It wasn’t that long ago, that Americans across the nation watched in horror, as the United States Capitol lay under siege over the simple act of certifying a general election. One that was about to bring sweeping and welcome change to Washington, something the insurrections on that day, couldn't fathom, and well… it is definitely safe to say that all of us were harboring an important question on that dark day. Specifically… how did we get here? Because this wasn’t the America that any of us were taught about growing up and this wasn’t the kind of thing Americans are supposed to do when they fundamentally disagree. But alas, that horrible day was what we had to endure, and the lasting impact of it and the mystery of how America reached such a low point has haunted our nation since then. To the point where now documentaries and stories are popping up to sort that mess out, so that we understand how the rise of a guy like Trump took place… in the hopes of preventing a repeat of that kind of wanton madness and lust for power in a nation designed to embrace change in leadership often. And it just so happens, that this week’s episode of The Orville: New Horizons can be added to the growing list of creative universes looking to make sense of such of madness. For ‘Gently Falling Rain’ is a tale that explored those root causes and offered advice on how we perhaps prevent it going forward, and it accomplished these grand and sweeping feats, by having a wondrous and beautiful moment in galactic history… be completely and utterly ruined by underestimated forces. For early on in this tale, it appeared as though the Planetary Union and the Krill were about to embark on a brave new future. One where peace prevailed amongst both people at last. A move that was decried by seemingly minority voices on the Krill home world, to the point where the Supreme Chancellor was free from worry about signing a peace treaty with the Union on election night. In fact, he was so secure in his return to power that he invited the President of the Planetary Union and an attaché consisting of Admiral Halsey and Captain Mercer to the home world on this night and well… that’s when things took a turn for the worse. For Teleya was the leader of these dissenting voices and her side won the election and immediately wrought havoc upon this world and well… that left Ed in quite the stunned place.
Because he believed that he had reached her a year ago through the intimate and beautiful time they spent together as a couple. But in the end, she saw opening up to the galaxy as a threat to her people and opted to create a nationalist society above all else and she was so hell bent on having her voice and her beliefs heard after having them ‘suppressed’ for so long… that she shed the blood of her fellow Krill and was ready to start a war with the Union over it. And not even Ed and his discovery that they had a daughter together would shake her belief in the old institutions when there were obviously better ways forward and well… it is Teleya’s actions here and lust for power and her unfortunate path… that breaks down what happened to America.
In that, the marginalized finally had enough of being ignored and not having their ideas heard and implemented so they rallied behind the worst possible people to give them what they desired. Out of a fear of change and a panicked realization their generation and its blasé ideals accomplished nothing lasting in a nation where history is prized. Which is a sobering answer to that question since it does put some onus on everyone who wanted to move forward. Because we didn’t communicate with those folks, nor did we help them to understand the world’s changes. Something that could have swayed some and made it easier to swallow. But alas, what’s done is done and going forward, the answer is simple. In that we have to figure out how to engage with one another once again and have quality discussions about the direction of the moment, while working to remove old concepts from the future. Which means it is imperative to educate the next generation, like Anaya on what the world should be and how they can impact it and make it a better place. So, when their times comes… they can do what the adults currently cannot and be objective and look at bigger pictures, and impact change without old ideologies and concepts weighing them down. Which is an answer that might not be ideal all things considered, but clearly, we are at a point where only discourse remains. But while that might not be what some want to hear as a solution… it is more than we’ve had in the past as a way forward and that answer, and that incredible analysis make this another brilliant episode from one brilliant show. One that is also bold in nature since it takes guts to address the insurrection in the room head on and it will be interesting to see what other burning topics The Orville: New Horizons intends to address as season three continues along. Until next time.

