Written by John Edward BetancourT THIS IS THE EMERGENCY SPOILER ALERT SYSTEM...YOU ARE ADVISED TO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK...I have to admit, that every single time I settle in to watch a new episode of Jack Ryan, I really have no idea what to expect from said episode and quite frankly, that’s a good thing. Because this television series is trying new things with every new story that it brings to the table and it’s shattered spy drama tropes along the way and well, it’s a downright thrill to know that the unexpected is going to come my way when I hit play on my Amazon Prime App and as it turns out, ‘The Wolf’ was another tale that was par for the course since it too was filled to the brim with unexpected twists and turns. Oddly enough, all of the surprises present in this tale came by way of the Suleiman brothers, since their respective journeys are what left my jaw dropped and I suppose we should start with the first stunner in this story, in that…Mousa finally revealed what exactly he’s up to and as it turns out, he has plans to create the biggest Islamic State the world has ever known. And he plans to accomplish such a feat, by being a true and pure beacon for all those who worship Allah and he made his first big move toward creating his vision for a perfect Islamic nation by making quite the power play against the man he works for, and uniting what should have become a fractured cell with a powerful speech on the need to have a state free from corruption and ego and well, thanks to those words and a little bit of cash, he now has a small army at his disposal. Yet while Mousa was making his power play, his brother continued to make his escape through the mountains of France, with Jack hot on his tail and this little cat and mouse game ended up being quite the harrowing sequence of events, simply due to the fact that eventually, Jack and his task force inadvertently ran into Ali Suleiman at a gas station and that led to a disastrous gunfight that cost the French agent we met in the last episode, Sandrine, her life, and eventually…Jack was forced to put down Ali as well without gathering any information about what the Suleiman cell was up to and to complicate matters further, the death and devastation that came about from this gun fight left Jack shattered, but at least he found some solace in Cathy Mueller’s arms when he returned state side. But the true stunner of the night, came about in the closing moments of this tale, since the attack that Mousa has been working toward for some time now, finally came to fruition, and it all related to the priest we briefly met a few episodes ago mere moments before he was stabbed in the middle of the night. Because while people mourned the loss of that good and kind preacher, Mousa’s men armed and eventually detonated a cache of chemical weapons after locking everyone in the church, making for a chilling sequence as we watched these innocent lives panic as they clamored for air and it’s clear now, that Mousa bin Suleiman is going to declare war on the West’s religious foundations to rally more to his cause… If anything, this one turned out to be quite the dark tale. In fact, the only real bright moment was the fact that Cathy and Jack stopped playing the puppy love game and finally admitted their feelings for one another, but that was grossly overshadowed by the fact that Mousa is consolidating power and starting his murdering spree and I fear it will only get worse once he learns about the death of this brother and well, wow is the best word to describe this episode. Because the story really went into overdrive in this one and dropping something this big in our laps at the halfway point of the season, means that greater moments are on their way and I’m both nervous and excited to see what comes next as the hunt for Suleiman undoubtedly heats up. Until next time.
