For the most part, procedurals about first responders that tend to flame out after a certain period of time, do so because they simply don’t offer their audience, enough from a storytelling standpoint. Wherein all they give us is disaster, complication, resolution, rinse, and repeat. And while we do enjoy seeing first responders handle big matters, we as an audience need more. We need characters we can relate to; we need them to be challenged in ways that go beyond the emergency call in front of them. Because then we are getting a complete story, something we are invested in, and that’s why Chicago Fire on NBC has made it thirteen seasons. Because it brings about that depth, and for proof… look no further than this week’s tale. For ‘Too Close’ was a story that really put the characters front and center and had them deal with some real-life challenges. Some great, some annoying, and some were outright devastating. The good ones though, were handled by Severide and Kidd. Who were inching closer and closer to becoming parents in this particular tale. For they were going through final interviews and the final stages of the adoption process and all they had to do was the stay the course and impress, and they had some challenges accompany that. Some of which involved Damon, which we will get to in a minute, and others involved people in the firehouse just rattling off without a filter. Courtesy of Herrmann telling it like it is. But they weathered all storms in this tale and for their efforts… they will be parents. Speaking of Damon, well he had the annoying roster in this tale. Because he was clashing with a real hot shot in his firehouse. One that loved the glory but had zero guts, and that irritated Damon to no end. Because he really wanted to excel here and be the best firefighter possible and that brought forth, an honest talk with his chief and more conflict with this guy. To the point where physical violence threats came forth. One where Severide was present and had to back off for parent reasons, and well, all Damon could do here was stand tall and steady and do his best to be the better man. Speaking of other annoyances, Mouch and Hermann took some heat here as well. Since Chief Pascal was really looking toward the future, both his own and the firehouse, and that prompted him to turn up the heat on Hermann and Mouch. In that, he wanted their plan to change. Wherein Mouch would take a Lieutenant spot at another firehouse and 51 would keep on plugging and make new plans at Chief. Since Pascal really did not think Herrmann had it in him to become the top dog at 51. But Mouch refused and wanted the plan to stick and held steady. But there was mention of devastation taking place in this tale, and that came forth, through Pascal. Because one fine night, like any other, the team got an emergency call regarding an ugly accident. One that revealed that Pascal’s wife, Monica… was badly beaten up in that accident. Which of course, pushed the team at 51 to do anything and everything to save her. But alas, her injuries were too great, and Dom was informed that his wife simply didn’t make it. Which was… a stunning way to end this tale. Because shows like this, tend to steer clear of real-life moments like that, but they shouldn’t. Because the truth is, at any time and in any manner, our loved ones can leave us. Granted, we should never live in fear because of that, but we should cherish them and those moments and remember how precious life can be. Which made for a powerful story about life, and all of its ups and down and emotions aside, this does set the stage for so much more. Because one cannot help but wonder if Pascal can continue with this kind of loss, since his wife meant so much to him, and if perhaps Herrmann will be thrust into position sooner than expected. But only time will tell regarding that, and it will be fascinating to see what lie ahead after this devasting tale. Until next time. Watch ‘Chicago Fire’