Written by Shae Rufe Caution: This article contains spoilers for the series premiere of ‘Austin Dillon’s Life in the Fast Lane’. USA premiered a fantastic new show last night featuring NASCAR Driver Austin Dillon and his amazing journey. Dillon has invited us into his life, introduced us to his family, and gave us all an intimate behind the scenes of what it’s really like to be a NASCAR driver. Dillion drives for his family’s company, RCR, which was founded by his grandfather, driving legend, Richard Childress. Dillon does everything in his power to prove that his is worthy of driving for RCR and doesn’t take anything for granted. While he may be a legacy driver, he puts in the work to prove that he deserves everything, and earns it by skill, rather than familial ties. Along for the ride is his wife Whitney, who shares his passion for racing and supports him in his efforts to win. Their son Ace as adorable as can be, and while he’s a little too young to race, he’s not too young to cheer on his dad. Paul Swan is Dillon’s Pit Crew Chief and best friend. His job is to ensure that Dillon stays on track to win and keeps his car in tip top shape. Turns out, Pit Crews have to be insanely fast when they fuel the race cars and change the tires. Swan’s all about keeping that time as low as possible. As he says, time in the pit is time off the track, and every second lost can cost a driver the win. Swan is also a giant goofball, full of fun, energy and practical jokes. While he takes his job seriously, he isn’t about to shut down his fun side. His wife, Mariel, is his support and is expecting their first child. The first episode did a wonderful job of introducing everyone. Whitney and Mariel were best friends when they met Austin and Paul. Whitney and Austin were the first to get married, while Paul and Mariel eventually caught up. The two couples live next door to each other, and as any family does, they often eat dinner together, travel together, and are inseparable. There’s something to be said about a friendship like that. These four have definitely found the perfect balance of work and home life. While they communicate well at home, they’re even better at work. Swan and Dillon have a great communication style and don’t hold back. They want each other to succeed, and that bleeds through in all aspects of their lives. Having a support system like that is something to be truly cherished while Whitney and Mariel are the same in that respect. With introductions out of the way, it’s off to Daytona! They’ll all be there for 2 weeks as races commence. The first race is thankfully a test race, as not everything goes according to plan. Dillon and Swan’s team are not on their best game, with the pit stop taking longer than it should have and the car not getting completely gassed up. There was a bit of a mix-up with Dillon’s brother, who is also a racer, just for a different team, and that threw everyone off. Thankfully, this is just a practice race, everyone is still getting their bearings and they’re learning the ins and outs of getting into the right flow. Hopefully, this is what gets them set for a good driving season, and a big win at the end. With that, only time will tell as the rest of the season unfolds. This is such a fun show! A glimpse into a world not often seen from behind the scenes, and a family opening their doors to give us a sneak peek behind the racetrack. This season is shaping up to be a wonderful ride. Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Eight of ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Once upon a time, the crew of the Starship Enterprise encountered a strange nebula. When they tried to warp away from it, however, the ship wouldn’t move. This, of course, is not a good thing. The ship lurched and Erika got hurt, so the captain called for the CMO. This coincided with the Chief Medical Officer’s experimentation, in hopes of finding a cure for his very sick daughter. The experiment blew up in his face, and tired as he was, M’Benga still went to the bridge to see to his fallen crew member. However, when he arrived, things were quite different than what they had been. He was being referred to as King, and the whole crew was in Medieval attire. As though, the book he’d been reading to his daughter had somehow come to life and embodied the entire ship. With everyone stuck in this fantasy, except for M’Benga himself, it’s a mystery he has to work to solve while playing along. It’s a rocky start as he tries to get to sickbay and find a tricorder, in hopes of scanning everyone who’s effected. And it stands, M’Benga is the only one who is himself, while everyone else is playing a part from the storybook he’s been reading Rukiya when she’s out of the buffer. The thing is, he has no idea what brought this on, and so far, everyone is exhibiting higher than normal levels of dopamine. All seems lost as to why this happened or how to fix it. M’Benga actually thinks he might be hallucinating for a hot minute, from his experiment gone wrong, until Hemmer appears, whilst being dragged away by a security team, who are apparently the bad guys. Hemmer is the only crew member that also remembers, proving there is something more going on here. Thankfully, everyone thinks Hemmer is a sorcerer, and he’s able to use his mad science skills to keep the ruse up, playing along until they can get into Engineering and take a better look at what’s really going on. As it so happens, the Nebula is sporting an entity that created itself, because of course it did, and the Entity is why the crew believes they’re in some fantasy novel. Granted, seeing Pike act cowardly and betray M’Benga, while Erika is the lovable knight is entertaining. But there’s something off about dark sorcerer Spock and evil Queen Uhura. Entertaining, for sure, yet still odd seeing most of their characters flipped. Especially with La’an being afraid of Uhura.
