We are taught from a very early age that a broken heart is something worth enduring, and we eventually come to learn, why that truly is the case. Because having your heart broken, can be quite healthy in nature. Since it can teach us so much about love, what it really means to us and what we really want from it. Plus, it can also help us figure out what kind of partner we want to have in our lives, and it helps us to put up healthy boundaries when it comes to dating and relationships. But above all, it teaches us so much about ourselves, and what we can handle emotionally, so we embrace the pain when the time is right. Because you cannot accept it when the heart is broken, and we of course, pass that advice along down the line. But sadly, not everyone comes to follow that lesson/advice to a tee, and they let heartbreak devastate them to no end. To the point where they sometimes do some scary things in the name of a love they have been denied. Since some folks won’t go away when a former partner says ‘no’ and some… sink into a deep depression over losing the person they thought was their one and only. And these are folks that need extra support and extra help when they’re heartbroken, to help them learn the positives that can accompany the end of a special moment, but truly… not everyone gets that. Which leads to trouble, the kind that sometimes makes us question how badly a broken heart could break a person, and thankfully, fiction helps fill in those blanks. Since that question was answered in the next episode of The Hunting Party on NBC. For ‘Mark Marsden’ took the time to introduce Bex and the team to that very man, who was also known as ‘The Widower’. For Mark was married three times during his days of freedom, and each time… he killed his bride on their wedding night. Simply because Mark had his heart broken at a young age, and the emotional damage that caused him… brought about attachment issues, and a twisted desire to control his abandonment concerns by handling the exit of his love, in a manner of his choosing and well… he was out of the Pit and he managed to kidnap one of the employees from there named Carol. Making it appear as though he was going to try and claim his fourth bride in a new manner. Because the only real tie they had to one another was the fact that Carol said yes to being his fake bride often in ceremonies designed to rehabilitate him. ![]()
Which of course, brought about concern, and that prompted Bex and the team to work harder than usual to understand the change in pattern here. Because Mark always had a willing bride and Carol was not that. Or at least, so it seemed. Because the incredible work this team put forth, revealed that Carol had also suffered through heartbreak and was eager to be embraced by Mark, and she truly believed he had moved beyond his darker days, and genuinely loved her. So, they were set to be wed, and that prompted the team to make contact with Carol and sow doubt in her mind to prevent her from walking down the aisle. A plan that slowly worked but came together at the right moment. That allowed for Carol to live and find the help she needed in healing her own broken heart while putting an end to Mark Marsden and his special brand of love-based madness.
All of which, truly explored that worst-case scenario for a broken heart. Since it drove Mark to madness and murder and every bad behavior one can exhibit in a relationship. That spoke hard to the need for giving folks in that deeply broken place, support and care so they can climb out of that darkness, and that also brought forth a fascinating and engaging case that was nicely bookended by the other moments in this tale. Such as the fact that Shane dealt with a lot of personal chaos in this story by not being Dr. Dulles’ son. Since Shane was denied access to Dulles’ care facility and was being carefully watched by his actual daughter. Leaving all of us to wonder why he pushed his way into Dulles’ orbit in the first place and why he’s so chill about being followed. Not to mention, this episode took us inside Silo 12. In fact, Jacob joined Oliver and Bex in the down deep of that place and well, it raised more questions than answers. Since all that remained were echoes of a slaughter, and clearly, echoes of experiments on inmates, the kind that gave Richard Harris that extra kick. Leading us to wonder, what the hell went on down there? Time will tell of course, but in the meantime, we can celebrate another thoughtful episode. One that really did ponder upon a concept that doesn’t get explored in this manner in popular fiction and it also featured, a little Silence of the Lambs connection. Since Brook Smith, who played Catherine Martin in the film, played Carol here, and that just added to an amazing tale, one that has us counting down the minutes to next week’s journey, as we hope to learn more about Silo 12, and the Pit. Until next time. Watch ‘The Hunting Party’
