Over the course of the past few weeks, we’ve been treated to some wonderfully unique storytelling, courtesy of the fascinating decision made by the creative team behind Peacock’s Twisted Metal. For the writer’s room chose to focus primarily on world-building and character development, something the video game franchise didn’t prioritize, and that really has immersed us in this world and prompted us to care about John Doe and his plight, and we even have a fine understanding of what makes the villains tick and what life in this world looks like. But let’s be honest, since this is an adaptation of a violent and wild video game, deep down we’ve all known that eventually… that had to take the center stage. To please the hardcore fans and to genuinely provide a flawless adaptation and well, it turned out that the next episode was the perfect time to make that happen. For ‘CRZSRDS’ saw John and Quiet make their way to the outskirts of Topeka, Kansas and well… rather than be perfectly honest with John about what she had planned for Agent Stone, she opted to knock John out and leave him to fend for himself while she marched into that town, ready to do harm. Which brought about… some wild moments for certain that did the game proud. After of course… offering up some of the trademark character development this series is now known for. Because once Quiet snuck her way into Topeka, under the disguise of one of Stone’s agents, she was forced to really reconcile her brother’s death through an unsettling hallucination and ponder upon, was this really, what she wanted to go through with? Because it became clear, this would put her down a tough path, one that might poison her soul and well… as she inched through Topeka and the hellscape it had become, she committed to her decision, regardless of cost and continued the hunt for Stone, while the depravity of the video game world played out around her. For instance, back in Nevada, the now touring Sweet Tooth Show, arrived at the Hoover Dam and well… a piss poor reception of the wonder that Sweet Tooth had to offer, led to some ultra-violence. The kind where Sweet Tooth whacked almost every one of Stone’s agents in a manner that was horrifyingly theatrical. But seeing as to how it was agents dying in front of desperate people’s eyes, a little head toss of an agent, went a long way with Sweet Tooth’s new audience. For they applauded him and lauded him, and it even allowed for Sweet Tooth to gather up a following since the saved were eager to follow someone so brutal, and Stu’s efforts to join him in a little payback elevated his status to Sweet Tooth’s impromptu second bestie (because no one replaces Harold, that’s why Stu sits bitch in the van), and well… this was definitely the depravity we’ve come to know and love from the game series. Not to mention, poor John had to deal with a greased up, corpse lovin’ dude when he came to and that was also pretty wild. However, while it was incredible to be treated to some nutty moments with Sweet Tooth and his special brand of madness, Quiet’s eventual meeting with Agent Stone, since she was discovered in town, and he opted to handle this matter hands on… brought forth the epic action and adventure we truly love about this particular saga. Because it was just Quiet and Stone, shooting at one another in a broken-down amusement park akin to something straight out of the game and that was… pretty darn epic and amazing. Since it perfectly evoked a sense of nostalgia, and memories of those battles where one fought hard to bring down their foe with a hail of bullets and it also… offered up quite the dramatic ending. Because for a hot minute there, it really seemed as though Agent Stone was going to win the day and end Quiet’s life. But thanks to John’s quick timing, an epic missile, and the power of Hanson’s ‘MMMBop’, he was able to teach Stone a lesson and save Quiet. All of which brought forth, one amazing episode. One that truly leaned into the unhinged nature of the video games and heck yes to that. Because this episode truly captured the bizarre nature of the games, and the explosions we love and hey… let’s be honest… we all wanted more of the darker side of Sweet Tooth, and we got it, and it was dementedly glorious to see it play out and really let the character shine, and it didn’t detract from his journey. Since oddly, ol’ Sweet Tooth is getting the following and wholesomeness he desires. Also… extra body parts to throw around. So. There’s that. But that aside, it was just great that everyone just let loose and had fun and now that Agent Stone appears to be defeated and Quiet is back somewhere safe, it will be interesting to see what awaits John in the Windy City. Until next time. Watch ‘Twisted Metal’

