When we last settled in to discuss the fascinating new NBC series, Suits LA, we talked at length about how the show did an amazing job of setting the stage for a grand exploration of how we reinvent ourselves. For Ted Black had not started the work to really make that happen, and became a version of himself he did not like. To the point where he nearly lost his practice and everything, he holds dear and that prompted him, to think upon healing and real reinvention. Wherein hard work would go into making his revamped firm the true toast of the town and bring him peace in the process. Which left all of us wondering, how quickly the show would lean into such matters, since not every series out there gets to it right away. Especially when they have a bevy of episodes ahead of them. But as it turned out, this week’s tale wasted little time in exploring, the process of reinvention. Of what we have to do atone for our sins and become something new and ‘Old Man Hanrahan’ kicked off that exploration by having Ted lean into his memories and learn from them. Since we came to learn that he had no qualms back in the day of leaning into lies to make a case happen. For when the big case that sent him west began to fall to pieces, he used an impersonator/comedian to help in an interrogation to garner more evidence against his target. A move that went over poorly with Samantha, and of course, spoke to the man he once was. In that, he was willing to do whatever necessary to win and that never goes well. Which meant, in present day, the first step to his reinvention was figuring out how to play defender, the honest way. For Lester’s case was a mess, plain and simple, and the District Attorney’s office was going after it with gusto because this was that grand opportunity to close up a high-profile case. Which pushed Ted to work with Kevin closely to look at the facts and really explore whether or not his client was guilty. As it turned out, going this route was quite helpful. Since Lester did open up and start to discuss the truth about what happened, with a measure of honesty that took some scrutiny off of his actions. Not enough mind you, but it was an improvement, and it was enough, to push Ted to keep moving forward with the case, with an ally no less. ![]()
Since we came to learn that Amanda had a vested interest in this case. Simply because she came to her corner up the upper level, and picked that out of the way office space, to just keep clear of past cases and problems that came about from them. And coming to learn that the very prosecutor that helped put Amanda away from the world, was going after Lester, prompted her to step in and aid Ted. But what mattered more in this instance, was the fact that Ted has indeed learned from his mistakes and was eager to finally do the right thing, win or lose. Which was a lovely way to explore the process of reinvention, and the lessons did not end with Ted’s journey here. Since Erica also came to understand the importance of reinvention.
After all, she was now the head of entertainment, and it was up to her to reinvent how the firm handled its clients there and sadly, that mission was met with mixed results. Because despite Leah’s help, she got into a battle with Rick. For Stuart’s new firm was eager to rip away Ted’s biggest client to stake their own claim and sadly, they were able to. Thanks to Rick’s keen eye and outright care for the client. All of which taught Erica, it is not enough to will oneself into a role, one must reinvent themselves. So, she asked Leah to help her learn the ins and outs of television and film, to become versed in popular media and to better understand the business, and she also came to realize she could no longer react on an emotional level to those she has been close with. She simply had to reinvent herself as a knowledgeable and formidable lawyer that no one would want to cross. All of which made, for a lovely episode through and through. Since this one had it all, really. Since the depth was present through Ted’s journey here. One that was emotional and professional all at once and really showcased how he is trying to transform himself into something and someone more. Plus, as expected, this series plunged us into the high stakes’ world of Hollywood, and all the legal stuff that stars and studios, and everyone in between, must navigate to make movies and shows. With some of that trademark Suits spice thrown in for good measure. Since we did get some lovely back and forth, courtesy of Erica and Rick’s little battle royale, and well, all this does is leave us eager for more. Since this show is hitting all the right notes, and we are now eager to see these fine folks grow into new versions of themselves. Until next time. Watch ‘Suits LA’
