There was a time in the television landscape where the holiday special was a staple, and rightfully so. After all, people were indeed huddled around the television during the chilly holiday season, so what a perfect time to offer up stories that celebrated the wonder of the season in a manner that pleased the audience from beginning to end, and provided folks with a story that featured a powerful lesson. After all our minds and hearts are open during the holidays, so it really is the perfect time to look at the world through a new lens and perhaps make some changes to how we handle things in the new year. But all that wonder and lessons aside, the evolution of television, and the desire for lessons to become a staple of prime time, slowly brought about the end of this tradition. At least… for a little while. Because slowly but surely, the holiday special is making quite the comeback. For we are starting to see some pop up on the networks again, complete with the right messaging and well, it just so happens that Seth MacFarlane and his crack team of writers, opted to create one as well. For the next episode of Ted on Peacock, actually features a holiday tale. One that is hyper intelligent and explores some of the world’s woes and how perhaps to cure them, in the most hilarious way possible. For ‘Loud Night’ saw Matty take heat from his family once again. Because he opted to watch the Pats game over going to church to hear Susan sing, and sing she could. For she brought down the angelic house at Christmas Mass, a service that also featured a spirited debate regarding the nature of Jesus Christ and how… Ted might be the second coming of the Messiah. But once those lovely and funny moments were out of the way, did the show begin to dig into some deeper stuff through humor. Because Matty really did get it from Blaire for not being there for his wife and that prompted him… to wish upon a shooting star one night, just like his son did back in the day. For someone that would listen to him and side with him, and he got his wish. ![]()
For his precious childhood toy dump truck, Dennis, came to life, and unlike Ted… he was a complete and utter a-hole. A true enabler of bad behavior and best seen as MAGA on steroids. Because he had plenty to say about the world, and ‘liberals’ and all the horrible nonsense we see and hear on social media and the news now, and he was happy to egg that part of Matty on, and that escalated when it was discovered that Blaire was fluid in her sexuality and was dating hSarah. Because now, Dennis had a reason to really push Matty to indulge in his worst possible thoughts and behaviors and he did, and he deeply hurt Blaire and Sarah, to the point where she was ready to leave. Which forced Matty to do some inward thinking and make some powerful admissions.
Such as the fact that his views, his close-mindedness, was in fact, a part of generational nonsense that we teach children in America. And of course… we also came to learn that Dennis was gay and projected his hate of himself onto others. Which set the stage for a happy ending to come into play. Since those truths allowed people and truck alike to accept their mistakes, so Dennis could go be himself elsewhere and where Matty could finally be a great surrogate dad to Blaire. But what mattered more here, was the sheer fact that this episode pointed out… how we do have a problem of festering hate and closemindedness in America, and that much of it stems from mob mentality, and a desperate need to be seen and acknowledged by men who quite literally weren’t hugged enough as a child. And that the cure, is some measure of understanding, of forcing these folks to really face the harm they cause and understand why they fear what they fear. Which is of course, easier said than done, since the incendiary nature of the world at this moment, makes civil discourse quite difficult. But there may come a day when we can, and we should, and we should teach one another that being ourselves and being open to change can accomplish wonders, and we learned all of that… from a dump truck named Dennis. Because that’s how things go in this franchise, and the show deserves a round of applause for assembling this brilliant story. One that used incredible humor to teach, and served as a perfect holiday special if you will, and well… now that we’ve reached the end of this wondrous story, there is only one episode left in season one to explore, and it will be fascinating to see what the team behind this series cooked up to bring season one to a close. Until next time. Watch ‘Ted’
