It really is quite amazing what the hit Apple TV+ series, Silo, is accomplishing in its second season from a storytelling standpoint. For not only have we learned so much about this world and how there are more Silos than the one Juliette Nichols called home, but the story is also expanding into a beautifully interwoven tale of two Silos. With Bernard trying to maintain order after Juliette escaped the horrors of cleaning while she works to uncover truths about her new home, through the unique individual that is ‘Solo’ and well, all of this has been accomplished over the course of three whole episodes and it has made for just powerful storytelling. The kind that continued this week by truly creating that tapestry. Since one half of the story focused on Juliette’s time in what we learned is Silo 17. For Solo did speak up about how there are 50 total Silos and that the nearby cluster of them consisted of 15, 16 and 18. One of which we can infer is Juliette’s, since Bernard does have that flashing ‘18’ keychain. But what mattered more is that Solo finally opened up to her and fed her and informed her of what happened in Silo 17, and how someone who didn’t clean and walked over the ridge as well, created utter chaos within the place. For others wanted to know the same truth that Juliette was learning and that led to the death of so many, and sheer panic from Juliette. For she came to realize what we already knew. That her survival accomplished the same kind of disaster back home, and that prompted her to try and enlist Solo’s help in getting her a new suit. To return home and stop the madness that was brewing. But alas, Solo was not eager to leave the Vault and while he did help her look for the stuff she would need, she needed the man in person to help her, and eventually… he came out of his tiny little shell. To interact and understand reality and to finally help Juliette prepare for a return home and that… could not have come at a better time. For the other half of this story revolved around Silo 18, and the chaos that was beginning to brew within its chilly concrete walls.
Because unrest did indeed continue to grow, and Bernard felt helpless to stop it. Which meant he spent a great deal of time with Judge Meadows in this tale to figure out how to quell this, and that… was a frosty alliance for certain. Since the Judge wanted the truth and offered genuine suggestions on how best to stop this quickly. Which involved releasing prisoners from the lower levels to not sow discontent and to be truthful with her about whether or not Juliette willingly left the Silo. But alas, Bernard being a by-the-book, bookworm, could not escape his nature and continued to lie and continued to imprison maintenance and engineering workers, and that… brought Silo 18 to the brink of utter and complete bloodshed and chaos.
For if there is one particular truth about mankind that will never leave us, regardless of the situation we are in, it would be that we will absolutely fight for what we think is right, no matter the risk or the cost. Which happened here for certain. Because the people pushed back and pushed back hard, and that led to loss of life and more fury and more growing discontent. Because slowly but surely, oppression was coming into play and the people weren’t having it. Which means that this place is now an outright powder keg, ready to explode and it is hard to say what will prevent a full-on end to it, a la Silo 17. Because everyone is searching for truth, and everyone is searching for justice, and it is now only a matter of time before the wants of the state and the wants of the people collide in an explosive manner. Which means, that the clock is ticking on Juliette, for her return and her ability to express what lie beyond could quell some of the horror and perhaps lead to truth. But while we wait to see what her quest for a new suit brings her and if she even can return home, we can celebrate one powerful tale. One that truly did blend together two storylines in a magnificent manner, and it truly engaged us and kept us riveted on the screen. But that is what this show knows how to do, and it is only getting better in its second season and that’s incredible. Since it’s been amazing from the get-go and now all we can do is sit back and patiently wait to see what lie ahead as tensions continue to build in another Silo, one that could become another tomb in a graveyard of mystery. Until next time. Watch ‘Silo’