Thankfully, nobody really gets hurt with this strange fantasy mix-up, and Hemmer uses some mad transporter skills to secure Uhura, Spock, and the security team in Cargo Bay 12, while M’Benga meets his daughter, who escaped the buffer. A scan proves that she’s no longer sick, and a communication with the Entity, through Hemmer, shows why. The Entity has cured her, but it won’t let the ship go. It was drawn to Rukiya and her loneliness because it felt that same isolation. If the ship leaves, Rukiya will get sick again. M’Benga won’t choose his crew over his daughter and vice versa. The Entity offers M’Benga another solution.
Rukiya can join with the Entity’s consciousness and live forever; free from sickness and able to live the life she wants. It’s not M’Benga’s decision to make, so he asks Rukiya what she wants. Of course, she chooses to live, as what is the point of living if she’s trapped in the buffer and sick. M’Benga is heartbroken, as are we all. Shortly after she leaves, Rukiya returns. She’s grown now. A few moments for M’Benga, is years for her. She’s had so much fun living and creating her own stories. She’s happy. And she’s named the Entity, Debra. She makes M’Benga promise to go live his life and be happy too. They’ll meet again, she’s sure of it. With his promise, the ship and crew are returned to normal. However, he’s now the only one who truly remembers what’s happened. Even the security footage is scrubbed clean. And really? Perhaps that is for the best.

Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of ‘The Ipcress File’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Over the course of the past few weeks, the AMC+ series, The Ipcress File, has consistently found unique ways to surprise and delight its audience. In part by being a perfect recreation of the spy movies of the 1950s and 1960s, courtesy of its delightfully whimsical characters and dynamic storytelling, while at the same time… revolutionizing the genre. All by making the Americans the villain of the tale and by putting our heroes through the wringer emotionally and physically and well… this amazing contrast storytelling wise… definitely left all of us wondering as to how exactly this incredible story was going to come to a close. Because it had the potential to go all out and stun us with an ending unlike any in the genre or it could instead... offer up something quite traditional. Well as it turns out, the season finale of this incredible show… opted to do a little bit of both and give us a bittersweet ending. One that was filled with traditional moments and unexpected ones, and it accomplished that feat… by returning Harry Palmer to the land of the living. Wherein he and Jean were reunited, and he was cared for and for a time… it appeared as though life was going to get back to normal. Especially when one considers that Paul gave Jean all the information, she needed regarding the brainwashing work that was conducted so that Harry could properly recover from this nightmare and well… that was that. But some surprise news from high up, left the team in a stunned and concerned place. Because there was talk of cutting budgets and disbanding the unit, despite recovering an asset and a risk. And that… combined with the odd details of a potential joint information session with the Americans while President John F. Kennedy was in town, left Dalby and his team suspicious that more was at play. Which prompted them to dig deep with known players and well, what they uncovered was shocking. In that, nothing was what it seemed and corruption and lies were everywhere to be found and… the operation wasn’t over yet. In fact, the bad guys' plan was to lull everyone into a false sense of security so revenge could be paid for the Bay of Pigs invasion, through Harry Palmer, whom was still an asset waiting to be activated. But thanks to Dalby’s fine work and the work of his team… evil was thwarted, and the players were seemingly out of commission. Saving the free world from disaster and giving Harry a new lease on life and giving the agency a second chance as well. Which is about as traditional an ending as it gets. But alas, what makes this ending so bittersweet and heavy and different, is that… the agency only delayed the inevitable. For we know how Kennedy’s life ends and… Harry wasn’t necessarily cured, just stopped from doing the worst. Making for a realistic ending of sorts, one that features the flaws and imperfections and chaos of the world and well… it worked here through and through. Because that really is the perfect way to bring a spy drama that toyed with revolutionary ideas to a close and unrest in America in 1963, somehow adds commentary and parallel to modern America and really in the end, this was just a great finale. Since it found a way to bring together the best parts of the spy drama with something new, and of course… it was tense and surprising and fun and filled to the brim with epic moments and well… the only real complaint one can lobby against this finale, is that it is the end of the journey and there is no more story to tell. And that’s as shame because this was just a blast through and through and who knows, hopefully AMC+ decides to revisit this world down the line and if not, at least they brought one wild and dynamic ride to a proper conclusion. Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season three premiere of ‘The Split’.