It is definitely safe to say, that Alfred Hitchcock, serves as the father of the psychological melodrama. For up until he hit it big in the 1960s, that kind of story was unheard of. For those two genres were rarely combined in the slightest, for the melodrama really was something designed to set a mood and offer up an emotion and anything psychological in nature in film, really did hold to the human psyche. But Hitchcock really came to realize that combining elements from those two genres in a manner that was intense and artful, could produce something powerful on the silver screen. Something raw, and visceral, that could entertain and wow and keep the audience guessing as to what was going on, and that gave rise to real classics, and a new type of film that remains with us to this day. The kind that explored dark corners of the human psyche and took us for a ride and, well, the majesty of this subgenre and what it can accomplish is top of mind today, because it took the center stage in the next episode of The Afterparty on Apple TV+. For ‘Isabel’ was a story that saw the matriarch of this family, speak to how Grace was innocent because she knew the true killer of her son. But in order to properly explore the truth about how Edgar died on that night… we needed to understand Isabel’s plight and journey, and that… allowed for a Hitchcockian story to come to life. One grounded in sorrow and heartache since Isabel’s tale began… when her husband’s life ended. Which was a moment that broke her deeply and left her in a pained place and rightfully so. For she was grieving and truly, she needed support and it seemed for a time that Edgar and Hannah were going to give her that support. Since they invited her into their home and gave her great care and well… that’s when a powerful concern came about regarding Isabel. Because she wasn’t sleeping well, and she was engaging in erratic behavior and well… that left her wondering if by chance… her mind was slipping away because of the power of grief. After all, she had not shed many tears, nor had she really faced the pain and the mistakes she was making leading up to and at the wedding, had her deeply worried that this was it, that her mind was gone forever, and she was going to be put under psychiatric care. But some odd behavior from her son, and the belief that she was too strong to lose her mind, prompted her to carefully look at her situation, and come to realize that dear Edgar… wasn’t the son she remembered. No instead, he was toying with her, trying to get her to commit to a bit, really, so that he could take her money and use it for his own purposes and well… she was right. Since she eventually found proof that he was messing with her, and of course… we already knew that Edgar was doing nefarious things with money to launch his budding crypto business. So… that brought forth a hard choice on mom’s part. For at the reception, she not only told her son what she knew, long after she read the lyrics to ‘Mmmbop’ to the crowd… but she switched cake slices when Edgar offered her some. For she truly thought… she was to die on this night of poison and since her son did, she was the one that killed Edgar. Which was… a powerful story to say the least, one that truly captured the majesty of Hitchcock’s work and the wonder of the genre. Since we were privy to the stunning and jarring visuals that Hitchcock made use of, and of course, the story fit the mold nicely as well. Since it was full of twists and turns and epic revelations that took our breath away, and it even featured an amazing visual shout out to Hitchcock himself, and this episode reminded us why we love this subgenre. Because it truly celebrated the best parts of it, and it truly felt akin to a classic Hitchcock story, and that made this episode fun and exciting and the jokes worked too, and of course… it made sure to save its best surprises for the very end of the episode. Since we also came to discover, that Isabel was wrong, she could not have killed her son because of the timeline, and well… as an added stunner, the police have arrived (led by Martin Mull as the Sheriff), and once again Grace is in the crosshairs of the investigation because Isabel felt the need to turn the tables upon her yet again. Which means… we still haven’t a clue who did it, we only know that Zoë has been the only person missing from these stories and well… with the police on site and with one episode left… we will definitely be counting down the minutes to next Wednesday. To learn at last… who killed Edgar and why. Until next time. Watch ‘The Afterparty’

One particular aspect of the Star Wars Universe that is genuinely fascinating through and through, is how the films and the shows often explore the shattered interpersonal relationships amongst the heroes, and how they are to be repaired. Which is fascinating simply because, you don’t see that kind of exploration all that often in popular media. Instead, you see such matters resolved quickly to show the value of friendship or you see it become a devastating growth point. But in the SWU, reuniting with old friends and people that matter is commonplace, as is seeing how exactly to repair the damage done to an old friendship and never was that more evident than during this week’s episode of Ahsoka, on Disney+. Simply because, ‘Part Three: Time to Fly’, spent a lot of time reflecting upon the past. Courtesy of Sabine and Lady Ahsoka. For while they were en route to the Deneb system, they had nothing but time. Time to think upon where their journeys had taken them and time to think upon how perhaps they could indeed reconcile and move forward. Which brought forth some unique sequences for certain. The kind that featured openness and honesty from this duo, and