There was a time in the world of television, where a great injustice was imparted upon the characters of popular television shows. In that, incredible and stunning, and sometimes outright devastating things would happen to them… and there would be no follow up regarding the impact of those events. They would just continue along, with maybe a mention of what occurred, but few fans were ever happy with that. Because profound moments have a major impact upon people and fake people or no, it made no sense that a story would not take the opportunity to explore that and enrich the story even further and thankfully, that changed. For shows are now starting to follow-up on major moments in character’s lives and add to the depth of that moment and the story and a fine example of this, was last night’s episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on NBC. For ‘Accomplice Liability’ took the time to revisit one of the darkest moments that ADA Dominick ‘Sonny’ Carisi Jr. has experienced in his fictional life, that hideous hostage situation he took part in, in ‘Cornered’. For Deonte Moseley, who was supposed to quickly disappear from everyone’s life, was fighting the charges against him tooth and nail and was ready to take the whole matter to trial and that meant, Carisi, Elizabeth and Tess were prepping for trial and that brought about a harrowing journey for certain, where we saw the impact of that dark day. Because it turned out that Tess, was rightfully falling to pieces mentally from what happened on that day. To the point where she turned to drugs to cope with the darkness within, and that put her testimony in jeopardy. Not to mention, Carisi was not himself either. Since clearly, the trauma of the matter was still hanging heavy over his soul. To the point where he was trying to help ADA Rourke, win the case while working to contain his contempt and anger over this whole mess. Which brought about… a stunning story for certain. Where we truly came to understand that a moment like that would haunt people for ages, and break them, leave them angry and feeling empty and eager to somehow get hold of a sense of justice. Which Captain Benson worked to help Carisi find in this story. Because she made it clear, that victims of crimes, can in fact… reclaim agency and grow. Which was expressed and explored in several ways here. Some of which involved, just facing that which hurt us, which is what Tess did in this story. Because after a few setbacks, and a stint in detox, she took the stand and looked Moseley in the eyes and told her story, and made it known the horrors she endured on that day, and of course, Carisi had to find his agency back as well. Which was tough because he did have an outright outburst in the trial, and he struggled to find his way mentally through this mess. But that talk with Benson did help him to understand that the way back for him, involved using his mind and his vast legal knowledge to gain the upper hand in the matter and eventually, he and the team did. Courtesy of the discovery of a legal advisor in jail, that was eager to snap some revenge upon Deonte. That of course, brought the case to an end, with Deonte heading to jail for the rest of his life, and thus… closure came to this matter and there was healing. Which yes, let’s be honest… was a tad rushed. Because if there is one thing, we all know, trauma doesn’t disappear the instant we face our pain. It helps start a grand process, and gives us strength to go on, and here… all was well, and that’s a very escapist thing to do. But this did follow-up at last on something critical and it did offer closure and that is a start, one that this show and others will learn from, and it did lead to an engaging journey, and it will be interesting to see how many follow-ups will be found from this show, this season. Since it has offered quite a few to date. Until next time. Watch ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’
