‘The Split’ Recap: ‘Season 3, Episode 3’

What comes next, is a question that we often associate with supremely dark times in our lives. For those ugly days upend everything to the point where we are dying to know how we are either going to start over or face the next wave of strife. But the fact of the matter is, that is a question that is applicable to far more than just the worst of times. It is something that we can absolutely apply to important new chapters in our lives, especially when relationships end. Because it helps us to look ahead and ponder upon what will change without a particular lover in our lives and it is that very question that is explored in the next episode of The Split on Sundance Now. For when we catch up with everyone here, it’s obvious that a lot of what these characters want relationship wise, is no longer possible. So, like it or not, looking at what comes next and exploring it is the only logical course of action.

Which in Rose’s case, involved figuring out what parts of the past she wanted to carry into tomorrow regarding her lost love. For she knew that moving on was what was next for her, and that motivated her to hastily push forward and remove everything that reminded her of James initially, thinking a clean break was the right way to handle it. But it didn’t take long for her to realize, that she needed something of substance, some kind of memory, and with the firm’s help… since she did donate most of his stuff and was told she couldn’t have it back… she reclaimed what she needed and realized that she should in fact, take a little time on such matters. Just to fully understand what would make her whole as the days moved along. Which was a plot thread that once again put realism on display since so many of us have or will struggle with what we keep from yesterday when a relationship ends in any capacity so we can embrace what comes next without something heavy hanging over us and cherish what that partner taught us. 

But of course, Rose wasn’t the only one exploring this question, Hannah was of course… in on this as well. But her path to what comes next, was a touch more complex. Because for some time she was just pining over her lost love and was of course, butting heads with Kate at every turn. Which included stepping in when their cases crossed paths and of course… fighting with Nathan over the fact that Kate was continuing to be quickly integrated into the family’s life, in the hopes of seemingly making her a new matriarch of sorts. A move cemented by Nathan hosting Kate for dinner with the kids. A choice that proved to be disastrous, since Olivia was able to figure out that Kate was pregnant and did not respond to it well. But what matters more here, is that being surrounded by this, finally helped Hannah to realize that there was no going back and to focus on what was next.

Which for her, involved rekindling an old flame. For Christie returned to London after a stint in New York and he hadn’t returned home just for the sake of being around familiar places and people. He straight up missed Hannah and made no bones about informing her of such and his hope was that she would take a chance on them once again and see where their love might take them at last since she was clearly available again. And when faced with the reality that Nathan was indeed moving on, she decided she had nothing to lose and that what might come next, was a second chance at a missed opportunity. Which in turn, led Hannah to Christie’s hotel room and a night of much needed passion and desire. A move that reminds us, that sometimes what comes next, is doing our best to let go and just see where potential romance can take us.

If anything, it seems more and more that this final season of the series, is preparing everyone here for the next chapter in their lives. Since so many of the moments explored thus far, speak to closure and endings and tomorrow and well… that’s allowing for a powerful season of storytelling to take place. One that is helping us to say goodbye to three seasons of brilliance. The kind that may wrap up in a manner as bittersweet and realistic as what we examined here. Since all of this, felt as though we were simply living alongside these characters and were able to learn about actions that all of us take part in. Since figuring out a way forward when a loved one dies is part of the human condition, as is learning our value again and reconciling the end of what we thought was a great love and well, with only three episodes left in this saga, it is definitely safe to say we are all eager to see, where this incredible story is going to take us before we have to bid farewell to its amazing ruminations upon love and life and everything in between.