changes in how they approached one another. To signify that they wanted to properly move forward as master and apprentice and truly learn from one another and that was… magnificent to watch. Since it featured a solid lesson for the audience, one that informed us that we must be open to change and open to embracing the uniqueness of others… since that is the only way forward in this life, and it just so happened there were more powerful moments in this vein as this episode continued along. For Hera was back in orbit around Coruscant to plead with the Senate to send a support fleet to Deneb to ensure that no Remnant or surprises would befall the New Republic and well, that brought forth a grand exploration of Hera’s past and its impact upon her very psyche. Giving rise to a sequence that hinted at a bit of PTSD for this former hero of the war, and it also served as a fine reminder… of the many mistakes made by the New Republic in its infancy. Since the request was denied, out of the belief that there was an invincibility surrounding the Republic, and one can definitely infer that particular attitude helped to foster the rise and the power of the First Order. But that aside, this really was a poignant and important sequence, one that also made sure to feature Jacen, and that not only served as another call out to Hera’s adventures, but as a reminder of what she’s fighting for in this new and bold era in the galaxy’s history. However, while it was lovely and powerful to see such moments play out in this story and reinforce the wonder of what this Universe has made a focus… there was trademark action and adventure to be found here as well, courtesy of the arrival at Deneb. For Morgan and Shin Hati were expecting company and did their best to make life difficult for our heroes. Which brought forth some engaging and intense action sequences. Where Sabine found her groove once more and where Ahsoka, did something amazing things in the depths of zero gravity. Since she went out into the void to deflect laser fire and drop a fighter with her lightsabers, and that… was just freakin’ amazing… and as epic as it gets and well, the damage done to the ship here… set the stage for a showdown on the planet’s surface. For they had to put down once the fighting was over, and Skoll became aware of everyone’s presence. But before we worry about that, we get to celebrate one amazing episode. One that offered so much in a such a short time. Because it isn’t every day you receive examinations regarding how to repair interpersonal relationships, alongside observations about trauma and the power of the past with some action and adventure peppered in. But that’s what we enjoyed over the course of half an hour, and it was glorious. For we really were treated to a thoughtful and breathtaking story. One likely designed to handle the echoes of the past now before things get far more serious. After all, the gateway is indeed nearing completion and dark forces are inching closer and closer to bringing Thrawn back to this galaxy, and it won’t be long now… before the fight to save this galaxy resumes in an epic manner. Until next time. Watch ‘Ahsoka’

One of the best aspects of the technological and entertainment revolution we are currently living through, is the unprecedented access we are privy to when it comes to storytelling. For social media allows for us to reach out to authors we admire and say hello, and the same goes for celebrities and other storytellers we admire… and they often say hi back. For technology and our love of entertainment has broken down barriers, and on the flip side… it has done wonders for folks that create as well. Since they can reach the masses if they need to make something known about their work or the work of others… and they can also, provide us with amazing insight regarding their work. In fact, anytime we can hear about behind the scenes stuff from a creative we admire… we are beyond happy. Because we love coming to know how the sausage is made and what amazing stories and insights those creatives can send our way and well… that access is top of mind today, courtesy of a lovely gift from Apple TV+. For earlier, the network decided… to be the host of that which we love by giving LaKeith Stanfield and Clark Backo, a behind the scenes vignette regarding their upcoming series, The Changeling. Which is wonderful to say the least, since so many of us want to know more about this series and its deeper meaning and beyond, and well, Apple TV+ was kind enough to provide us with that vignette to share with all of you, to help you learn more about this fascinating series as we inch toward its release. ‘Apple TV+ is excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming eight part drama series, “The Changeling,” with star and executive producer LaKeith Stanfield (“Atlanta,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “The Harder They Fall”) and co-star Clark Backo (“Letterkenny,” “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Station Eleven”). Based on the acclaimed best-selling book of the same name by Victor LaValle, “The Changeling'' will make its global debut with three episodes on Friday, September 8, 2023 on Apple TV+, followed by one episode weekly through October 13. “The Changeling'' is a fairytale for grown-ups. A horror story, a parenthood fable and a perilous odyssey through a New York City you didn’t know existed. In addition to Stanfield and Backo, the series stars Adina Porter, Samuel T. Herring, Alexis Louder, Jared Abrahamson, and special guest star Malcolm Barrett. The series was written and adapted by Kelly Marcel (“Cruella,” “Venom,” “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”), who also served as showrunner and executive producer, and directed and executive produced by Melina Matsoukas (“Queen & Slim,” “Insecure”). The series is produced by Apple Studios and Annapurna. Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, Patrick Chu and Ali Krug are executive producers on behalf of Annapurna. Matsoukas is an executive producer through her De La Revolution Films, and Khaliah Neal is a co-executive producer.’ Written by John Edward Betancourt

There are a great many elements that go into assembling a great mystery/thriller. For starters, the mystery in question needs to be deep and compelling, and filled with so many questions that we have no choice but to follow the story to have the answers we seek. Plus, it should indeed thrill us and have high stakes that put us on the edge of our seats. Because it is always fun to go on an emotional ride in an emotional manner with characters we care about. And speaking of the characters, that is the last true element that matters when it comes to creating a magnificent mystery/thriller. Because we need to connect with the characters and care about them and root for them every single step of the way and well, that is why the Prime Video series, Harlan Coben’s Shelter is of note. Because it checks off every box on that checklist, since it has us hooked on the mystery surrounding Mickey Bolitar’s family and friends, and of course… we are indeed worried about his safety and the safety of those that have gone missing. And it just so happens that the next episode in this saga, handled the character aspect of that checklist, splendidly. For shortly after Spoon and Mickey were released from jail in ‘Catch Me If U Can’, Mickey received some outright stunning news. In that, his mother was ready to be released from the mental health facility she was staying within, and that meant… Mickey could finally spend time with her, and heal with her, and for a time… it seemed as though that was going to be the case. Because mom left the facility feeling great and filled with a positive outlook on life, but it didn’t take long for that… to take a hard turn. For not long after she stepped away from that place of healing, did she more or less… disappear from the world, which put Mickey and his aunt into an outright panic and left them searching hard for her, and they found her eventually. Broken down and crying and well… that entire sequence really did allow for us to care about Mickey deeply and understand his plight and what’s at stake for him here. Because he desperately wants a family life, and he is now the glue holding everything together, and there is a lot or us to relate to there. Since we’ve seen our parents stumble and falter, and we are the ones that have had to prop them up and stay strong ourselves, and it was powerful to watch that play out, and wonderful to know the good that Mickey harbors in his heart, for that will serve him well in the weeks to come as evil looks to do damage. Speaking of evil, we would be remiss to not point out that it was active and moving in this story, and the mystery continued to build in this tale. Courtesy of the fact that Ema came to learn that there was something quite amiss with her tattoo, and it would seem that the artist responsible for it, knows more than he led on here. Not to mention, Bat Lady’s twisted little henchman worked hard in this story to learn everything possible about Mickey, to the point where breaking and entering and outright stalking became part of the plan to make that happen. And of course, we learned a lot more about who might be responsible for the kidnapping that started this downward spiral, since we were introduced to the Octopus Man, and we also came to learn that he is not a man to be trifled with in the slightest. All of which served to offer balance to this story, so that we had the perfect combination of creepy and bittersweet and that brought forth, one quality tale. One that was brisk, engaging, and informed us of the fact that this series will indeed be a great mystery/thriller. Because we simply cannot look away, and the mystery continues to grow in all the right (or wrong) ways. But what matters more here, is that the characters were indeed the focus, and we truly were able to learn so much about Mickey and what drives him, and we did also see this universe expand upon Spoon and Ema as well, and even some of Mickey’s classmates. Since that helped us to see that the town Sheriff has some issues, and a past he is struggling with and that may indeed tie into the grand mystery that lurks in this town, and it will be interesting to see what other tidbits and character moments await us as our journey through this eerie world continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘Harlan Coben’s Shelter’
