It really is quite amazing what the hit NBC series, The Irrational, is accomplishing from an analysis standpoint. Simply because it continues to find new ways to explore what makes us irrational beings that do silly and sometimes hurtful and disastrous things. All of which is showcasing how flawed we are as human beings and how difficult it is for us to sometimes think straight and be objective in this life, because of the chaos that surrounds us on a moment to moment. Which has allowed for us to see how great intentions can push us into that realm, along with darkness, and the show clearly has so much more to analyze and teach us regarding such matters. Because this week’s episode of the show opted to showcase how sometimes… being an expert, and personal bias can make us painfully irrational when a crisis arrives. A feat that ‘The Overview Effect’ accomplished by bringing about one stunning crisis. For high above the Earth, the International Space Station dealt with a major problem regarding its cooling system. To the point where NASA had to launch an emergency mission to repair it, and that meant… sending up a pair of astronauts to fix the mess, that happened to be husband and wife, and that meant, there were concerns. For NASA has policies in place that keep couples out of the stars to ensure a smooth mission, free from emotional irrationality. But with the ISS in dire straits, Alec was called in to evaluate and ensure that they would not go that route. Which he was able to sign off on… right before disaster struck. For one of the astronauts, Andre, nearly died in the simulation tank, and that led to a grand investigation to figure out what happened and well, that investigation led to the death of the simulation trainer, named Bo. Who we learned pushed Andre and his wife, Selena, to the max and that made it seem as though, good old-fashioned revenge had come into play. But through some serious digging, Alec was able to understand… that the flight director, a man named Shel, was the one who committed murder. Simply because, he truly believed he knew what was best for this mission, and that this power couple would somehow ruin it. So, he approved harder and more dangerous testing to prove that point, and that he knew best, and that led… to hideously irrational behavior, that perfectly hammered home the central theme. But while that made for an engaging and entertaining story, one that also featured an epic cameo from Bill Nye the Science Guy, there was still so much more present in this story to explore. Such as the fact that Kylie was forced out of her comfort zone and into more FBI related activities to be closer to the crew and better understand how the FBI operates. Not to mention, Marisa was able to spend more time with her son in this story. Since Cam was chasing romance and a place to live in DC to fulfill that romance. Giving rise to a genuine moment of motherhood for Marisa and that was sweet to see play out. Plus, it turned out… that stolen kiss between Simon and Phoebe meant more to them than they knew, and that a genuine romance may be on the horizon. All of which made, for another magnificent chapter in this story. One that once again introduced something unique to us exploration wise. Since we don’t think about how our expertise can sometimes hinder us and in the worst-case scenario, push us to a dark place. All while taking the time to grow every single character in this story. Since everyone learned something special, even Alec. For he came to understand the importance of going the extra mile for love, and that really did bring about a satisfying ending that has us ready for more adventures with this team. Simply because we continue to learn so much about the human condition through this show, and it will be interesting to see what other unique lessons about irrational behavior await us, as we inch toward the end of season two of this lovely series. Until next time. Watch ‘The Irrational’