When we are young, we are taught that true love… is something we need to seek out and obtain and cherish. For it will cure our ails and give us a strength we never knew we could obtain and above all else… it will bring us true happiness. Because knowing that someone loves us with all of their heart engenders endless joy and well, that definitely motivates us to make finding our one true love a priority in life and when we do… boy… are we in for a rude and powerful awakening. Because we focus so much on the wonder of love, that we rarely discuss the hard realities that actually accompany the flutter in our chest over the thought of another. Such as the fact that communication is essential to keeping a relationship healthy, as is putting in the effort to keep the spark going and that… not every relationship is going to make it. Because sometimes people grow apart or their priorities in life change and their partner no longer aligns with those changes. Which is why shows such as The Split on Sundance Now, should be commended and celebrated, since it has over the past two seasons, shown us those tough realities in a compelling manner. Allowing for audiences everywhere to gain context regarding lessons we all should have learned long ago and well… the incredible lessons this series loves to send our way are back on the airwaves courtesy of the show’s season three premiere. For this is a tale that took the time to inform us, that our emotions don’t just switch off when the end of a major relationship comes forth. Because we’ve likely been around that person for a long time and the connection we share takes time to properly separate and that can lead to trouble without proper communication and self-work. As evidenced by how Hannah and Nathan’s journey went in this tale. Because despite appearing to be the perfect divorcée couple, since they were on good terms, they found friction over the fact that Nathan was ready to move on emotionally by dating someone else, and Hannah simply wasn’t. A move that immediately led to all kinds of fights and tears and the lesson inherent. Which made for some fascinating and powerful moments for certain, the kind that will hang heavy over this season… as will the other big moment in this tale. For this is a story that took its exploration of the difficulties that accompany the end of a relationship, one step further… by setting up a journey that will examine how hard it is let go, when love ends abruptly and without our input. A feat accomplished by way of a harrowing sequence of events. For dear James was hit by a speeding car on his way, ironically, to an engagement party for Liv. Which led to some terrible news when Rose and her friends arrived… in that, James didn’t survive his injuries. Ripping a hole in Rose’s heart and leaving her in undiscovered country without her love and well… that’s a horrifying way to set the stage for an examination, but an impactful one none the less. Since people we love do fade from our lives or are taken from us abruptly and we have to square that emotionally and that is also a reality we don’t discuss enough in this life. Which makes this a bold premiere for certain, one that touches on a bevy of important topics for the season ahead. One that will undoubtedly dig deeper into other matters as well because that’s just what this show does, and this writer is here for it. Because that’s the kind of refreshing writing and storytelling the television landscape needs more of, and it will be genuinely fascinating to see where this bold season is going to take us next as this show embarks on what appears to be its biggest and bravest season to date. Until next time. Written by John Edward Betancourt
Caution: This article contains spoilers for Episode Four of ‘This Is Going to Hurt’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
Empowerment is a concept that does a great deal for us and rightfully so. Because when one understands its meaning and abides by its teachings… wonders begin to happen in our lives. For we begin to take control of situations we thought were pure chaos and we do so with bravery and determination in our hearts and when we find success in taking the reins of one chaotic situation… it doesn’t take long for us to go after another… until we finally find the peace and stability we so desperately crave in life. If anything, the progressive nature of empowerment because of its teachings, is top of mind today… simply because Adam Kay made it his mantra in the next episode of This Is Going to Hurt on AMC+. For when we catch up with him here, he’s stunned over the fact that his personal life was finally in check and that empowered him… to grow a life outside of the hospital walls. To the point where he left work on time for a change and worked to spend time with his fiancé and learn how to enjoy life a little bit again. Which was an adjustment for certain, since clearly… it has been a while since he’s engaged in small talk that doesn’t involve guts and gore and babies in general. But empowerment didn’t let Adam take a step back in such matters and after that little adjustment period, he found joy in life, and with his home life continuing to come to a peaceful and joyful place, the power of empowerment… motivated Adam, to take control of life at work. Which