Written by: ScottyI'm not sure I can find any other way to say this, but I feel like I am home at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado. And I am by far not the only one that says something crazy as this, it is Monday night and there are people galore roaming around the estate. It has been years since my last visit to this majestic venue and I must say that I will not let that much time go between my next visit.
What is the reason that people are drawn to such a place? Could it be the history of the hotel? Could it be all of the people that have visited the hotel since it opened in 1909? Could it be the seclusion of the venue with nothing but great views all the way around? Could it be that Stephen King stayed here and wrote The Shining? Or could it be the haunting around the estate? The answer is different for everyone. My first visit to the Stanley hotel came back when I was eight years old. My family was always into upper class dining along with high tea on mother’s day. If I would have known then what I know now, I would have begged my family to keep these trips going every year, other than moving down to the Broadmoor, for they had a better buffet. I do remember one of the trips however and my father asking if there was anything interesting about the hotel that should be shared with the table. Our waiter told us that even though he was alone one night, there was someone helping him close down the restaurant. That is what sparked my interest in this hotel. The hauntings along with one of my favorite movies being based on this very place. I will admit, I love the movie The Shining. For some strange reason it seems to sit well with me. Could it be that I am a little bit crazy? Well yeah, but let’s not tell anyone about that. I love that a place can get a positive reputation for being haunted. I am a believer in the afterlife and have seen and heard some things that would make your head spin, although it was just growing up for me. So I digress, back to the allure of the Stanley Hotel. If you want to feel something new and something different, this is place to stay. My last visit was back when I was twenty three years old and I actually got to stay the night. It was nothing short of amazing. I slept like a baby and that never happens to me. One of the greatest things about not knowing what to expect is the unexpected. Well, it has been ten years and I am back. I love the feel of this place, it always delivers even when you are not expecting it to. This time I will be here for at least two nights to make sure I am able to take it all in. Not looking forward to the drive home when the time finally comes. Not looking to the future and living in the present right now. I will sit back and just enjoy. Plus, they have their own channel dedicated to the hotel and The Shining is on consistent repeat, this is just heaven. See you soon….hopefully. After all...all work and no play make Scotty a dull boy.
