When we think of serial killers in popular television shows or in popular media in general, specific images come to mind. In that, said killer will be a sinister and dark character, someone whose face harbors a madness we do not understand. Plus, they will be the product of evil done upon them, and they will be ruthless and scary and… they will be a man. Simply because the vast majority of serial killers are men, and they all meet those criteria in both reality and in fiction. For Ted Bundy had a real madness sparkling in his eyes and so did Hannibal Lecter. But what we often forget regarding this disturbing ‘hobby’ is that it isn’t just exclusive to men. In fact, history is rife with some infamous serial killers that happened to be women, with the most recent one being Aileen Wuornos, who went on a stunning spree. Yet, they are rarely spotlighted in fiction or popular media and that is why the next episode of The Hunting Party is of note. For ‘Lowe’ was a story that at first, made it seem as though we were being treated to more of the norm from this act. Wherein another dude from The Pit was ready to resume his work. Only for us to quickly learn, that a woman named Brenda Long was the serial killer in question, and she was very, very eager to stab ahoy, and well, putting her into the spotlight led to another amazing episode from the series. In large part, because Brenda was a vastly different type of bloodthirsty monster, one grounded and shaped by a general disdain for the world and the sour actions that humanity takes part in. Which was refreshing to say the least, since the usual old standbys of trauma, loss and abuse tend to be the driving factors for these killers. Which of course is often the case in reality, but it was nice to see different origins in play come and see Brenda work toward different goals than what’s come before her. Since her ultimate quest was to reclaim the land, she carefully cultivated to be a wolf sanctuary. One where she trained her wolves to kill since her sacred land was a special killing zone that she relished owning and controlling. ![]()
That shift in motivation allowed for a fascinating cat and mouse game to take place in the forests up north, where Bex and the team tried to stay one step ahead of Brenda, who knew the land like the back of her hand and that presented some unique challenges. The kind that allowed for other members of the team to step up and shine. Because Shane’s experience in the real world as a solider, allowed for him to serve as the team’s tracker and stay with Brenda at every step, and that truly gave him plenty to do here, and it prevented Brenda from settling in, since the team was constantly on her heels. Plus, we also saw Morales shine here as well, since we came to learn of her thorough and competitive nature and that too, kept Brenda reeling.
Which eventually, all helped to corner her at her lowest, wherein Bex pressed all the right buttons and used guile and some bold choices to finally put Brenda Lowe back where she belonged, behind bars, and yet, this episode still had more to offer us. For it just so happened to build on Jacob’s suspicions regarding Odell. Because once the case was over, he let Bex in and let her know that Odell was potentially involved in the explosion in some capacity. Since he quickly pulled files from his computer minutes before the explosion and sadly, he handed those files to someone nefarious for reasons we don’t understand just yet, but likely will down the line. All of which brought together the amazing episode in question. One that informed us that this series is going to keep us on its toes. Because clearly, The Pit was filled to the brim with all kinds of unique and hideous killers and monsters, and we will indeed meet them and learn about their quirks and that’s exciting in a twisted way. Mainly because it will add more refreshing ideas to an already refreshing series, and truly… it will be interesting to see what kinds of unique monsters Bex and the team will encounter, and of course, learn what the heck Odell is up to, as season one of this brilliant new show continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘The Hunting Party’
