There are a great many reasons to love the WE tv series, Kold x Windy. After all, this is a series that features an original and compelling plot. Plus, this is a series filled to the brim with commentary on chasing one’s dream and life in general. Not to mention, it also features some incredible music, and well-written characters (that are brought to life by some AMAZING performances) that we can relate to and that we root for. Because Malika and Renee are supremely talented and are more than their environment. If anything, it really is the characters that drive our true love of the series since we want to see them grow and enjoy some happiness and obtain their dreams, and it just so happens… that they were given extra attention in last night’s episode. For ‘Ya Gotta Believe in Something’ is a story that took the time to mostly just focus on Malika and Renee and their lives in the moment, while they took a moment to regroup and ponder upon what comes next for the duo with a record deal floating in the wind and that led… to some powerful moments with this duo. Since it gave Renee for instance, a little bit of time to just reflect upon her life and the choices she’s made, something she’s been needing to do for some time. Plus, she was also able to just live, breathe, and enjoy the moment for a change. Without darkness hanging over her as it has over the past few episodes, and it was nice to just see Renee indulge in that and think upon tomorrow, while Malika dealt with some ups and downs. Because sadly, her mother, Brenda, was back in town and eager to see her daughter, despite abandoning Malika years ago, as GeGe and Malika were quick to point out. Because eventually, Malika did bother to try and speak with and help her to understand… that forgiveness really wasn’t in the cards and rightfully so. Because no mom should be able to just waltz back in and demand a relationship after spending decades avoiding one. There needed to be real acts of forgiveness and a genuine effort to reconcile, and until then… there was nothing else to be said. Which was definitely a tough moment for Malika, since it reminded her how much her mother’s abandonment harmed her deeply. But that encounter did teach her an important lesson about having a parent in a child’s life and pushed her to do something quite bold when she got some great news. In that, her gun charge was dropped, and that meant her family was whole again and that is why… she felt it right to tell Marlon that he was Khiry’s father. A move that wasn’t well received since he wanted to know sooner, and it seemingly cost Malika her romantic relationship with Marlon. But Khiry will have his dad in his life, signifying growth for Malika and putting her on a better path from a family perspective. Not to mention, these two sequences allowed for Sh’Kia Augustin to shine as an actor, since she went all out in selling the emotion here. Plus, in addition to getting Khiry home and getting some honesty out there, she and Renee squashed their beef and started looking toward for the future for Kold and Windy at last. Truly making it seem as though, an interesting turning point was in store for this show. Where perhaps these characters would grow quickly and embrace change and start to move their lives in a new direction in a brisk manner. Which was in fact… concerning. Because then this series would have become like any other and glossed over how hard it is to change and how much work goes into getting what we want… which is why it was a relief to see, that won’t be the case. Because despite finding peace and starting to think about tomorrow… old habits die hard when we aren’t ready to fully embrace change. And sadly, Malika and Renee fell into that. Which is why they continued to stick with stains in this tale, of the elaborate and violent variety. To keep some sense of normalcy in their lives at a time where it simply cannot last. Because like it or not, the universe is telling them the time has come to change, and having this duo keep at the questionable stuff, and involve others that aren’t normally involved, since Brenda is now on board in a desperate effort to apologize… means that this duo will have to earn the dream, and peace and happiness. And it will be fascinating to see that process in motion as we near the end of season one. Until next time.
