It is definitely safe to say, that the first couple of episodes of Chloe on Prime Video, have been nothing short of a masterclass exploration regarding the dangers of obsession. For we’ve watched Becky Green quickly succumb to its powers and lose herself in the process, giving rise to all kinds of stressful and traumatic moments as she works to maintain her faux persona as Sasha and let’s be honest… the performances and the circumstances surrounding said obsession, could easily captivate the audience for the rest of the season. Because Erin Doherty is simply killing it as Becky and selling the pain of her character in an earnest manner and watching this obsession slowly break her apart is a powerful and compelling ride. But writer/director/creator Alice Seabright’s vision regarding this story, extends well beyond simply presenting obsessions dangers and pratfalls. For as she cited in an interview with NTG recently, she wanted to explore more than just the dangers here. She outright wanted to know what really drives people to make these decisions and that is quite important to our discussion today, simply because the next episode in this harrowing journey dives deep into that. Which might take some by surprise, since we already had an understanding that Becky’s world was sour to begin with and this push to be Sasha was part of simply wanting to escape that blasé world and the lack of stimulation that it provided her with. But ‘The Holy Trinity’ is an episode that was indeed able to expand further on such matters and properly explore why a person would risk so much to be take part in a fantasy world and it accomplished that particular feat by basically, having Becky’s fantasy life begin to crumble. Because she lost her job in this story for making the fantasy a priority and that rattled her since it cut off funding for the various dinners and social events that brought her joy and… her affair with Elliot was revealed unto the world. A move that immediately shattered her fragile mental standing and left her beside herself. To the point where she retreated back home with her mother, who was also in dire straits in this tale and that’s really when we came to understand why Becky was continuing to subject herself to this wanton torture. Which as it turned out, related to the fact that her life with her mother… was in fact, emotionally and mentally devastating. Since she was in essence, watching her mother slip away and of course, those random callbacks to yesterday from mom, brought up difficult and heartbreaking memories. Such as how Sasha is a name that Becky is familiar with, since it was the name of her late sister and well, taking the time to go this route and teach us that Becky was genuinely living in a world of mental strife so devastating that she felt the only way to escape it was through lying and creating a new world, was brilliant for certain. Since it takes an act, we oft view as malicious and manipulative, and humanizes it in a manner where we fully understand it and still don’t have to condone it in the slightest. For regardless of why Becky is eager to escape, this isn’t healthy in the slightest. But it is the only recourse she believes she has, and the show deserves a round of applause for this deep dive into such acts and for also… finding a way to continue to push forward the mystery surrounding Chloe’s passing. Since we continued to get more insight into her life and how it might not have been as rosy as others believed. For there were hints of an affair with Richard and strife... and it will be interesting to see if the truth about Chloe will either push Becky to finally leave this fantasy life behind and sort out her own or if by chance… it will somehow motivate her to immerse herself further within it. In a twisted effort to obtain a demented fresh start/tribute to the fallen through treachery and lies. Until next time.
