Something we don’t really talk about enough when it comes to the medical world, is how being a doctor can in fact be, quite the thankless job. Because really, they move from patient to patient at a breakneck pace, and because someone is sick or injured, there isn’t always some measure of decorum or kindness in the middle of their visit, and once the patient is gone, they’re gone. Off to live their life healed, minus their follow-up appointment. Not to mention, the non-stop pace they often experience, especially in a hospital setting, really leaves no chance for a sit-down reflection of how great they did that day. They just work, and it does leave one to wonder, if that causes a touch of harm. Because we are beings that thrive on feedback, on something that informs us we are good at what we do, and not having that can make us struggle and well, the next episode of St. Denis Medical on NBC, informs us that thanklessness can indeed create strife. A feat that ‘Listen to Your Ladybugs’ accomplished by way of three incredible storylines. One of which, involved Dr. Bruce. Who found himself at a point where no one was really offering him any feedback and that made him desperate and eager to find it, and when he could not get it… he broke down and showcased that some doctors really struggle without that feedback, but keep at it, because that’s the oath they swore. Plus, Dr. Ron dealt with a variation of this. Since he was dealing with a self-diagnosing patient. Who knew it all and knew what to expect, and that made life tough for Ron, and his job was thankless in nature because he was nothing more than a glorified thermometer at that point, and even Joyce, felt the wrath of such matters. Because she was setting up a program that was designed to ensure that women received regular mammogram screenings to ensure good health, one that even caught a concern regarding her own. But she really felt as though no one took the program seriously, especially when it was clearly saving lives. All of which spoke volumes to just how thankless it all can be. But since this show lives in the realm of positivity, it made sure to also explore, how we solve that. Which as it turns out, relates to the simple things in life. For instance. Some kind advice from a patient, that Dr. Bruce thought initially thought was malicious, prompted him to realize that sometimes… a self-reminder that we are enough helps a ton, as does a little motherly advice. As for Dr. Ron, well he learned all a man of his stature needed, was just reassurance that what he did mattered. Which he was able to get from that patient and Joyce just realized, she needed support from her team, and a real boyfriend. One that wouldn’t run away during a biopsy, to feel as though she mattered, and she got half of that. Since Alex and Serena stood by Joyce at every turn and helped the program be a true success through and through. All of which brought home, a powerful episode. One that really did an amazing job of showing the human side of doctors in a manner we don’t see on television enough. Because they are people. People who are a little braver than us, with a far stronger constitution, but people none the less. Who experience illness, and moments where they need a boost emotionally, and it was lovely to see that here, and of course, to have it handled in a beautiful manner. Courtesy of some wonderfully written jokes that landed so well, and now that we’ve reached the end of this magnificent and thoughtful journey, we are back to counting down the minutes to next week’s episode, and all the wonder it is going to send our way.
