For the most part, Star Wars stories follow a pretty specific structure. In that, they set up a grand challenge for the hero of the story to face, one that builds to a crescendo so that the final act or season finale… is about as epic as they come. For that is what A New Hope put forth, and that truly did become a standard that everyone enjoys and well… why deviate from what works? But that is why the new Disney+ series, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew continues to be of note. For it has made a point to buck traditional moments in this universe, and that clearly includes offering up a different type of ending to the story, as evidenced by this week’s episode. For ‘We’re Gonna Be in So Much Trouble’ should have set the stage for a traditional grand battle between the citizens of At Attin and the Pirates that plague this sector of the galaxy. Complete with montages of preparations from a world not ready for war, and hints at possible salvation from the New Republic. But instead… this episode offered up something exciting and new. For instance, there was no march to war or preparations for a fight. Mainly because… there wasn’t time to. For shortly after the parents of our heroes launched a communications buoy into the sky, the Onyx Cinder and the Pirate Frigate arrived at the planet’s barrier, and that led to a fascinating showdown. One where Jod basically surmised that the Cinder was the key to getting through the barrier. A reality reinforced by the fact that no pirate ship made it through. Which prompted Jod to execute Brutus at the first opportunity and take charge of the frigate and pirate brigade, to capture the Cinder and board her. All in the hopes of using its technology to get the pirates though. But thanks to some quick thinking on Fern’s part, Jod was briefly sidetracked, and the kids were able to get the ship into the barrier. Wherein a revitalized SM-33, who helped them retake the ship… brought them through the barrier safely. Mainly because the Onyx Cinder was revealed to be a former Old Republic ship and that alone gave it clearance. But alas, any hope for a smooth return home and an equally as smooth reunion was ruined by Jod. Who regained consciousness at the worst time, and he brought down SM-33 with his lightsaber and quickly informed the children, that any further trouble would result in real pain and real punishment. Which put them into silence and eventually awe after they landed. For they were transported for the first time to the Vaults. Wherein Jod and the crew were able to see the vast stores of Republic Credits that At Attin was home to, and of course, Jod was able to get near it, and touch it, because the droids believed him to be a Republic Emissary. All of which set the stage for a vastly different kind of finale. Because in many ways, the bad guy won, and he did not have to fire a single shot or bring about waves of devastation. All it took was a little skill with a lightsaber, some threats and more lies, and the spoils of At Attin are at his fingertips. Which means, who knows how this story will end. For no one is coming to save the planet, and no one knows how to combat a lightsaber on this world and that leaves all of us eager to see what the season finale will bring our way. But in the meantime, we can celebrate a genuinely unconventional Star Wars story, one that truly did not follow the norms in the slightest and that was a real treat and hopefully we will see more stories take an unconventional path in the SWU, after of course… we see what becomes of At Attin and this intrepid crew. Until next time. Watch ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’
