It really is quite incredible what the hit NBC series, Night Court, is accomplishing in its third season. For not only is it leaning into the comedy in a dynamic manner, providing the audience with magnificently zany moments for us to enjoy. But it continues to find ways to grow its characters through powerful and sentimental storylines, and it continues to stay true to what this franchise has always stood for. In that, it’s always been about how we are stronger together, and the importance of lifting one another up, and that’s made for a beautiful and hilarious season of storytelling. If anything, all of those elements are top of mind today because this week’s episode of the show blended them together in one epic manner. A feat that ‘A Little Night Court Music’ accomplished by way of the return of Broadway weasel… er… legend… Sy Hoffman. Who was back in the courtroom because of a case involving a live reading of erotica on the subway, and well… word came round through the team that Dan Fielding’s memoir was something special, something beautiful. Something that he could and should produce. Mainly because the book version of it wasn’t doing so well on the publishing circuit. So, Sy agreed and that led… to the mayhem and the comedy that season three has been known for. In part because Julianne had the hots for Sy, courtesy of a steamy meeting ages ago, but also because… the team put together a freakin’ musical number to present a proof of concept to one of Sy’s investors. Which was just… amazing through and through. Because everyone in the cast showcased their singing chops and their ability to choreograph to a number. Not to mention, the number itself was toe-tapping and catchy to boot. All of which just leaned into the fun that season three is known for, and the musical number in question, also put Sy in jail. Because he was working to commit musical fraud by selling the same shows over and over to suckers that wanted to invest on Broadway. But while that absolutely brought about the fun factor, and let us know that this cast can sing, the musical number itself and how we came to that point, are what really spoke to the core theme of this franchise. Because to get Dan to do a little song and dance alongside his friends, they had to believe in him and believe in his story. Which they most certainly did. But the fact that Abby worked to make this production worthwhile, and that Julianne helped shift the narrative to make it all inclusive in a beautiful manner, by pointing out how Dan was in a wondrous third act of life that was about supporting an old family friend and the people around him, really hammered home how everyone in this place…is a chosen family. One that works to ensure that everyone succeeds and that everyone leaves the courtroom a little better, regardless of how crazy the night happened to be. A goal they achieve often because they’re kind to one another and respectful, and all of these elements brought together, one of the finest episodes of this series to date. Because this one really was something special and truly had it all. Since the laughs here came at us at a mile a minute, and everyone was simply on their A-game here acting wise, and well, it just goes to show what sitcoms and comedies can accomplish when they ground themselves in something worthwhile and have something wonderful to say. Because truly, that core message lifts us up and gives us hope that we can still find unity and accomplish wonders in doing so, and now that the curtain call has taken place on Night Court: The Musical, we are left counting down the minutes to the next adventure, and all the messaging it will send our way. Until next time. Watch ‘Night Court’
