There was a time, where the cliffhanger ruled the day in television. For so many shows made use of them in their midseason finales and their season finales, and they were epic and engaging, and often kept the audience talking for months on end because of the danger they put a character in or the surprises they sent our way. But it did become overused, sadly, and many a shocking moment was explored. So, the cliffhanger became a rarely used item. But every now and again, you run into a show that still makes use of them and does it well, to the point where we are indeed buzzing about what happened and one particular show that aligns with that, is Chicago Med on NBC. For its winter finale featured a juicy cliffhanger. One where Sharon Goodwin was in quite the pickle. For she was physically harmed by the surviving spouse of a patient that Sharon helped deem beyond hope, part of the many tough calls that hospital administrators and doctors must make in their day, and her attacker wanted vengeance and almost had it. But a ready to resign Dr. Dean Archer saw Sharon in real trouble and was unable to help her in that moment. Leaving us to wonder if Sharon would survive and well, we eventually learned of Sharon’s fate through a grueling midseason premiere last night. For ‘No Love Lost’ picked up mere seconds after Dean saw the trouble in question, and he raced to get back to Sharon and almost failed in saving her. But thankfully, his desperate arrival was enough for Sharon to stab her attacker and that allowed for Dean to get her downstairs. Wherein, Sharon went into surgery and the entire staff learned quickly, that she was in rough shape. For the knife did some serious damage to her organs and tough decisions were on the table. Because her family had to decide if Sharon would undergo a simple surgery that would require her to spend her days getting her meals from an IV bag or they let Dr. Archer help her live her like in a normal manner, via a risky procedure, and they of course… went the safe route since they were deeply and rightfully traumatized by all of this. But a moment of levity and need, prompted Archer to make use of that risky procedure and in the end… Sharon came through just fine. Of course, she would spend a fair chunk of time recovering and healing, but she would live, without being tied to a needle, and that made for one hell of an epic resolution to an epic cliffhanger. One that made us all nervous… but relieved in the end. Especially since Sharon’s attacker also lived and will spend her days in jail. But of course, since this series always reminds us that the world is always in motion while tragedy plays out, there were other stories that this episode explored. One of which involved Dr. Frost. Who was trying to help a jaded young patient that had been through several wasted surgeries, go through another. And his kind heart and quick thinking allowed for her to finally get some help for her affliction. Not to mention, Dr. Charles finally resolved the whole mess with his former protégé. Granted, it took a battle of wills to get there since a formal complaint was filed against him, but dedication and care for the patient at hand, allowed for the duo to put their differences aside and help one another, and their patient. Which put old grudges to rest, allowing for life to return to some semblance of normal at the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, and it even looked toward some interesting future moments for Dr. Charles, since he and Jackie shared an interesting moment. All of which made, for a solid midseason premiere. One that really did keep us on the edge of our seats. Because rather than rush through Sharon’s waking nightmare and bring that to a fast conclusion, this episode took its time and made sure to resolve it the right way. With just the right amount of drama and it was lovely that Dean was the one to handle this, and that Sharon will pull through. Because she is an important character we adore, and it was equally as amazing that she seemingly talked Dean out of leaving the hospital. Since he is a character, we also adore through and through. But beyond that, it was just nice to see a good cliffhanger back in action and who knows… the popularity of this series might motivate its return since this show… did it right and wowed us with it, every step of the way. Until next time. Watch ‘Chicago Med’
