It really is quite amazing what the new AMC Networks series, Orphan Black: Echoes, is accomplishing in its inaugural season. For not only is it giving fans of the Orphan Black franchise a well-written and delightful sequel to the original material, one that holds a lovely flame to what came before, but it is also quickly becoming… a powerful story about the nature of lies and how they propagate in our world and how people use those lies in our world, to control and manipulate people. So that perhaps we can see the lies coming in an era where everyone is trying to tell ‘their truth’ or denying the facts with wild and crazy lies and well, last night’s episode of the show put on a masterclass exploration regarding this. A feat that ‘Pegasus Girl’ accomplished, by taking us into the past to meet up with Jules, a short while after she was brought forth from the clone cocoon she was printed within. Wherein she of course, had no memory and no understanding of her current state of affairs. Just like Lucy, there were merely echoes in her mind, and a rudimentary understanding of the person she would soon see in the mirror and well, that was when Paul Darros’ carefully placed agents worked to put together the lies. For Jules was working with a neuropsychologist, hired by Darros, that only had Jules’ ‘best interests’ in mind, of course, and well… she immediately fed Jules a steaming pile of deception, in order to manipulate. Wherein Jules came to learn that her memory was ‘damaged’ because she was in a car crash, and that her ‘parents’ died in the crash and that her life would forever change because she would have to find a new home to live in. And of course, in order to properly sell this lie, other agents came in to play the role of old friends, and all of this helped Jules to believe… she was indeed the person others wanted her to be and these moments in this segment of the story… really did help us to learn how lies work and how people sell them. Since we watched how gaslighting, repetition of the lie and reinforcing its core messaging can and will bend people to a lie and the will of others, especially when they are vulnerable, and a bit lost in life.
Yet, this story also correctly pointed out, that lies never hold and when an individual is truly curious or understands that something doesn’t quite add up, an individual will search for the truth and eventually uncover it. Which Jules did indeed do here. Because there were parts of the lie that just did not add up, and parts of her ‘former life’ that didn’t feel akin to behavior or vernacular that she would use or exhibit. Which prompted her to dig deep and uncover… that her past was indeed manufactured and that other agents were responsible for it. Which was a shocking revelation for her to uncover, one that prompted her to suck up her pride and make her way back to Craig to signal to Lucy that she was ready to talk and ready to plan.
Speaking of Lucy, while Jules was indeed reminiscing, Lucy was digging into Jules’ past as well and quickly uncovered the fact that Darros and his lackeys were amazing at sneaking in and out of situations without anyone being the wiser, a move that will make her fight to uncover the truth all the more difficult. But teaming with Jules at last, will undoubtedly aid in that matter since two brains working together always harbors benefits, and this episode also revealed… that Kira is in fact, quite the ally. Because she still wasn’t convinced that Jules was a cold-blooded killer, and that she needed more to time to prove that was the case. Which prompted her to confront Darros in person to ensure Lucy’s safety. Which may have been a useless move in that moment but spoke to how a possible connection between her, and Lucy and Jules could be beneficial if they can figure out how to connect. All of which brought forth, a magnificent episode when all is said and done. One that showcased in great detail, the nature of the lie, and that is quite the relevant bit of the human condition to explore right now. Since so many, are hearing lies spewed at them day and night from buffoons desperate to be in power, and knowing how that works and why it happens… might help mitigate some of the noise out there right now. Plus, through that examination, we were treated to a carefully crafted story that explored the power of Paul Darros and his crack team of manipulators, and how hard they are working to get what they want from people, and of course… the potential why behind that has us hooked. Since we are dying to know the endgame of this enigmatic and eccentric man, and whether or not our heroes can find freedom from his machinations. Until next time. Watch ‘Orphan Black: Echoes’
