It is definitely safe to say, that television is something that is something that is extremely important to all of us. In part, because it truly is a magnificent escape from our daily lives. For where else can we travel to outer space, or immerse ourselves in a world of laughter for a little while after a long day? But it is also a medium… that offers us great meaning and provides us with stunning insights. Because television can also offer us amazing lessons that we are in need of, courtesy of moments that are reflective of the ups and downs we experience. Which is why Chicago Fire on NBC continues to be such an important series. Because it is that rare television show that finds ways to both entertain and explore life as it is, as was evidenced by this week’s episode. Because ‘A Beast Like This’ took the time to ponder upon how new chapters can in fact, be a little scary at times, and how we get through those early days of uncertainty. Which was explored in part, by way of Jack Damon. Who as it turned out, was shellshocked and terrified of a return to 51, and deeply worried that any screw up might send him home. So, he avoided Novak as much as possible, even after they gave into their passion for a night and worked far harder than expected and even kept his kit ready for departure. All because of that worry that this new chapter would be worse than his last. But Herrmann and Novak guided him through his worries and helped him to embrace his new chapter. In fact, that was really the grand takeaway here. That yes, new chapters will be uncomfortable and awkward, but it is the support network we usually have in life that will guide us through, and that was further hammered home by Chief Pascal’s journey here. For he continued to struggle, understandably, with grief. To the point where he was snapping at people injured on calls and he was distant and rattled otherwise and that prompted Novak, to step in and offer him the same kind advice he offered her. About how folks of their mindset, handle the tough stuff and get through the ugly days, and Novak’s advice did wonders here as well. Since she convinced the chief to push through where he needed to, but also to take the time to reflect and grieve as needed, so that he could properly heal and find peace again. Which he did here in a beautiful manner, by keeping Monica’s memory alive in all the right ways. Yet, since this series always offers more and keeps us engaged with entertainment as well, that was present via some other unique storylines. One that also involved Novak, since she was the hero of the story, since she and Violet solved a crime thanks to connective clues via health scares created by a scummy gym owner. Not to mention, Stella dealt with a unique teenager that was eager to join the Fire Girls for reasons that were heartbreaking. Since she was the one to pull this little girl out of a fire many years ago, and well… that poor girl had little in this life to go off of joy wise and gravitated to the one person that gave her something worthwhile. Which does leave us to wonder what her arrival in the story will mean for Stellaride since there are some hints that maybe, this kid will be related to their adoption hopes. Plus, there were still more intimate moments to be found as Violet worked to navigate her conflicting emotions for her beau and for Carver, whom we learned was heading back to 51, and well… this episode truly reflected how this series captures the majesty of life. Because new chapters happen to us often, and we are always scared of how they will go since they bring forth change. Which we fear, since we are creatures of habit, and we adore comfort. But change is always on its way, and we are constantly learning and evolving and entering new chapters and that’s okay. Because we will get through them with the right people around us, and that made… for a beautiful episode. One that truly spoke to life and offered comfort in a trying time, and it will be interesting to see what other reflections await us as this magnificent season continues along. Until next time.
