Empowerment is a concept that does a great deal for us and rightfully so. Because when one understands its meaning and abides by its teachings… wonders begin to happen in our lives. For we begin to take control of situations we thought were pure chaos and we do so with bravery and determination in our hearts and when we find success in taking the reins of one chaotic situation… it doesn’t take long for us to go after another… until we finally find the peace and stability we so desperately crave in life. If anything, the progressive nature of empowerment because of its teachings, is top of mind today… simply because Adam Kay made it his mantra in the next episode of This Is Going to Hurt on AMC+. For when we catch up with him here, he’s stunned over the fact that his personal life was finally in check and that empowered him… to grow a life outside of the hospital walls. To the point where he left work on time for a change and worked to spend time with his fiancé and learn how to enjoy life a little bit again. Which was an adjustment for certain, since clearly… it has been a while since he’s engaged in small talk that doesn’t involve guts and gore and babies in general. But empowerment didn’t let Adam take a step back in such matters and after that little adjustment period, he found joy in life, and with his home life continuing to come to a peaceful and joyful place, the power of empowerment… motivated Adam, to take control of life at work. Which could not have come at a better time. Since Tracy decided it was high time to bust some chops in the ward, starting with Adam. And that involved going after his skill set and ripping on him and banishing him whenever necessary and to complicate matters further, Dr. Lockhart opted to basically… change his statement and make Adam look the fool… a move that truly left Adam beside himself and frustrated and rightfully so. Because this was a lot to process, but he didn’t dwell on it all for too long before deciding to find a way to make work as comfortable and peaceful as can be. Which in this instance, involved a couple of bold moves on Adam’s part. One of which was spur of the moment, while the other was quite calculated. In that, he flat out confronted Erika about the complaint and threw in a little manipulation to get it dropped and once he learned it was Erika’s sister behind it, he confronted her too and tried to appeal to her humanity and well, when that didn’t take… it was indeed that aforementioned moment, and control over his own emotions that allowed for work to become a safe space for Adam at last. For he was forced to save a life and deliver a baby in a dangerous and risky manner. But he had to take a chance and in doing so, he saved two lives and fought through his doubt and well… that level of bravery and the decision to seize the moment and take control of all things internal… motivated Erika’s sister to drop that complaint and it got Tracy off of his back, and helped him to understand he is good at this and deserves to be here and his day ended at last, with peace and control. If anything, this was a mostly inspirational episode when all is said and done. Largely because it reminds us to be bold and to empower ourselves and take control wherever we can. Because there is a lot more that we can control in this life than we know… so why not go for it and see what happens? But all lessons aside, it was also amazing to watch Adam embrace that lesson and execute it and see nothing, but reward come his way and that kind of growth is beautiful for certain. But there was mention of the fact that not every moment here was uplifting and wonderful, and we’d be foolish to not talk about that darker stuff. Since Shruti struggled mightily in this tale to find inspiration and joy in her job and that seems to have her a crossroads, one where she must decide if she wants this or not and that realistic nugget, does leave one to wonder… if this exploration in empowerment is also fleeting, since life is full of ups and downs and well… the only way to find out for sure, is to tune in next week and see where this journey takes us next. Until then.
