There are a great many reasons to love the hit Apple TV+ series, Silo. Such as the fact that it features a refreshing and original plot, one pulled from Hugh Howey’s incredible novellas, that speaks to our world in unique ways and features a setting and a struggle that really is engaging. Not to mention, it features a magnificent cast made up of screen legends, heavy hitters and up and comers who sell every second of this series in a dynamic manner that also reels us in. But of the many reasons we love this show, there is one above all that truly makes our viewing experience worthwhile. In that, the writing on this series is simply top-notch and it always makes sure to flesh out the world these people live in and answer our questions and wow us with incredible surprises. All of which was on display during this week’s episode of the show. For ‘The Safeguard’ took the time to return to Silo 17 for a fair chunk of this story, to fill us in on who Juliette was fighting last week. As it turned out, it was teenagers. Whose parents did not leave the comfort of the Silo when the rebellion started and tried to make peace with Solo, and when that didn’t work… they attacked him and tried to steal all of his food, and they even shot him to have what they wanted. Which prompted Solo to strike back, out of a sense of self preservation, and their bodies were the ones carefully laid down outside of the vault door, and these teens… wanted revenge. They wanted someone to pay for the death of their folks and they wanted to enjoy the spoils of the vault and who better to help them with that, than Juliette? Who they carefully watched from the moment she arrived, and they played a big part in some of her biggest moments and struggles in this Silo. Which of course, fleshed out this world and fleshed out the story further and allowed for Juliette to begin to grow into the role of the hero. Because they expected her to find the code for the door, and in her search for it, she finally figured out that Solo was really Jimmy Conroy, the son of the head of IT for this SIlo, and the trauma he endured in the rebellion made him into a broken man now that tried badly to use other names and identities to hide from his pain and well, knowing this, and being able to piece together what happened with the kids, pushed her to be the voice of reason… to bring people together. And her words and logic, allowed for everyone to step into the vault and come together for a better tomorrow, and that also set the stage for Juliette to return home, since she now had more suits to work with, and this really was a beautiful sequence. One that reminded us that we can be better.
A lesson that hopefully comes to Silo 18 soon. For more trouble was brewing there. Since Bernard further tightened his grip on the Silo through manipulation and fear, and of course… in doing so… created more disillusionment and resistance. Since Sheriff Billings and Sims joined forces to make great changes to the structure of the Silo. But while that was important, there was mention of the fact that this episode offered up more answers and surprised us, and it did all that through Lukas’ journey in this tale. Since he came to learn from Bernard that 50 Silos were built to house humanity, for reasons that still remain in the shadows, but that fact opened up the world even further and informed us that so much more of humanity is out there, and it also pushed Lukas to really figure out the message that Salvador was trying to express.
Because Lukas wasn’t convinced that the message was designed to make him quit and obey, he thought there was more to learn, and he was right. For he deduced that the base of the Silo harbored some kind of secret. Which brought him to the down deep. Where he had to finesse his way into the rebel stronghold so that he could reach the lowest point possible, the very place that Juliette once spent hours upon hours within, with George, and feared because of the water. But Lukas believed it wasn’t that deep and he was correct, and that allowed for him to discover a mysterious tunnel. One that harbored some kind of artificial intelligence and a massive door, and that AI was eager to inform Lukas that no one could know about the conversation that was about to happen, out of fear of a grand penalty known as The Safeguard. Which was… quite the surprise. For it truly informs us that there is so much more to these Silos and that greater mysteries await. As to what those are, we will probably have to wait until next week’s season two finale to find out. But while we do, we can celebrate, a tale that delivered as advertised. Since this world was expanded upon, we learned more facts about it and more regarding some of the characters that populate it, and a true surprise hangs in the balance and that made, for one epic story. One that truly kept us engaged from beginning to end and will have us counting down the days to next Friday’s finale. So, we can see if Juliette makes it home, and what will become of the rebellion and Lukas’ stunning discovery. Until next time. Watch ‘Silo’
