The Tomorrow People Recap: Kill or Be Killed

Do you ever sit and watch a show and thing to yourself, "huh, this couldn't get more complicated, surely." That's how I felt when I watched this week's The Tomorrow People. And let me tell you, I was proven wrong. I have to say, whoever's writing the script is doing an amazing job with character development, because, wow. Just. Wow.

So, this week we get a look into John's background; what makes him tick; why is he so reclusive; what's his story? I thought it couldn't get any sadder after we learned last week about Cara. I was wrong, for the second time in a one night! New record! It turns out, things can get sadder and they do. We all knew John had worked for Ultra at one point. We just didn't know the mechanics behind any of it. John, like many of the Tomorrow People, didn't come from such a good life. He had it worse off than Cara. There was no loving parent in his life. Instead he was a foster kid. One that had to steal food to feed the other foster kids. Foster dad seemed to be pretty abusive with no remorse whatsoever. That is, until Jed shows up, offers the man an undisclosed lump sum of money, and takes John away.

All seems well and dandy. Then we flash back to present day. Stephen's mom is lecturing him about working for his uncle Jed. She demands he be invited over for dinner. Stephen brings this to Jed's attention and is shot down. Jed gets in his car and makes to leave, but there's a small problem. A fire has started under his car. Stephen teleports into the car, grabs Jed, and gets him out before the car explodes. Who could possibly attempt to kill Jed? Aside from, you know, anyone because he's kind of a buttface and likes killing people. It turns out an old pupil of Jed's, Killian McCrane, is back. Killian's different than other Tomorrow People…he can kill. How? Why? What! Everything we've been told so far is a lie? Not quite.

Killian, as it turns out, isn't after Jed, he's after John. Why? Because they both worked at Ultra. That is, until Killian went AWOL and left. John was sent to track him down; until he ran from the company too. Killian's been going through cities, setting buildings on fire, and killing innocent people. All to get John's attention. Now that he's back in town, they have to find a way to stop him. Stephen helps John track Killian down to some building, that's right next to a youth group building, which is filled with kids when they show up. Killian kicks both their butts and leaves. John has to disable 6 bombs, simultaneously, BOOM! Thankfully he has Stephen's help…well….kinda. John manages to disable all 6 bombs and save the day.

Stephen leaves to have dinner with Jed and his mom…which is about as awkward as it sounds. Mom seems to know more than she's letting on. Hinting at her possibly knowing about the Tomorrow People, or maybe knowing exactly what Ultra really is. Jed tells Stephen he wants to meet John and form a plan to take down Killian. And that meeting is even more awkward than the dinner, if that's possible. We find out that John had tried running away from Ultra as a kid, and going back to his Foster father. Foster dad, however, has a bit of a problem with that and starts kicking the crap out of John, until John unleashes his powers on the man. For a moment we're left thinking that there is hope in this world. But, alas, no dice. Foster dad's fat and big and gets the upper hand. He's about to beat John to death when there's a gunshot. Jed came back and inadvertently saves John's life. Which explains why John feels the need to help Jed when he asks for it. 

Just know, that Jed's actor, Mark Pellegrino, played Lucifer on Supernatural, and thus, should never be trusted. Jed finds Killian and tells John where he is, through the use of Stephen's telepathy. John confronts Killian, the two start having it out in a parking garage (those are seriously creepy) and all seems like Killian might actually beat John. Jed sees this as an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone and sends in Alpha Squad (the killing team) to take both targets out. John doesn't like being interrupted, so he takes Killian and teleports them somewhere more grassy and private. Killian, though, was always a better fighter. John's soon on his back and about to be killed by Killian…until John pulls out a gun and fires. Killian dies and we learn that John has had the ability to kill all along.

Again, wait, what? How's that even possible? John's said all along that Jed's company has been experimenting on their kind. The Tomorrow People are genetically incapable of killing anything. Or, they were. Jed managed to fix that little snag in their DNA, enabling Killian and John to kill. How many more like them are there? Nobody knows.

John returns back to the group with none of them the wiser. Jed and John are the only ones who know what happened and John decides its time Jed knew that he and the rest of the Tomorrow People were done hiding. An all out war is declared between the two.

Because in the end. It's kill or be killed.
