‘Reacher’ Recap: ‘Pie’

When we last settled in to discuss the epic and enjoyable Prime Video series, Reacher, we pondered a little bit upon how Reacher was going to get out of the incredible mess he was dealing with. Because despite finally having all the answers and evidence to prove to the world what was going on in Margrave, the odds were against him, and his resources were gone. For Roscoe was off protecting Mrs. Hubble and Finlay was fired from the force and to top it all off… one of his supposed allies was as dirty as they come. Since Picard revealed to everyone that he was working with Teale and every other scumbag in this town and well, thankfully the season one finale of this series, wasted little time in showing us exactly how Jack Reacher was going to overcome the odds and save this tiny town.

Which as it turned out… involved a little game of playing along to get along. For the reveal that Picard was in cahoots with this twisted situation, and that they had Roscoe and Charlie and expected to use them as bait to find Paul Hubble… who was alive… prompted Reacher to do as they asked, to bide his time and look for an opportunity to save the day. Which eventually came about while he was on the road with Picard to look for Hubble. Since some stealth on his part allowed for him to plug Picard with a round, giving him freedom to continue the mission to find Hubble on his own terms. So, he could place him under his care. Which thankfully he did, and once Paul was secure and safe, the time came at last for Reacher and his friends to stick it to the bad guys at last.

A feat made possible by the element of surprise because the idiot that is Teale, thought Picard had things in hand with Reacher and that Finlay was locked up tight. But instead, Reacher and his friends… including Neagley… were arming up to the teeth and preparing for a daring rescue mission. One that involved an all-out assault on the factory with fire and a firestorm of bullets and well… this battle led to some satisfying moments for the audience. The kind that saw the Hubble family reunited and saved and redeemed and it also featured, some payback for our heroes. Since Roscoe was able to make Teale pay for killing Gray and Finlay got revenge for Picard’s betrayal since he showed up for the fight. But most important of all, Reacher finally got justice for Joe. Courtesy of a hell of a fight with KJ Dawson who outright admitted that he was the one that put down Joe Reacher. 

But what truly made this satisfying and epic battle so worth our while… is that it happened early enough in the finale, to allow for something quite important to happen. In that, Jack Reacher could finally take a moment and reflect upon this entire experience and grieve and make some decisions as to what would come next for him. After all, he had a chance to settle down here with someone he clearly loved dearly, and he had friends in this town, and he could even take part in rebuilding it. But Reacher is a man that understands… he isn’t meant to settle down. He’s the guy that steps in and takes care of impossible problems. The kind that the innocent cannot solve, and the good guys can’t touch because it will make them dirty as well, and well… that motivated him to hit the road and explore the country and see who might need his help next.

Which is… the perfect way to end this story. Since let’s be honest, this reboot of the film series of Reacher, is in essence an origin story. One that did a wonderful job of bringing a hero for modern times to life and it was just incredible to see Jack Reacher become a hero in this tale and understand what he can do for the world… and that revelation and being able to see exactly what he can accomplish when he is unleashed here, makes us eager for more adventures with this delightfully different hero and the good news is, those will be happening. Since Prime Video has indeed commissioned a second season of this quality adaptation of Lee Child’s stellar novels and it will be quite interesting to see a fully formed Reacher take on a new challenge when season two of this series arrives on the small screen.
