Often times in crime dramas, the instant a plot thread is dealt with and resolved, or if one is moved onto the backburner for a later date… they’re basically forgotten about and it makes sense as to why. For these stories have other cases and moments to focus upon, so there’s no need to pay what’s done and what’s waiting any more mind. Just let the investigators do their thing and wow us along the way, and resurrect that one plot thread when the moment is right. But while that definitely keeps the story lively and moving and engaging, it is a bit of grave injustice to the overall story. In that, it tends to remove a touch of realism from a story that should be grounded in such. Since in real life, there is fallout when a chapter closes in our lives, and things we try to set aside… always bubble back to the surface of our minds and lives. Which is another reason why Bosch: Legacy is a series of note. Because it keeps the realism in play and lets nothing go the wayside, as evidenced by its next episode. For ‘One of Your Own’ is a story that explored the fallout of Carl Rogers’ death, rather than just tuck it away. Courtesy of the fact that the man that Bosch and Honey pressed for information turned up dead. Leaving Honey to wonder if she was going to be in trouble with the law since the Feds had questions for her and Harry about that conversation. But thankfully, she was in the clear, thanks to the fact that the Russians wanted a man that knew too much out of the picture, and it was cool to see this mess linger a little longer since loose ends are a very real problem in everything we do. Plus, it was a good learning opportunity for Honey… to maybe not be so keen to cross certain lines. Plus, this episode followed up heavily on what Maddie has been dealing with. Since this is another story that took the time to teach her another valuable lesson about police work. Specifically, just how damn difficult it really is to keep one’s emotions at bay doing this job, even when the badge demands it. Because she felt awful about having to play icy with the victim of the predator roaming about, to keep focused on the manhunt at hand. Because she genuinely believed someone hurt this badly by a crime this heinous, deserved more humanity and empathy, and she also got to witness firsthand how anger and fury are dangerous to harbor in this job. Since she and others eventually cornered the shooter that hurt her academy friend… and he and his girlfriend died terribly over claims he was reaching for his gun. But it was strongly implied, that this was a chance to make a scumbag pay and that definitely gave Maddie pause through the lesson in question. As for Harry, well after he spent a little time with the feds, he spent a little time working the case that was introduced in episode one, since the cops weren’t doing much to find the doctor’s killer and he of course… continued along with the Vance investigation. Only because Dominick’s old buddy remembered the name of the newspaper where Dominick’s potential wife worked and that… led to a name. One that revealed that there was an heir to the Vance family line, several in fact. Since Dominick left behind a wife, a daughter and now a grandson and that’s huge. Because it means that Dominick’s family is about to come into an ungodly amount of money, the kind that will protect them and fund them for generations, provided of course… the Vance empire can be dealt with first, since they are still watching and waiting to cause trouble and seize that cash. Which means that a fight awaits Harry Bosch as he works to secure the rightful heir to the Vance cash throne and well, it will be an epic battle for certain, since so many others want in on that payout. But while we wait to see how that shakes out, and we will because this show leaves no stone unturned, we can in fact… celebrate an episode that did just that. Because this was a masterclass story in how to properly create an organic fictional world. One that truly feels realistic in every sense of the word. Because all of this felt akin to just observing lives and it was wonderful to see important storylines return and move forward and watch others move toward their natural conclusion and well, all this episode does is once again leave us eager to continue the journey. So, we can indeed see where all of these important moments are going to take us as we close in on the season one finale of this magnificent show. Until next time.
