‘The Split’ Recap: ‘Season 3, Episode 4’

Thus far, the third and final season of The Split on Sundance Now, has been nothing short of a powerful examination of what comes next when a relationship ends. Since it has presented to us in great detail, what the grieving process looks like when a relationship ends and what motivates us to move on when that is the case and that has made for some fascinating and powerful television. The kind that has also been quite realistic in nature and compelling every step of the way, since this kind of honest examination regarding love is rare to find in the television landscape. But while we’ve enjoyed every single second of this incredible exploration, it has at the same time… put some important plot points on the back burner.

After all, Zander’s husband, Tyler… has been sleeping with Nina and has initiated discussions about leaving Zander for her. Plus, Leonora has been fighting tooth and nail to divorce her husband, out of the fact that she is slowly dying from a horrible disease and wants to spare everyone from watching her die slowly, and well… those are compelling storylines that deserve their day in the sun and thankfully, the writer’s room agrees on that. For the next episode in this fascinating series, takes the time to explore those two plot lines further and their significance to the story overall and well… each of them exploded into some powerful moments for certain. The kind that more or less left Zander beside himself. 

For learning the truth about his sister was devastating for him for certain since he now had to reconcile the reality that he was on borrowed time with her, and that was tear jerking to say the least. But at last, the truth was out and now it can be dealt with from Zander’s perspective emotionally, and it was great that the show took the time to finally give something this important its day in the sun and well, once Zander got to work on processing that, he was slammed with more troubles regarding Tyler. The kind that went beyond the affair that Zander already knew about. For it was revealed in this tale, that Tyler is not at all who he appears or claims to be in the slightest. In fact, Tyler is nothing more than a thieving scoundrel. 

Because it was revealed to Zander that his husband is married to someone else that he has a habit of jumping from marriage to marriage in an effort to clear out bank accounts and enjoy the good life from that money. Which of course brought forth an intense confrontation between Zander and Tyler, wherein the relationship came to an end and an ultimatum was presented for Tyler to do the right thing this time around. An act that he quickly ignored. Because despite having Zander’s accounts frozen in an effort to stop Tyler from robbing him and to keep him from skipping town, Tyler had a backup plan to execute another robbery, by way of Nina. Because he kept sweet-talking her and promising her the world and…. he even got access to her accounts via the contract for a house they were going to ‘buy’ together.

Which means it is only a matter of time before heartbreak comes into play because you know he is going to try to dip into all of Nina's accounts to drain them before he dips out of town. But while we wait to see if Nina or anyone can stop him before he potentially wipes her out financially, we can offer up a round of applause for another quality tale. Because this final season is leaving no stone unturned by focusing on every and all plot lines and oddly enough, going this route also helps the audience digest the powerful lessons present in the first three episodes and truly, it will be fascinating to see how the show juggles these important plot lines as we barrel toward the series finale of this poignant journey.
