We are taught from a very early age that bullies are nothing but a temporary problem in life. For these sour individuals should eventually grow out of their nastiness when they get into the world and learn that it doesn’t reward that kind of behavior. So, we should pay them no mind and go about our lives, and we follow that lesson to a tee, only to learn… it’s wrong. For in adulthood, we come to learn that bullies are still around, and they’re emboldened and strong as adults and use new tools to exert power over others. All of which leaves us wondering… how then do we fight that which seems eternal? Well, that is a question that the next episode of When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark Channel opted to answer. Because ‘Through the Valley’ saw the situation with AJ McGinty come to a head. For an attempt to relax the lawsuit he was pushing for, backfired horribly. Since he demanded restitution for Allie’s ‘trespass’ upon his property and he flexed his muscles hard to ensure that he would get the farmland he wanted and anything else he wanted. All of which was classic bully behavior, and that immediately allowed for the show to dive into how we deal with them in adulthood, after of course… initial fears and sorrow for mistakes settled down in Hope Valley. For there was real remorse from Allie over stepping into that land. But thanks to Oliver, there was hope. Since he spoke to some fine policework that would allow for the town to basically flip the script on AJ. Because he illegally used trees from other properties to create what he wanted farmland wise, and well… that allowed for Bill to put together a beautiful package of lawsuits and charges that would potentially ruin AJ… or he could simply stop being a bully and let people live. The latter of which he agreed to. and that taught us, you just have to offer a bully the same energy back to teach them a lesson in adulthood. Because tit for tat is all they know. But while that made for a fine lesson for certain, one that we can indeed apply until we figure out how to properly handle bullying in our world, life went on in Hope Valley, in a bittersweet way. For there was a lovely Hazelnut harvest for the town to enjoy, Elizabeth was able to help Emily find her way during a tough time, and Rosemary received a bit of a humbling when it came to the law. Since the return of Georgie made it clear that she cannot always have what she wants when she wants, and to rely on her skills as a journalist when she’s in need of that quick fix for information. Plus, we also learned that Georgie and Bill have real chemistry and if the opportunity ever arrives, they would outright be a thing. As for the bittersweet stuff, well that came about via Jack. Simply because he was unwell here and deeply scared both Elizabeth and Nathan, to the point where doctors needed to intervene and soon everyone learned, that Jack has diabetes. Which in this era was a huge deal and could easily lead to trouble down the line. All of which sets the stage for a different kind of finale to the season. One where life’s unpleasant surprises come into play and Elizabeth will have to learn how to navigate such matters. But before we ponder deeper on that, we can celebrate a solid story. One that reminds us that we don’t necessarily have to beat the hell out of a bully to teach them a lesson, we just need to stand tall, and now that the lesson is in hand, it’s onto a tough future for Elizabeth and her son. In an era where treating diabetes was no easy task. Until next time. Watch ‘When Calls the Heart’
