There are a great many reasons that people are eager to tune into mockumentary style television shows. For the majority of them, it’s the comedy and satire they provide regarding a unique workplace, since you cannot go wrong with seeing a funnier and thoughtful side to places, we know nothing about. For others, it is the characters that they enjoy, since these stories often harbor quirky folks that feel familiar. But above all, we all tune in to just be reminded that work is, weird, period, and filled with all kinds of wild ups and downs. But that when we find the right job, it’s all worth tolerating, and well… all of that is top of mind today, simply because the next episode of St. Denis Medical on NBC put so much of that on display. For instance, ‘Salamat You Too’, took the time to remind us of the fact that no matter where you go, there will always be some strong-willed individuals that are a little too into themselves and a little crazy at the wrong moment. Which was showcased by Dr. Bruce, and Dr. Ron. Since Bruce was eager to continue to be showcased as the quarterly featured employee, to the point where he sabotaged others from getting it because he loved seeing himself on screens, and Dr. Ron, well, he went a little too far into the void of madness here. Since a parking issue with a coworker led to nasty notes and tirades and a horrible collision to be proven he was in the right. All of which reminded us of the wild nature of the workplace and how certain personalities spice things up for certain. But of course, this episode also made a point to showcase… that regardless of how prestigious the job is and how skilled the staff can be, cliques and such will still be a thing. Because it’s just natural for us to congregate in that manner and with certain people and that there are some who will question that natural order of things. No matter how efficient life is when they exist, since those cliques do tend to get things done. All of which was explored by way of Alex and Matt’s journey. Because Matt took notice of the fact that a number of Korean nurses stuck together and enjoyed a sense of standing because of how well they worked together and, being the new guy, brought it up and wondered if that was healthy. Of course, being the new head nurse, Alex listened and that led to chaos of course. Not to mention, a little clapback from that group of nurses because well, when you upset the natural order of any workplace that’s how it goes. Which was the real core lesson here. To not mess with how things flow in a workplace if they’re not causing problems and just use it to everyone’s advantage. Also, to not listen to Matt. Because he’s the reason there was unrest in the hospital, and why Alex had to be a little more open with the staff to gain their respect, and ignorance would have been bliss here. But either way, that was a fine way to explore how workplaces operates and how cliques help it thrive and all of this led to one delightful episode. Because this one offered up many of the reasons that we tune into this type of story. Since it had quirky characters abound, including a lovely cameo from Nico Santos from Superstore fame, it mocked some elements of the workplace in a brilliant and respectful manner and above all… it truly reminded us of the nature of work, regardless of our career field and that led to some amazing jokes as well. The kind that truly put big smiles on our faces as the comedic chops of this cast shined and it also, left us eager for more of this budding new series. Since it clearly is going to deliver on its promises to take us inside the world of medicine like never before, and it will be interesting to see what other aspects of that field it showcases as season one continues along. Until next time. Watch ‘St. Denis Medical’
