One particular belief that people hold to in this life, is that our lives can change in a singular moment because of the chaos of the universe, and it makes sense as to why we hold to that. After all, just like that… someone we love can disappear from our lives and that single moment puts us on an emotional path we cannot comprehend. Or losing a job we depend upon can alter life in a moment as well. But what’s fascinating about those moments, is that they are always the sum of something more. For time and sometimes disease can bring about the end of those we love, and layoffs tend to be culmination of poor business decisions above our pay grade or our own detrimental actions, and the sooner we understand this truth about big moments, the sooner we can handle them a little better. If anything, the truth about what brings forth life changing moments is top of mind today, simply because it was put on display in the next episode of Chicago P.D. on NBC. A feat that ‘Friends and Family’ accomplished by having Officer Cook encounter what appeared to be one of those random, life changing moments. For one fine weekend day, as she was heading into work, she encountered a vehicle being reckless and with good reason in the driver’s mind. For he informed Cook, before he was taken away from this world because his wild driving resulted in an accident that inflicted fatal wounds upon him, that he was trying to save his kids and his wife. Who had been kidnapped by parties unknown and their actions seemingly changed this family’s path out of the blue, and just like that… Cook was now in the midst of a kidnapping case. One that was indeed legit. For shortly after she informed Voight and the team of what was going on, Intelligence uncovered that a kidnapping took place, and that they needed to act fast to save lives. For the kidnappers were not messing around and they killed the mother of those children when they didn’t get their money as requested. Which pushed the team to go to extremes to save those kids. To the point where Cook used her family’s fortune to help with the ransom, and where Voight brought DC Reid into the fold, and for their efforts… they were able to save those kids and bring them to safety. But in between a harrowing case and some intense moments and shootouts, was proof of that central theme. Because this was more than just a swift act of evil that came out of nowhere to punish this family at random. It was in fact, the sum of actions through and through. For the team was eventually able to uncover, that the mother of those kids, was having an affair with one of the kidnappers. Because she was miserable with her husband, and the belief that she could receive some fat alimony payouts, only added to the strength of that affair. But eventually it cooled, and the jilted lover truly believed he was due a payment and went after this seemingly rich family to get what he thought he deserved. All of which spoke to how a moment that some would see as life-changing and chaotic was anything but. It was a slow-simmering combination of factors that came to a boil because that is how life changing moments happen, and sadly, this is one that was easily avoidable. All of which made for a fascinating and harrowing tale. Because it’s always unsettling when children are put in harm’s way in fiction or in real life. But thankfully this team was there to save them and there to remind us how change takes place. Plus, it was also nice to learn more about Cook, and the drama surrounding her family and how the strange circumstances she lives within, drive her to be more, to be better and the anthesis of what her mother stands for, and well, now that we have reached the end of this case, we are absolutely ready for more. Because this show always brings about engaging cases that harbor a fascinating lesson or observation about life, and we simply must know what thrilling and thoughtful moments await us as season twelve of this magnificent series continues along.
