If there is one particular question that is on our mind often in this day and age, it would have to be… what is it that transforms police officers into such ugly individuals. Because let’s be honest, we are now fully aware of the fact that there are some dirty and cruel police officers out there. Who cross all kinds of lines for reasons that just don’t make sense. Sure, one can blame corruption through power, but that’s not enough to really push someone to break the law the way they do and treat people in the manner they do. So, we ask that question in the hopes of finding a way to fight back against the corrupt cops out there now and to prevent new ones from being created. If anything, this is top of mind today, simply because the next episode of Chicago P.D. on NBC explored that question in great detail. A feat that ‘Greater Good’ accomplished by having the Intelligence Unit be plunged into a unique situation. For DC Reid basically called in everyone to stop a rash of violent acts taking place in the city, and he wanted police presence to be part of that at every level. Which included Voight’s team no less, and the action that took place during their first day in this enforcement operation, put the team down an unsettling rabbit hole. For they were quick to discover that a group of up-and-coming dealers were trying to power play in the midst of the violence, and that pushed the team to bring them all to justice quickly. But alas, the one person they were able to arrest on the matter stonewalled them at every turn and played it cool. And with Asa back in town, it seemed as though there was little chance of getting anything done since she advised them on how few options they had. But DC Reid made some magic happen along the way. Which allowed for the team to eventually bust the last of these dealers and even put one down during a raid when Reid’s life was threatened. But despite the happy ending here, this bothered Voight deeply. Simply because, something did not add up. For it made no sense that the person of interest they had in custody suddenly decided to sing after being silent for so long, when a lawyer magically appeared, and it was worse that said POI died shortly after being released on a plea deal. Which prompted Voight to quietly begin to investigate DC Reid. First through Asa, since she had some connections in his old precinct, and then through outright confrontation, and what he learned answered that question for us. In that, sometimes, dirty cops like Reid are corrupted, by seeing the world for what it is. Since Voight also figured out that this was about balance and control of the streets, to keep a status quo in check, over a real push to end crime. Because that is impossible without some fundamental changes to the world as a whole, and knowing that an endless fight awaits, and that control could give a person some semblance of hope, could push them to create this kind of environment. Where they choose how best to dole out justice. All of which made for a sorrowful tale, one that answered that question in a manner that was heartbreaking. Since those who step behind the shield are supposed to be a fighting force, not apathetic and lost, and what truly made this episode shine… is that it also took the time to answer, how we potentially solve this problem. For Voight made it clear, that he was ready to take Reid out, regardless of the cost and that may be the answer. Cops that and stand up for what the stands for. Because cops like that, might be enough to act as an internal buffer and a beacon of hope in the darkness, and it will be interesting to see how Voight will pull his plan off, in the weeks to come. Until next time. Watch ‘Chicago P.D.’
