another one… unraveled in a scary manner. Because while Bosch was putting two and two together, he and Honey were working to throw Vance’s wannabe heirs off the track. All so the DNA evidence would remain quite safe, but alas… their work was costly in nature. Since the assassin hired by the company took the time to burn down the facility where they thought the DNA had been taken and to make matters worse, they got to Sloan and made him sing. All so they could find Vibiana and end her before the opportunity for her and her son to inherit that massive fortune could come to fruition. Which in turn led to quite the cliffhanger ending. Wherein Vibiana and her son were racing about their apartment building to find shelter from an assassin that is hellbent on completing the job and well, hopefully Bosch can arrive in time before all of the incredible progress made here… is wiped away with a pair of bullets. However, while we wait to see what comes of that harrowing ending, we can bask in the wonder of one delightful and satisfying tale. Because it was genuinely satisfying to see all of these cases move forward and even see the newer one’s progress as well. Since Honey has the LAPD spinning their wheels with that pending lawsuit and Bosch is also narrowing in on who might be responsible for the death of that beloved and kind doctor and well, you simply cannot go wrong with a crime drama that is utterly hell bent on giving its fans what they want, and all this does is compel us to continue the journey. So, we can see how many of these stories can be wrapped up in the season one finale of this delightful and refreshing crime drama. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Truly one of the most difficult stories to assemble for a writer, is the coming-of-age story, for several reasons. For instance, when a writer sits down to ponder upon such matters and put them to page, they do so as an adult. Which means a lot of the raw memories from our youth aren’t quite as sharp as they once were and some are even echoes, making that period of our lives difficult to properly replicate on the page and/or the screen since there is little to draw from. Not to mention, what was important back then, isn’t as important now, making it equally as difficult for the creative mind to find a way to make their experiences as relatable and as powerful as possible.
But believe it or not, with a little care, creating a unique coming of age story can be done. One just has to focus on the fundamental elements that pre-teens or teens go through that more or less transcend time and that is precisely why Fairfax on Prime Video needs to be applauded and celebrated often. For this is that rare series that continues to capture the zeitgeist of being young and the troubles we face at that age, and what’s truly amazing, is that this show’s second season… continues to find new ways to reflect upon those sometimes-distant memories and what they meant to us, and how they helped us grow. In the most hilarious ways imaginable of course since season two never once loses sight of its comedic roots. But jokes aside for a moment, this season really does a phenomenal job of capturing the key elements of what it means to be a pre-teen. Because we all wanted freedom and a taste of adulthood in our youth and that’s present here since the kids work hard at times to find just that. Not to mention, it also reminds us of another universal quest we have at that age. In that, we want to be popular so badly and be accepted and, in the limelight, and it is quite relatable to see the characters work to obtain that. All while they come to discover who they are and the importance of having wonderful friendships during that time of our lives. Making this a powerful season of storytelling for certain. One where incredible laughs take place on a consistent basis. Which can be attributed to the fact that these episodes, know how to make those awkward moments comical in nature instead of as tragic as we believed them to be back in the day. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the animation style and the child-like nature the characters haven’t left behind just yet… allows for fun and wild moments to take place. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that season two also features a bevy of amazing cameos from comedic legends. The kind that allows for more comedy to take place and the fun of trying to guess who is behind that guest voice in question. But what matters most, is the sheer fact that this series continues to exude a genuine sense of fun around it and that’s important. Because being a pre-teen or a teenager was just that… fun. For we went on adventures with our friend group, and we did stupid stuff every step of the way and we stayed out late and were goofy and ourselves. And it is that pure aspect of this series that allows for it to continue to be successful in recapturing that era of our lives and well, that makes season two a worthwhile watch for certain. One that is full of heart alongside the fun and the best news of all, is that you can enjoy all of season two right now if you so choose. For all eight episodes are streaming now on Prime Video and we certainly hope you check them out and enjoy them as much as we did. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode 304 of ‘London Kills’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
One of the most difficult lessons we will ever have to learn in life, is that we can only control so much around us. And what makes that so difficult to process, is that our society believes otherwise. For our parents, friends, co-workers and even strangers on the street… hold to the mantra that we are the masters of our domain, and it doesn’t matter what the universe wants, through sheer determination and moxie… we can bend it and people to our will. Which is why we are shocked when we learn how much of the world is out of our sphere of influence and how, people don’t bend to our wills when we demand them to do so. But while the majority of us, eventually process this reality and learn to control what we can… there are others who struggle with this. To the point, where they learn how negative behaviors and influences can be exerted over others and certain situations to get what they want and well… these are people we work to avoid in life because they are supremely unpleasant and oddly enough, potentially dangerous… as evidenced by the next episode of London Kills. For when we catch up with the team in ‘Control Freak’, Rob and Billie are called out to check out quite the surprise. In that, someone has discovered the body of a man that was reported missing weeks ago, and that of course… leads to a detailed investigation regarding his obviously violent death and the circumstances surrounding it. Which early on… leads nowhere and fast. For there are witnesses that saw him leaving his house and other alibis check out. But slowly and surely, as this duo began to really dig deep into the details, it became clear that something wasn’t adding up. Especially when they considered that other potential suspects in this case, had no motive to kill the departed… nor did any of their stories add up either. Which forced this duo to pull Vivienne into the case so she could use her instincts and keen eye to help them bear the truth and as it turned out… it was the wife of the deceased behind the whole thing. An act that she committed because she was in fact, a control freak… one that had worked her way into the career path she wanted through sheer will and force and she believed she could reform a broken man in the same manner and have her perfect life. But when he didn’t comply and turned away… rather than learn the lesson… she turned to murder. However, while that was a fascinating examination of the dangers of not learning the reality that we can only control so much… this was also an episode that took the time to catapult the whole Grace Harper mess forward in an unfortunate manner. Because despite putting DCS Mulgrew under twenty-four-hour surveillance and supposedly getting a deal in place to finally name names and end this madness, the chief superintendent was keen on instead… hitting Rob over the head when he was assigned to watch him and make a run for it. A move that had catastrophic results. For a frantic search for him at his usual haunts, ended with a phone call to the team from Vivienne. Wherein she revealed she was asked to meet with him at an undisclosed location… and it was all for naught. For when she arrived, DSC Jack Mulgrew was dead, clearly murdered by the people he feared. Which of course, brings the team no closer to resolution on their corruption case. If anything, this makes things worse. For now, Vivienne is at risk since she knows too much and when you think about it… everyone else is as well. Since they too have knowledge of this scheme, and these men can’t have that. A reality that undoubtedly means that the stage is now set for a grand showdown in the season three finale. But while we wait to see how this mess finally comes together and whether or not it is solved, we can take a moment and celebrate one quality tale. One that offered up another fascinating examination on the darker side of the human condition. The kind that taught us to just keep a firm grip on what we can and roll with the punches as they come, so we don’t lose sight of what matters and lose ourselves within a feeble attempt to control a world composed of chaos. Until next time. |
