There are, a great many benefits to a television series snagging a sophomore season. There’s the obvious one, in that… the audience gets more of what they love, and the creatives behind the scenes get to make more of a story they care deeply about. But there’s also the fact, that those very same creatives, can be a little bolder in their storytelling, and take the show to new heights. Not to mention, they can even experiment a bit since the audience trusts them, as evidenced by this week’s episode of Night Court on NBC. Because thus far, this series has held to a pretty standard structure. In that, we are treated to the perfect balance of drama and comedy through wondrous life lessons and comedy to accompany it. Which has indeed given us plenty to enjoy about this new-boot, but this week, things went a little differently. For the writer’s room wanted to see just what this show might look like, if it let loose on the comedy, and truly offered up a wild show filled with laughs and opportunities for the cast to really shine as comedic actors, and well, ‘A Crime of Fashion’, informed us… that such an experiment is quite amazing in nature. Simply because, we were treated to a non-stop laugh fest last night, all thanks to the fact that Fashion Week descended upon New York City, and much like last week’s tale, we learned that models aren’t always about good looks and discipline. They’ll go the extra mile and cause some trouble and well, that gave rise to some wild storylines. One of which involved Dan Fielding doing his best to learn iciness from a fashion mogul. So, he could find more solitude and well, he learned some powerful and impactful lessons from her, the kind he had to quickly abandon when his new look caused Olivia’s closet great harm. Because in the process of learning a look colder than Blue Steel, he gave away her suits and had to help her reclaim them, while also helping his coworkers fend off one rogue peacock. Which made for some amazing laughs, and there were more to be found in this tale. Since Wyatt was eager to gain control of his courtroom and used some wild techniques to make that happen, but he made it happen, nevertheless. But while those plotlines were enjoyable, they paled in comparison to Abby’s. For she entered into a torrid love affair with a fashion designer named Martini, one that she thought would be a lasting love. But it was nothing more than a quick burst of flames, one that was quelled when she was given a weird robe to use on the bench. One that was also involved in the Great Peacock Courtroom Battle of 2024, and one that prompted Abby and Martini to part ways in the end. All of which gave rise to one zany and wild episode, that did not hold back on the laughter. Because it did as expected and it let everyone just lean into the comedy and shine in the process, and we reaped the benefits at home, because the jokes just kept coming. Giving rise to the reality that season two is going to surprise us now and again with stories that go harder with the comedy than we could ever imagine… and… it may feature some more guest star surprises. Since Kunal Nayyar portrayed Martini in this tale, and that meant we got a bit of a Big Bang Theory reunion since he and Melissa played Raj and Bernadette on that show, and it was lovely to see them play off of one another again and bring more smiles to our faces and well, in the end, all this episode does is leave us eager for more. So, we can see what kinds of unique episodes awaits us, when court returns to session. Until next time. Watch ‘Night Court’