could not have come at a better time. Since Tracy decided it was high time to bust some chops in the ward, starting with Adam. And that involved going after his skill set and ripping on him and banishing him whenever necessary and to complicate matters further, Dr. Lockhart opted to basically… change his statement and make Adam look the fool… a move that truly left Adam beside himself and frustrated and rightfully so. Because this was a lot to process, but he didn’t dwell on it all for too long before deciding to find a way to make work as comfortable and peaceful as can be. Which in this instance, involved a couple of bold moves on Adam’s part. One of which was spur of the moment, while the other was quite calculated. In that, he flat out confronted Erika about the complaint and threw in a little manipulation to get it dropped and once he learned it was Erika’s sister behind it, he confronted her too and tried to appeal to her humanity and well, when that didn’t take… it was indeed that aforementioned moment, and control over his own emotions that allowed for work to become a safe space for Adam at last. For he was forced to save a life and deliver a baby in a dangerous and risky manner. But he had to take a chance and in doing so, he saved two lives and fought through his doubt and well… that level of bravery and the decision to seize the moment and take control of all things internal… motivated Erika’s sister to drop that complaint and it got Tracy off of his back, and helped him to understand he is good at this and deserves to be here and his day ended at last, with peace and control. If anything, this was a mostly inspirational episode when all is said and done. Largely because it reminds us to be bold and to empower ourselves and take control wherever we can. Because there is a lot more that we can control in this life than we know… so why not go for it and see what happens? But all lessons aside, it was also amazing to watch Adam embrace that lesson and execute it and see nothing, but reward come his way and that kind of growth is beautiful for certain. But there was mention of the fact that not every moment here was uplifting and wonderful, and we’d be foolish to not talk about that darker stuff. Since Shruti struggled mightily in this tale to find inspiration and joy in her job and that seems to have her a crossroads, one where she must decide if she wants this or not and that realistic nugget, does leave one to wonder… if this exploration in empowerment is also fleeting, since life is full of ups and downs and well… the only way to find out for sure, is to tune in next week and see where this journey takes us next. Until then. Written by Shae Rufe
Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season finale of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
What a finale. I truly have no words for this other than, wow. I have been a fan of Star Wars since I was 10, and this show really just brought back the wonder and joy of the series in a way I had not expected. First and foremost, this finale was a finale that beat out all others. Star Wars has always been a fun journey, and this concluded in a great way. While I genuinely hope for a second season, I’m also happy with how this ended. The performances were all spectacular. Right, so. Ben and Leia and the ship of refugees are in grave peril with Vader’s ship firing at them nonstop. They need more time to get the hyperdrive back up, and they’re running out of power for the shields. There’s little hope, and there’s only one answer. Ben is going to take a shuttle and lead them away. He’s going to face Vader once and for all, and one of them will die. We all know they both live, but that’s alright. Ben’s a bit of a dramatic, and I am here for that because… same. Leia is, of course, upset about Ben just leaving her. He did promise to get her back to her family, after all. While she eventually gives in and understands, she does make him promise to come back. She even slips Lola into the pocket of his robes. Ben takes a shuttle from the ship and leaves, and just as predicted, Vader follows. Much to the disappointment of the Grand Inquisitor. The face-off we have all been waiting for finally happens. Vader vs Ben, and Ben is doing his best, but that hate in Vader is strong. The first half of the fight doesn’t go as well as planned, but it is stunningly beautiful in a tragic way. Vader is much more in tune with the dark side at this point and he Force unleashes some fury as he buries Ben alive. Ben struggles, and Obi-Wan has to truly come to terms with who he is vs who he was. It’s not an easy thing to confront the past and let the present bleed into the future, and it’s Leia who oddly helps him remember that. It’s Leia and Luke who are the new hope of the Galaxy.
Ben emerges from his would be grave and truly shows his own power. Obi-Wan is just as gone as Anakin is, the only difference is that he’s not going to wallow anymore. This is a much different battle, one that Anakin cannot keep up with. He’s wounded, ventilator damaged, helmet broken open, and we truly get to see that Anakin is dead. Anakin wasn’t Obi-Wan’s failure, and Vader isn’t Ben’s. Anakin chose to be his own downfall, and they all have to live with that. Anakin really is dead. Ben chooses to live.
