Over the course of the past couple of weeks, we’ve talked at length about how the WE tv series, Kold x Windy, has done a phenomenal job of offering up a realistic look at the process of chasing one’s dream. Simply because this series has held nothing back in pointing out that the chase is quite the difficult affair, one wrought with tough decisions and setbacks and moments of doubt, and some shocking epiphanies regarding the nature of change and how hard that can be to embrace in the midst of our pursuit. And that’s important to point out because this series is clearly not going to let up on such matters in the slightest. For it truly wants to explore every single aspect and moment that really comes with chasing our dreams as evidenced by last night’s episode. Because what we often forget about the chase and what is rarely portrayed on screen or in print regarding it… is the large amount of downtime that accompanies the chase. Because it isn’t some intense pursuit that burns every waking moment of our lives. There’s a lot of life we have to live in between meetings that give us hope or moments that tell us we’re on the right track. Not to mention, there are still bills to pay and day jobs to work in between the disappointments and that is why ‘We Got Ops!’ is such a brilliant tale. Because that is precisely what this particular episode focuses upon, the downtime and life that happens in between the big moments, and it accomplished that feat, by having Malika and Renee enjoy a little quiet for a change. For there wasn’t much going on with their careers as the moment, aside from their manager making a push to have them work with a local Chicago influencer and that allowed for the two of them to just… live and deal with all the ups and down that life has to offer. For Renee, that involved having the past come back to haunt her, since her soul was shaken and disturbed by the dark act she committed upon that innocent young girl. To the point where she was abusing whatever drugs she could to clear her mind. A move that put her life at risk since she did find herself in the hospital at one point. But trauma runs deep, as does guilt, and really, Renee’s story here was designed to explore how life isn’t always rosy and that we do reap what we sow, and it will be interesting to see how she handles this down the line since it is genuinely eating at her through and through. As for Malika, her journey was a touch more on the positive side and spoke to how life and downtime can help focus us as to what we really want out of life and our dream. Which for her involves having a stable relationship with someone that truly values her and cherishes her, as evidenced by how she and Marlon click and how she views him. Plus, the rash of accelerated violence in her town, which many attributed to Drill Music, began to leave her wondering what kind of artist she wanted to be. All of which gave us incredible insight into what Malika wants her future to look like and it was fascinating to learn how eager she is to hone her craft and embrace family life. Something that was reinforced by the heartbreaking interaction with her son in this tale, and this too… will be interesting to follow in the weeks to come since it, and other factors could lead to real conflict for the band. Because in addition to the possibility of a clash over direction and desire, the police continue to inch closer and closer toward Kold and Windy. To the point where they’ve even infiltrated their inner circle with informants to bring justice to the streets. Putting this duo on a timer regarding change and focus and that too, motivates us to continue to the journey. But before we see what comes next, we can in fact… celebrate another brilliant tale. One that really did showcase an aspect of chasing one’s dream that is so rarely discussed this exploration almost felt utterly original in nature. But life is full of surprises, and we should talk about this stuff more, since this is the stuff that defines an artist, and this show deserves a round of applause for going this route with the story. Since it added honesty and depth to an already raw and dynamic story. Until next time.
