Once in a while Star Trek: Lower Decks throws out an episode that is literally so bold that it makes the viewer stop and really wonder. This was the episode to beat any and all episodes in the ‘what just happened’ category. Now, that’s not to say these episodes are bad. Quite the opposite. These episodes are often off the wall, funny, and over the top. This was all of the above. While Lower Decks is often a less serious show, it likes to push boundaries and this episode did just that. The return of Peanut Hamper should have clued us all in to just how insane this episode was going to be. Peanut Hamper abandoned the crew of the Cerritos in their time of need. Thankfully, the crew survived, and in a way, they were much better off without her. Now, Peanut Hamper only joined Starfleet to get back at her dad. She had no loyalty to Starfleet or her ship and its crew. No, she’s a selfish life form. Eventually, she drifts to a planet that is outside of the Federation and unaware of their existence. Here she meets Owl people on the planet Areore. Here, the people embrace her. They treat her as one of their own, teach her their ways, and show her the wonders of their planet. She’s not completely trusted, however, until she saves the Village Leader from a sky snake bite, with her Starfleet Medical technology and knowledge. From there, she’s taken under the wing of the chief’s son, Rawda. The two form a… close and… intimate relationship. It’s a unique union that soon leads to a wedding. Sadly, the wedding is interrupted by Scavengers that Peanut Hamper had been running from. Seeing no other option, Peanut Hamper calls the Cerritos for help. They won’t get there in time, though, so she goes and takes the ship out herself., The Scavengers were stealing ancient ships buried in the planet; they belonged to the Owl People’s ancestors. The Scavengers survive their ship being destroyed and flee on one of the Owl’s ships. It’s got surprising weaponry on it and the Cerritos isn’t able to keep up once she arrives. The Scavengers then reveal that they were told the ships were up for grabs and belonged to no one. That Peanut Hamper had called them there.
They also had recordings of her doing it. That’s right, the little Exocomp lied. She betrayed everyone, especially her fiancé. All to get back in the good graces of Starfleet. Sort of. It was mostly to get off this planet because she’s selfish. Thankfully, there’s an even bigger ship that Rawda flies and uses to save the Cerritos. After that, the people of Areore decide they want nothing to do with the robot that betrayed them. Peanut Hamper threatens to call the Borg if Captain Freeman doesn’t take her with them. She’s promptly arrested and thrown in Sentient Computer Jail.
What an episode. Also, who let Mariner fly and Boimler navigate?
