One of the hardest lessons we have to learn in life, is that objectivity is king. And what makes that lesson so difficult to learn, are the bevy of emotions we carry in our hearts. Because they tend to control the moment over anything else and when they do, we react poorly to situations that quite frankly… we shouldn’t. For if we take a moment to step away and look at the situation in question objectively, we will immediately find that we are likely in the wrong and are overreacting. Which in turn will allow for us to apologize and defuse the situation and move on with our day. But alas, those emotions are powerful and the surge they give us is sometimes impossible to let go of. If anything, this all-important lesson is top of mind today, simply because Franklin didn’t bother to mind it in the next episode of Night Sky, and that led to all kinds of trouble and heartbreak for him in ‘Boilermakers’. And what brought about the chaos in question… was an off the cuff comment from the local sheriff. For Franklin tried, once again… to get Jude in trouble with the law by asking the sheriff to check his DNA and fingerprints. A move the sheriff refused to take part in since no crime was committed and that of course angered Franklin and unleashed the comment in question. Wherein Franklin came to learn what Irene said to the sheriff regarding his potential mental state. Which he saw… as a titanic betrayal. As though the love of his life, the one woman he could rely upon, had turned her back upon him and insulted their marriage. A pain that pushed him to just head into town and drown his sorrows… with Byron no less. But in reality, Franklin was just being foolish. For that one moment, one that Irene stated was designed to keep trouble out of the house, wasn’t indicative of their entire relationship. It was just a single moment, one that can be debated as poor in nature. But had Franklin taken the time to look at the situation in a calm and objective manner… he would have been sober and home… instead of revealing secrets about the portal and making nice with a man who isn’t completely trustworthy. But while that was indeed a fine lesson on the need to be objective, there were other pertinent moments present to be found in this tale to move the other plotlines along. Since Jude came to learn that the sticky-fingered nurse in town robbed him of something critical and that sent him out into a world he clearly doesn’t understand and well, that left him in a tough place at the end of this episode. Plus, Stella’s hunt got underway, and it is obvious now that she isn’t telling her daughter the whole truth about their role in this life. Since their cohort is packing some serious firepower, the kind that would easily take someone down and that definitely gives one pause and leaves one wondering if this ancient order of protectors is as noble as they seem. Either way, this was just another fascinating episode from this series. Since it continues to offer up stories that are both character/human condition studies, while also offering up just enough regarding the portals and their purpose to keep us hooked and well, this show is definitely successful at that. Since this writer, much like so many others, is eager to continue this fascinating and original journey. To see what other unique life lessons await us as the York family learn, alongside the rest of us, all the secrets surrounding these incredible portals to worlds unknown. Until next time.