While all this was going on Reva flew to Tatooine to search for her own brand of justice. Wounded emotionally and physically, she hunts for Luke, only to face off against Beru and Owen. They fiercely fight to protect their nephew, after all he is their child. Reva isn’t as interested in killing them as she is killing Luke, so she happily discards their attacks in favor of chasing Luke through the desert. She Force trips him on the edge of a small cliff and then attempts to kill him as he’s unconscious. Battling with her own past and trying to force herself to take the life of an innocent child… in the end, Reva can’t do it. She’s not Anakin, she’ll never be Anakin. She’s not weak enough to do such a thing. She returns Luke to Owen and Beru just as Ben arrives to help search for him. With her decision made, and Ben telling her she’s now free to do whatever she wants; Reva leaves her lightsaber in the sand of Tatooine, as is some kind of Jedi tradition on this planet. Later, Ben returns Lola to Leia, and tells her just how much of her parents reside within her. He’ll always be here for her. Leia is choosing her own path, one that will be hard won, but after her journey, she’s seen what the Galaxy is really like. Someone will have to stand up for what’s right. After that, Ben gets to properly meet Luke. And at the very end of it all, his old Master finally returns. Qui-Gon is here to help Ben further his own journey as only a Force Ghost can. Caution: This article contains spoilers for the season two finale of ‘The Wilds’. To revisit the previous episode, click here.
It really is quite fascinating how endings… are never quite what we expect them to be in any capacity. Because in real life, the end just… arrives. We simply quit a bad job and move on, forget about the ex-partner that drove us mad and pay little mind to the annoying friend that we wasted time upon, when in our minds… we expected there to be drama of some kind when the end to those scenarios arrived. Something of substance that would make for a stunning story we could tell often and wow people. But that’s just it, endings really aren’t endings. Nor are they designed for cinematic drama. They’re just another chapter in our story, coming to a close, and we enter the new one as quickly as the old one ends. If anything, the subtle nature of an ‘ending’ and how quickly we transition to new chapters in our lives is top of mind today… because it was put on full display in the season two finale of The Wilds on Prime Video. For ‘Exodus’ is a story that well… was set up to be that perfect ending. Where the boys and the girls left their islands under powerful circumstances and found rescue thanks to Leah’s brave decision to make a phone call in a narrow window and send that all-important SOS everyone has been waiting to see come to fruition. But alas, this finale was far more realistic in nature. Since it really did just feature, a simple turning of the pages. For instance, with the girls at their lowest, it really seemed as though even darker times and acts were going to trigger their exodus from their island. But instead… Gretchen decided… they’d had enough and just rescued them before things went to a true place of concern. As for the boys, well, Seth’s attempt to make nice by showing everyone the boat he swiped from an associate, led to off island violence when he once again went toxic, the kind that simply came to an abrupt end… as did everyone else’s time on their island… when a boat was reached in the middle of the water. Which means there was no pomp and circumstance to be found regarding the two groups exit from the wild, just an ending. A closed chapter and a harrowing beginning to a new one. Because Leah’s phone call… brought down the heat upon Gretchen’s operation, forcing her to move post haste to save her hide. For the authorities would soon be after her and her operation and well… she used that reality to try to move her experiment into a bold new phase. One that saw her and most of her team, head off to a new observation location to see how both groups would handle integration and more isolation. A feat she accomplished, by unlocking the doors and letting everyone out and quietly informing them… they were still stranded, with no hope of rescue once again. Setting the stage for a harrowing new season of storytelling… one where the experiment can go anywhere and that’s terrifying for certain. Since everyone was close to their breaking point before their ‘rescue’. But what matters more here, is that this is a brilliant ending to a brilliant season of storytelling. For in many ways, we were lulled into the belief that this finale would bring this journey to a close. Since rescue and debriefing and that phone call… had to lead to an end that was traditional and epic. One where good triumphed over evil. But instead… the heroes took an L here, in a shockingly realistic manner and kudos to the writers’ room for going this route and reminding us that endings are indeed subjective and hopefully it won’t be long before we learn that a third season of this show is on the way. So, we can see if these two groups can survive more strife and isolation… or if darker times and a more finite ending await them. |
